My youngest has just found out the next vessel he'll be posted on for a few months from the end of October (he's doing a marine engineer degree).

Sounds like a great job opportunity. I didn't understand the bit about cofferdams (unless the boat is used to assemble them).
Neither do I...they are to seprate items held in tanks...maybe for offshore refueling of other vessels?
Seems he's going on 24th of this month, not October, so he's going for underwater helicopter escape training.
I hope he enjoys it.
He did 3 months on a similar but smaller (97m) vessel aound northen Europe a few months ago and loved it.
