As the bike the project is based on never had a chain guard, the chain guard can be whatever you want but carbon is a no no.

I'd see it as you either spray the carbon one black. create or find one in stainless steel or, to go really retro in the look, find a hugger in white which of course has chain guard built in, looks 70's and has a match with parts of the paint job?
He could always put tassels (@Alan Williams there’s your opening) on it, that’d be in keeping with the times.
Actually, I have planning permission now for bricks.
Is your neighbours gas pipe still on your property? It’s good to see you back 👍

Wowza, awesome project! Hell, you inspired me to get off the pervy sidelines and “contribute”, lol.

The chain guard isn’t that hard is it? It’s a 1981(-ish) race bike: there was no carbon fibre, no race team would paint something so minor…so it’s alloy or nothing.
That race team wouldn’t give a shit about polishing anything so it’s a satin/brushed finish.
So do whatever you need to do out of alloy, make it brushed/satin and punch a heap of holes as they would have done back in the day
A privateer team would just punch the holes and be done with it, but a Factory team would go to the trouble of dimpling the holes and it would look right proper:

Originally I was going to make an exact replica and this modern recreation - gave up making two but collected a few period parts so you never know 🤪

I had dimple dies machined up for the frame bracing, but will go with a little artistic licence and paint the carbon one black for now, but may reconsider later :)(y) the original bike didn't have any guard.

Reminds me of Birmingham but shittier.

Nah then, Tommy Topknot, lick my love pump.
Sheffield is the greenest city in the UK and in the top few of Europe; perhaps you should have taken me up on the offer of victuals and a guided passsage through this leafy idyll…

…other than that, glad you got home safe and sound, stop in the area longer next time you’re over.

Been waiting for bits and pieces for a week but a little progress, finalised the shock routing and torqued up all the shock gizmos - just waiting on some 0.2 shim washers and stainless split pins to finally mount.
The correct length 10.9 shock mounting bolts are now with me and have just been cross drilled for the castle nut split pins.

Rear bobbins have been reduced as they stuck out a bit much and looked a bit numb all in black - decided to polish the end face and tapered face.

The R/H one needed some jiggery pokery as the swing arm I decided to chop up had a bit of gravel rash on the bobbin boss - in fact it was ground away on an angle and difficult for a weld repair. I made a tapered spacer to replace the lost aluminium and it worked out well I think.

My Ti flanged nuts arrived for the swing arm bearing shaft...

IMG_0811 (1).webp

The old Kawasaki swing arm bearing shaft from the 80's measured 19.86mm, the Ducati one was 19.92mm. I decided on a precision chrome bearing shaft @ 19.98mm to fit the 20mm bearings & roller bushes, a little over engineered put proper innit 🤷‍♂️

Just had it machined to length and tapped for the Ti Bolts - it was bloody hard stuff but my mate sorted it :)

The worry was it might be a bit tight to get in, so we proof checked it on a spare swing arm and the fit was cock on - in fact it only just went through and when tapping the old Kawasaki shaft out it was immediately obvious it was going to be troublesome to get through as it caught when only 20mm or so in.

So out again and we made a small threaded insert to screw into the new shaft, and ground the first two threads down a little so it tapped into the hole in the end of the old Kawasaki shaft - this held it totally central as we tapped the new bearing shaft in. So I now have my very own 'factory' tool which will definitely be needed if ever adjusting the swing arm pivot mount position to one of it's other 3 settings.

It now tapped through lovely with gentle persuasion!

And drifted to old looser shaft out as it went....

The new shaft was made 0.5mm less width than the frame and fits perfect. All ready to be thread locked & torqued into place when my washers for the flanged bolts arrive in a day or so.

Bobbins look a bit 21st century
too much drift from 1980s tribute
Wait until the posh rear stand hangers go on 👀 they are even more modern, the bobbins are really just for the build but I might leave them so the posh hangers don't get scratched. To be fare you could say that about the forks, brakes, wheels, shock and many other things on the bike - the idea is that it is a modern recreation yet maintaining the overall shape and dimensions of the original.

Exactly, well done that man, it's looking good (y)
