Saved from the scrappy

Well, it's moved now.

Buggered about a bit today with the old girl, and the 851 too!

Installed a new battery and hooked it up to the optimate, flipped the key and everything lights up - indicators, horn, lights all work. No electrical problems I think.

Except the fuel pump didn't whirr, so, popped the tank up to find the pump was disconnected - hooked it up and twisted the key again. Quickly turn the key back to off when the petrol starts to pish out.

A wee recce reveals that all the tank connections are loose - I think the previous owner has had a half hearted attempt at getting the bike back on the road at some point, and ended up not completing it for whatever reason.

So, tightened the connections up - no leaks, fuel pump primed, everything lights up and good so far.

Popped the clutch cover off, I've never seen clutch plates stuck together before.

Yanked the sprocket cover off, greenpeace would be taking palpitations if they saw in there.

Took the rear cylinder belt cover off, belt looks pretty good.

Opened up the airbox, filter looks nearly new.

Found 2 seized bolts on the hugger, the chain is filthy, sprockets look ok but coated in thick gritty old lube. Every body panel is scratched. One burst front indicator. Tyres aren't worth taking a chance on. And the engine is bio-degrading away thanks to furry corrosion that's been left to ravage it.

All in all, I think she's a bit of a dirty old minging slut that just needs a load of tlc to return her to some sort of former glory.

And if anyone had an old 996 engine lying around that they wanted rid off for buttons, then that would help too! ;)

Temptation.

It's an awfy thing!

Battery fully charged, knew there was some fuel in it.

Ducati's reputation for timing belt issues is very well known to me, especially when the bike has been sitting for maybe 5 years without being started. I know the belts may look ok, but it's no comfort when that old @@@@ey bit of rubber goes ping and wrecks your engine in all kinds of tortured ways.

5 years since it was started, and god knows when they were changed last.

I know this is not a good thing.

But it's just sitting there ....... new battery ........ petrol ......

The archangel Taglioni is smiling upon you my son.
Go forth and push that button!
It is written that no harm shall come to the leader of the SDC whilst in rightful pursuit of the holy grail that is all matters Desmodromic.

Lets be honest that's why you got a new battery and fuel anyway!

sheeesh, was that a SILVER SPOON Scott, the subject on another thread me thinks... happy new bike anyway. That'll be another tattoo then :D:D:D:D:D:D Are you taking it to Almeria ???;)

Holy thread resurrection!

It's finished.

When the Darmah was finished, this was sent to Ducati Glasgow to work on when the winter came.

Just a wee reminder of how things started:

A proper pile of @@@@e. The engine strip down revealed a major fault and total annihilation and a trip to the scrappy was diverted!

This has been a complete rebuild this time, nothing was easy and the bitch fought most of the way.

The team at DG really have excelled themselves this time. Without the help of Tracy, George, Charlie, Kyle and even the wee bawbag Harry this wouldn't have went as easily as it has. I must also add, it's not stung me quite as much as I had expected it too either thanks to Martin's winter labour rates ;)

And here she is today:
