Ducati Monster 750 box o bits

From the MOT Tester's Manual -
1.5 Direction Indicators

This inspection applies to: all machines except those which either have no front or rear position lamps or have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are:
. only used during daylight hours, and
. not used at times of seriously reduced visibility

If this situation occurs the machine presenter should be issued with a VT32 (advisory notice) recording the above.

Exemptions
If direction indicators are fitted they must meet the requirements of this inspection, but need not be fitted to a machine which:
. cannot exceed 30mph / 50kph, or
. was first used before 1 August 1986, or
. 'off road' machines which are designed to carry only the rider.
. 'off road' machines with side car designed to carry the rider and one passenger in the side car.

So technically, if a bike is registered after 1st Aug 1986 it must have indicators unless it has no lights at all.

So technically it is an advisory but not a fail?

It does seem to read that way. :)
To me, it reads that the advisory applies to the "daytime" MOT and exemption only covers the 4 criteria taken. It is probably one of these things that is open to interpretation and, unofficially, tester's discretion.

Take the test and see what happens.

On re-reading it I think you are right. Unless the bike is pre- Aug '86 if it has lights, indicators must be fitted. That was the interpretation of a local tester when a friend put his bike in for testing without indicators last year. They got round it by masking all the lights. :D

Back to the drawing board, could not warm to the carbon caps on the exhausts so knocked up another couple of reverse cone megaphones today this time reducing the outlet to 60mm that extra 15mm of wadding made a hell of a difference to the noise level and more happy with the finished look. Will give a polish tomorrow weld on the mounting brackets and spring tags.

Just read this from start to finish, what a great job you have done there. I do agree with you changing the exhaust the carbon ends on the others didn't quite look right IMO.

Cheers! It has tidied the bike up still not sure about the belly pan though but the crank cases are in a hell of a state and was not stripping the motor to clean them up, may do that end of this season depending on how I got on with my other projects.Booked in for an MOT next Friday now to burn up my brownie points.

MOT pass today yipee only problem I ran oot o petrol on the way home, poped down to Lauder on my way to Tranent first thing but the panic buyers were lined all the way out of the garage forecourt I thought it will be ok I have two gallon in the tank anyway. Duh I put the other gallon in the lawnmower which reminds me I had better look at the low fuel level light it didny come on.:)

Good news about the MOT :-)

Not so good about the fuel :-( Hopefully you didn't have to push it too far.

My light has only failed come on once - fortunately half a mile from the house and at the top of the hill - so I can't offer any advice on that one.

Push it nah! phoned my mate a few mile down the road who runs a car garage (I originally come from East Lothian) headed to the sunnyside o the road and lay down in the grass to catch some rays man.:)

Now that I have the bike running reasonably well time to sort out the pish front end, no other words for it 50mm of sag without the rider and no adjustment have made up pre-load spacers 15mm long for the springs now waiting for fork oil to arrive then add or subract to the spacers.

Then time to tackle the rear end.

Managed to get into the garage today (doors swolen shut due to the wet weather the past year) and found a bike under a hap.
Eventually found the key and a piece of petrol pipe inserted the pipe into the tank, surrounded it with a rag, pressurised the tank by blowing into the tube choke on pressed the started and after about 10/15 seconds it burst into life.:)
That was without the use of an optimate over the winter or draining the tank.:D

FCR carbs arrived yesaterday so thought I would try them on the monster for its final blast up north before I clean it and put it up for sale, well if I get a decent price for it if not will cover it in sticky preserve and put it way back into the rear of the garage. Anyway stripped the airbox off and removed the carbs fitted the FCR and tried the airbox bottom on to see how things were going to align up.
I knew about the small mod needing done to the airbox and that the guy I purchased the carbs from had machined up a larger wheel for the throttle cable to run in (giving a better control for road use) but did not realiose he had also modified the cable mounts to accomodate the larger butterfly wheel, this also fouls the airbox and would mean cutting a chunk out of the side so off they come and back on with the std carbs and back into the project box with the FCR's. :o

They do look good though!

Geez 2013 was the last time I had the Monster out,
i made an brew today an IPA and had some time inbetween the mashing and boil so pulled out the monster from the garage to change the front end and shock with 750ss parts I had lying around.(it was fitted with 620 Ducati bits which were 35mm shorter)
As the day progressed I started to get more involved ,still paying attention the the more important brew that was going on.
Fitted the rear shock front end calipers changed the wheels over as well as they had new tires on.
Gave it a wash and polish then took the exhaust off and polished that up as well then refitted.
Turned the ignition on and the lights lit up, pressed the starter and hey presto it turned over.
Looked out the jerry can put some fuel into the tank uncoiled the air line put some pressure into the tank choke on turned the bike over, after about 30 second of occasional jabs on the starter it fired.
Gave it a few more seconds rest and the fecker fired up. I had syphoned the fuel from the tank but didnt drain the carbs, the battery has not seen a charger so thats 2013 untill this very day without a charge.
So in my book that blows out the theory of having to drain your carbs and keep the battery on charge over the winter period.
Feckin surprised me but a productive day.
