Ducati Monster 750 box o bits

Started on the exhaust today, have decided go for a two into one I had considered two single silencers but the drive side is a little bit restrictive. I will cut the noislecer back to 50mm on the inlet to allow for the two 1 1/2 pipes to merge. This is just a mock of where it will be sited and not the final position I have 4" of carbon the make some sort of baffle may have to put some mesh over the end so it does not sook in wee birds on the overrun!:)

Finished polishing a tank yesterday and was tidying up this morning and thought I would have a go at cleaning up my header pipes, starting to polish up well not bad for an hours work used a scotchbrite belt on a dynafile to get rid of the worst of the tarnish then gave another polish using a scotchbrite cylindrical mop on a PTX polisher (large version of a hand grinder with a long shaft). I wont take it any further until all is welded up.Toying with the idea of making a stubby reverse cone, I think it will look a lot better than the long cone.

That's the electrics, brake and clutch lines now done waiting on the tank to come back from the painters. I don't like the look of the long reverse cone so going to make a couple of stubby reverse cone silencers I will come off the 1 1/2 header up to 2 inch for a link pipe to make up for the reduction in the cone length. The longer cone will do for a two into one for the TT project so nothing going to waste.

Had a go at forming a stubby reverse cone this afternoon, Ithink it looks a lot better than the longer one. I will also go for one either side to even things up after I achieve the header length I will taper to a 2" link pipe to compensate for the reduced cone length.

Aye, the stubby does look better. I think you've made the right decision to put one on each side - the (original) Monster looks better when balanced (although weirdly the new one looks better with shotgun pipes) IMHO.

Picked up my painting this morning after a weeks delay, the day I was supposed to uplift he gave the tank a bake in his spray booth to harden the lacquer and the fecker fell from its stand so had to be repainted.

Feck.

That's me back to the drawing board. Same font and same stripe as I was planning, just different colours :(

......unless I can convince you it looks really terrible and you should try something else :D

It does look good though.

Does that matter? white tank and black stripe looks good as well was going to do that at first with a white frame.

Have been painting my bikes same colours since 1980 first my Tribsa then my Pantah.Maybe it is time for a change!;)

Does that matter?
It shouldn't, but I wanted to create something different. In the last few weeks however, I had started to realise my idea wasn't as different as I'd originally hoped (the tank on Ebay, other pictures on t'internet, etc).

Currently working on "Plan B" - which was already on a back-burner anyway - and, if it all goes to plan, I can guarantee it will definately be "different".

Made wee hangers for the silencers the other day hopefully get some free time next week to connect the open ends together and get around to finishing this bike off and get ready for the next project.
Not sure about the bars either may try clipons or ace bars, my bar end mirrors arrived from China nice anodised alloy ones.

All this in less than 3 months - I'm soooo ashamed :o

It's looking braw right enough - and should sound braw too with those exhausts.

I'll be posting the brackets this weekend - so watch for the postie.

I have achieved more this morning than I have the last two months. Picked up a 90 deg bend two 45's this morning and everything slotted into place nae bother tacked everything into place then purged the pipes and welded up.
Painted with pickling paste, made a brew, then washed down and a rub with scotchbrite finished off with a scotchbrite mop in the polishing machine.Just measured the length and within 25mm of each other happy enough with that.

Decided to take the whole day off today and have some me time and finished off the cans as well (apart from polishing out the welds) cut a piece of 3" perf tube and packed the silencers then welded the reverse cones on.
Thought they felt pretty light (2lb) so weighed the original cans compared to what I have made. A grand total of 12lb between the two cans nae need to go on that diet. Not saying they are going to be a quiet tho! :D

No balance pipe though?

If both pipes are similar length it should be ok.
I didn't get a balance pipe made for my bike and it is fine. (carbs were way out but they may have been anyway if I had made up a balance pipe.)
Gives the engine a completely different exhaust note especially through the reverse cones.
Should sound great!

I have never used balance pipes in the past, will it make any noticeable difference?

I am not an expert but the theory is the balance pipe takes care of any imbalance due to different length pipes and therefore should give you more available power.
I suppose it depends what state of tune you need but would guess ultimate performance isn't the goal.
You said you were very close in length (as was I) and I am happy as it is.

I remember Davie (swona exhausts) saying it was not that crutial and the motor has been left standard apart from a jet kit and open exhaust. :D I spent a week on the exhaust I did for my 1200 Bandit powered buggy that did my head in, managed to get the four headers within think it was 5/10mm

Very similar to what I did with mine Sam and I left the 750 motor standard but put K&N type filter on.
My main jets are now at 200 though! You may find something similar. I put it on the Dyno initially and it was way , way lean on the standard jets.
We thought maybe 150's would be what we needed but that didn't even get close to getting the correct mixture.
I am just a touch rich at the moment and possibly 190/195 may have been perfect but we didn't have access to jets of that size so living with it as is.

I (happily) stand educated. Many thanks Stewart

Sam, just ignore me. I probably don't know what I'm talking about :lol2:

Graeme as I said I am no expert so could be talking b@llocks again!

However if you have a look at likes of Paul Smart '72 Imola bike with high level exhausts it didn't have a balance pipe.
Probably all the bevel racers with high level pipes couldn't/didn't have a balance pipe whereas most bikes now do but maybe that is for emission purposes as much as anything as well?
To get the length on my back cyclinder the pipe had to go off on a magical mystery tour to get close to the length of the front pipe.
Because I wanted the front pipe to come straight over the crankcase for a high level look the only other option would have been a balance pipe underneath the seat and try to avoid the shock. Decided to go for elaborate plumbing to keep the look I wanted.
