Winter Project

I recon he was one of those children who took all his toys apart and ended up with lots of bits after putting them back together!!!! :D :D ;)

Long as it's not Grandad. Quote from '' We were soldiers '' Anybody calls me granpa i'll F....n kill ya. :D

At the risk of looking like a complete plum at this early stage...how in the hell do I get the clock out of the holder? Is that trip thingy supposed to come out somehow...without snapping it off :comp2: :dunno:

"...Na yer see son.......it goes like this...."

...I guess the great God taglioni didn't intend for his followers to take his wonderful creations to pieces!!! ;) :D

Has it not got a little grub type screw inside it? Dunno this one, never butchered a set of Monster clocks before!

On my monster that part has come off and all I can see is a hole with a thread, it is possible that the thread goes in the opposite way to how you reset it, the trick is how do you stop it from turning?!:comp2:

I did manage a run to Pitlochry and back in the morning though (soaked again!). I knew two bikes was the answer...being able to ride AND fettle is just great

I've never taken Monster clocks to bits but on other bikes I've meddled with there is often a small screw in the end of the knob which holds it on to the shaft. It may be hidden by a blanking cap.

Thanks for that mate...it does just screw out after all :fou: :D

Next wee problem :D How does the stearing head and bottom yolk come out of the frame? Is there a special tool that I need?

C - spanner mate. Failing that, brass drift and a hammer or a solid screwdriver.

Ah I C...cheers mate

Well, at the end of day two we're now looking like this! If I hadn't been working my way though a bottle of wine while doing it, I'd probably be sh*tting myself right now. Which means that unfortunately I'm just going to have to keep drinking until this winter project is finished

Feck  i hope you took plenty a' pics takn it apart to put it back together wi' :)

Countless photos! I've bagged and labeled EVERYTHING, and labeled all the ends of the wiring and electrics...still, putting her back together again is going to be interesting :p

thee's a braver man than me dude, i were panicking removing the wiring loom to resolder half dozen wires :D good luck

You know how the generator is supposed to just slide out after taking out the holding bolts...well it's not budging.

I'm really a bit worried about this, as when taking off the cover I was struggling a little, before realising there was one casing bolt left holding the casing to the bike (the little one hiding in the clutch slave cylinder region).

I'm crapping myself that I might have warped the casing a little...I wasn't exactly jumping up and down with force, but where the generator sits is such a tight fit that I'm guessing it wouldn't take much. I've put the casing back on to check, and it looks fine, but like I say I'm guessing it wouldn't take much.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Are you trying to remove the stator from the outer cover?
I doubt if you have warped the cover. I suspect it would crack first if you applied excessive force to it.

Yeh...I need to get it out to send the casings off to be painted. The one on the 750 just slid in and out no problem.

I've managed to get it out only so far, but now it's well and truly stuck...won't come out and now won't go back in either :(

Sounds like it has tilted in it's housing and jammed. Probably best to gently tap it back into place and try again.
If it still won't move you could try heating up the casing with a hot air gun until it's good and hot. The casing, being an aluminium alloy, will expand more than the stator and provide a little more clearance especially if you can keep the stator cool with a damp cloth.

Hokaaaaay! Next dumb ass question :D God you lot have so many of these to look forward to :p

There's a 14T front sprocket on this bike. I have one on the 750, but this time I want to go up in the rear instead...43T, maybe even 45T woo hoo  :D Plus this sprocket is pretty worn and needs replacing anyway.

So...I need to get that front sprocket off. The engine is out of the frame, so how do I stop the sprocket from rotating? Is it able to rotate because it's in neutral? I've tried putting the gear shifter back on an forcing it back into gear, but the sprocket still freely rotates.

As always...thanks in advance

hi mate,

by the looks you've dismantled your clutch therefore you have no way of locking up the sprocket if you are in gear. fit the clutch plates back on, springs and pressure plate, screws then wack in gear.
With plugs in, you should be able to undo the small allen screws that hold the sprocket retainer in position!

Ahhh I see! Yeh, the clutch is out. OK, great...I'll do that bit last then. Thanks mate
