My Energy supplier has gone bust.

People pay them for their electricity or gas, maybe they only take a thin margin but they’re still making money out of an essential service.
That’s just it though, they’re making a margin by buying low and selling high. Not actually providing any service as such. The question that needs to be asked is if a power generator (gas or electricity) can sell to xyzmiddleman co at a price that permits xyz to sell to the end consumer for less than the generator could and make a profit, how can that be?

Then you have the Trading floors of banks making markets, spot and forward, in gas and oil which has an affect upon the price the middleman pays.

It’s a bad side effect of a deregulated market.

What do the Greens say about it?

Who F'ecking cares... really....

With regards to the companies going bust they are not actually supplying an essential service. They are merely playing an arbitrage game driven by us as consumers who want something as cheaply as possible and from which they take (or took) a thin margin. It was never a sustainable business model IMO. I got worried all those years when British Gas offered to sell me electricity. "Hang on, you don't generate electricity. Where are you getting it from?".
All points accepted, however without them, the other six would charge 50% more.....

Yep... anyone chasing a quick buck deserves it.... hard work is what makes money.... hard honest work.
OK... now I won't be able to sleep.... Agent Al just agreed with me....

There’s something wrong somewhere for sure.

Too many companies effectively doing nothing and making money from it.

I’ve no idea what the Greens say about it, I like their plans for tax though.

Not with a price cap in place they couldn’t.

For the 25 years or so we lived in London we had London Electricity supplying us, they were te same price per unit and standing charge as my Mum & Dad used to get charged in Birmingham and they used to be the only supplier. Then it all got deregulated, Brit Gas tried to sell me electricity for less the LE and LE then tried to sell me gas, I mean WTF is going on? Obviously they’re paying a wholesale price but WTF do Brit Gas know about supplying electricity? Anyway, I passed on the offer and stuck with LE. We’d left the UK by the time the market went crazy and all these word names companies started playing middleman and the energy futures markets.
There’s something wrong somewhere for sure.👍

Is it a flat rate plan? Coz that’s the only one that’s fair IMO, progressive taxes are counter intuitive, why earn more just so you can pay a higher proportion in tax?

Flat rate tax would put all the accountants out of business 🤣

Please don't get excited about this.
you need a full environmental impact assessment to get permission for one of these.
I've never heard of one being approved for domestic use in the UK.
Friend of mine has a Croft in Scotland and they have a very deep borehole for ground source heating, installed about 15 years ago, very expensive, works well apparently …..

I think Wayne's found a long lost packet of Columbian marching powder.

ZOG have just been in touch....
My current rate ends 22nd December 2021..
Gas standing charge (per day): 17.85p
Gas unit charge (per kWh): 2.7322p

the new best rate is

Gas standing charge (per day): 25.02p
Gas unit charge (per kWh): 4.1685p

All prices include VAT at 5%

So a massive 52.5% rise in my direct heating and cooking costs.
Happy Christmas....

Note
If you want to fix the cost for 12 months.... double that per kW/h rate.
Maybe rent out the big house and move into one of your other properties ?😇

Basically simplify tax, close the loopholes.
You've got to look at the bigger picture, not all situations are that simple. The system benefits from having these nuances.
A fair system would be where everyone pays the same* or a pay as you go system for users.
*This system was introduced back in the 80's for rates, but the same old protagonists didn't want to dip into their own pockets, instead relying on the few to support the many.

Why should some that earn more pay less tax ?
No, each and everyone should pay the exact same amount, say £10k pa to cover general and local taxation.
Remove VAT on all goods below £100k, with a 5% rate above that. Totally remove stamp duty and capital gains tax*
This would remove the tax that discourages people moving homes to move to prosperous areas to find work or away to lower cost homes when an area becomes too expensive to live there anymore,

*Basically a tax on serendipity and good investment sense.... why tax that?

Agree.
As long as everyone pays the exact same amount!
Agreed. So you were a big fan of Maggie's ground breaking Poll tax... every adult pays for local services through the exact same amount for each adult. At present the system is unfair, with those that use locals services* the least, paying the most.

* local bus/tram service, social care, pavements, park benches etc.

That sounds like a plan to make you wealthier. 😜

Why not just for every pound earnt you give a percentage in tax ?
Everyone.

It kind of made sense.

Can’t remember why they stopped it. 🤔

because those that grabbed the most objected.........I thought it was a brilliant idea! everyone pays! rather than me in the middle paying for all the hangers onners and the parasites! If you burden society and have 15 kids you pay for that too!
It's always the ones 'in the middle' doesn't matter who is in government, either the poor benefit or the rich benefit.

Everyone should pay the same % in tax above a tax free threshold. Why should someone who earns more pay a higher percentage? Who has the right to determine at what rates progressive levels kick in? That’s just a step towards communism where someone in charge says ‘right you can all have £xxxxx to live off and the State gets the rest coz I’ve decreed that £xxxxx is all you need.

If there was a flat rate % on ALL income regardless of whether it’s earned paye income, investment income or capital gains or inheritance, it would massively simplify the tax system, save billions in civil service costs within HMRC and be fairer to everyone.

The Govt should also do away with the stupid system whereby the poor get paid benefits gross and then have to pay tax on it it’s crazy, plus civil service DHSS job creating to administer it.

Why don’t we have a much better equal to all system? Because there’s more than enough miserable Marxist/communist/left wing/labour voters around that want to make everyone as equally miserable as they are because that’s ‘fairer’ in their eyes.
