tboooe's Superlight Mk1 restoration

If you have breakdown coverage, add the bike, fly out there, push it outside the sellers house and then call breakdown recovery. Bike gets home, cheaper than a cheap thing 😁
Now that kind of creative thinking is exactly why I love this group. At least here the breakdown coverage limits the number of miles a vehicle will be towed to, something like 15 or 30 miles. Surely it must be the same there?

Borrow a mate's pick-up for a week and put 5k miles on it

My break down service takes you and your vehicle home, even if your 800 miles away at no extra cost 🤷‍♂️

Ok sorry guys...its been a while. So I picked up Superlight #2 and it is an absolute POS. The seller took pictures at just the right angle and lighting to minimize just how bad of condition the bike is in. He should be an Instagram photographer with those skills. So this weekend I took the first of many steps to restore this bike and dropped the motor for a rebuild. I can honestly say every part of this bike is rusted or corroded. I also figured why it sat for the last 13 years...2 head studs are broken, 1 on each cylinder. So without further adieu behold Superlight #704 in all of its shitty glory!

What did you soak it with
are you going to use a coating?
I used a product called EvapoRust. Its supposed to be water based and non-toxic. It took about 10 hours for it to remove the rust. I have thought about getting the tank coated but decided against it. I live in Southern California where it isnt damp at all. None of my other Ducatis with steel tanks have rust so I think I should be ok leaving the tank alone.

The magnesium hubs are finally fully disassembled, removed from the wheels, and ready to be shipped off to be refurbished. If you look closely at the pic you can see little sections of white color which are the telltale signs of magnesium corrosion. I am amazed at just how light these hubs are! Also, thankfully when I was removing the nuts they were very tight and had a ton of loctite on the threads. The bolts holes are all nice and round without any signs of ovaling. I am eager to see how these turn out and if my restorer can match the color.

So a bit of history. The previous owner binned the bike back in 1997 and decided it was too expensive to fix so this was his solution. Thankfully he had the good sense to keep the 2 piece mag Marvic wheels, top triple, seat unit, and tank. Sourcing the missing bits like side and front fairing, clipons, dash, misc bolts hasnt been too difficult. At this point I am still figuring out what odd bits and bobs I still need to buy. After that I can put the carbs, airbox, and tank back on and maybe fire her up!!!

Happy New Year gang!!! Apologies for the long time away. You know the usual excuses...life, work, kids, health, money, etc, etc. so I wont bore you all with the details. The good news is that I am back restoring this bike with a vengeance, as much as my meager earnings will allow of course. So what has happened since January:
  • Got the bike back from the painter
  • Stripped the bike down to the bare frame
  • Replaced or replated every single nut, bolt, and washer
  • Recoated the Marvic magnesium hubs and restored the wheels
  • Rebuilt the carbs
  • Rebuilt the forks and replaced the progressive springs for Racetech straight rate springs
  • Replaced the fork outer tubes and bush with NOS ones I found in Italy
  • Bought Ohlins rear shock
  • Installed LEDs for the various idiot lights (I can actually see the Neutral light in daylight now!!)
  • Replaced front and rear brake caliper seals
  • Reassembled everything except the wheels
  • New steel braided brake and clutch lines from HEL
  • Fired her up! She actually started on the first try and now idles very nicely
Whats left:
  • Install wheels and tires
  • Chain and sprocket
  • Voltage regulator
  • Stainless steel rotors
But sadly since Xmas just passed I am low on funds again so I think I will be stuck here for a while. I will check back in another year folks. Just kidding. I should be able to road test this baby in about a month
