My Energy supplier has gone bust.

Looking at some of the bills on there,
Wouldn’t it be cheaper to buy solar panels and wind turbine generator ?

Martin might be able to help with the latter.

Honestly I don't know what's happened to him. Ever since he got a bit older he's turned into an eternal scared pussy, just like brian may

It's not like Martin will be chucking 3 pairs of socks on. He sold moneysavingexpert for £87 million

🤷‍♂️

I was looking at some of the bills people had posted, scary.

Inflation is already above 9 % here ( and in the USA ) and energy prices are rising at a
MUCH higher rate than that , with literally no upper limit .

It's a market with no elasticity ..... and the price will be whatever the seller says it is
..... and winter is on the way .

The really bad news is that the 99p cheeseburger at McD is now a thing of the past .

But let's not get gloomy ....... look on the bright side .....
..... The Lionesses are doing fantastically well !

But why aren’t they called lions 🦁 like the men

Dunno ..... probably a dick thing
but it's the Lionesses that do all the hard graft ..... hunting for food , raising the young uns etc.
while the lions just loaf around , licking their gonads , and wondering if they can be bothered
to get up and kill their male offspring .
And looking good with their Donald trump manes 🤣

Centrica (British Gas's owner) have announced their first half year figures this morning.

Centrica has reported adjusted operating profits of $1.34bn for the first half of this year, up from £262m in January-June 2021.

AC, you missed an investment there

Err.... no I didn't. 😇 😜
Got quite a few thousand of them, purchased from the early 90's, then again in the 2009 crash and lastly December 2020 .... no dividends for the last few years, but looks like up to 15p a share this year.
A good stock to hold... if purchased at the right time.

I've quite a few BT.A shares before you say I missed out on that as well!!

Looking how the nhs is run, does anyone really think state run services would have made £1.3 billion in the first half of the year? I don't

Reading about the Centrica profits (and I'm sure the oil companies are the same) it reminded me of an article I read the other day. In France, the Energy Minister gave the petrol companies an ultimatum, cut your profits & prices to the consumer or you'll suffer a windfall tax like in other countries. Total, France's biggest refiner/producer decided to cut 20c/litre ie c.10% and made a big thing about how it was better for their customers the benefit went direct to the customer rather than to the French Tax man. All the other cos were forced to follow suit. This was on top of a Govt subsidy for fuel bought in rural locations already.

Now, it seems to me Total must have done their sums and decided it was better to slash 10% off the retail price rather than pay whatever windfall tax the Govt might levy as to do the former would still leave them with more profits than they otherwise would have.

If the French Govt in a roundabout way can deliver significant cost of living benefits to their people why on earth can't the UK and ROI Govts?

No, but people need to have someone to bash
I’m not sure it’s ‘bashing’ them (well, not me anyway). I’ve nothing against shareholders, I just think it’s hard to take when the consumer prices are rising by so much and the companies are making such big profits.

Isn’t the argument that they are essential services so shouldn’t be profit making ?

Spain did virtually the same, forecourts advertise the actual price but punters get 20c off / litre when they buy.

PS. I don't think Total give a toss as the stations are all generally franchised, maybe the gubmint meant slash the cost to the retailer from the refinery

No they wouldn’t but you would have the best most resilient electricity system in the world and not be close to blackouts nor being ripped off by so called green solutions

NHS is state run and that's not working out so well, despite having more funding than ever

Shell in particular, is heavily invested in by many state and private pension funds

With the railways it seems to be more that the unions are saying ‘look at the huge profits, why aren’t staff getting something out of that’
That and the job cuts.
Feck knows where this quote came from 🤷‍♂️

iirc when BG (and perhaps BT) were first privatised wasn't there, due to the essential nature of the services they provided, some sort of structure whereby they had to price their services to the consumer on a cost plus basis, again iirc they were permitted to get no more than an 8% return on equity - I assume that has long since gone out of the window.

That was before the eu companies bought out the uk one’s

I wouldn’t say it’s not working out so well, I doubt I could have afforded private healthcare insurance that would have covered my daughters treatment.

The NHS still saves many lives.

It may well have the most funding it’s ever had but unfortunately it hasn’t grown proportionally to the demand.

I think we’d probably all agree that funding is not the only problem with the NHS, the way it’s managed is a big problem and the ‘too many chiefs not enough Indians’ culture.

Could it be ‘fixed’ by a government ?
Fuck knows. 😬
