Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, and the 749/999 is a nicer bike to ride than the 916 series - I was suffering arm cramps for a week after riding the 400 miles back from RTL last summer on my 996 :(

If Berto is right on residuals then I may be tempted to buy a nice 749S in yellow over the winter and just ride it and not look at it.

i can see how the 999 will take a hit but i dont see how the 749 will be affected.

I think both the 749 and the 999 will take a hit, but not as much as say the 916-998 as the 1098 is effectively the newer version of them.

Give it a year after all the hype has died down and we've had a year of the 1098, and probably a few issues with the first ones as with most new bikes and I think the 749/999 will stabilize and maybe go up in value from what it was at the start of 2007... simply because it's different and not following the same theme.

In theory the 749 shouldn't be affected but probably will by association. The 999 probably will but, and it's a big but, the residuals have already taken such a hammering from the day the 999/749 bike was launched and I can't see the 1098 making a huge impact on the values. It is sad in a way that the 1098 is announced just at the point where a lot of Ducatisti were just growing to accept the looks of the 999 (myself included).
There is going to be a significant jump in cost to upgrade from a 999 to the 1098 irrespective of the age of 999 that it is likely to be seen as "good value" compared to the new bike and that will cushion the blow. I reckon a lot of folk will "sit on" their 999 until the 1098 starts coming through secondhand and move then to upgrade, or people will move up from 916/996/998 to a 999with a view to eventually picking up a 1098. The fact is most of us won't consider buying anything outside the Ducati range unless we feel there is no alternative.

if the 916/8 etc residuals take a hit i wouldnt mind as it would be a good way to pick one up cheap, same for 999, but i think that some people who have the 916 range may go for the 1098 as its looks could be seen as more of a theme than the 999. i could see 999/749 residuals slipping for that very reason.
i can also see the japanesers getting off theyre jap crap and going for this 1098, as to me its got a very yamaha look and if its as good as the reviews it may just swing it for them, tho the price may bea bit of a sticking point for them.If it does bite into the japanese market, wait to watch cbrs, r1s and gsxrs prices dropping on new bikes and more manufacturers specials coming out to compete like the r1 special of last year. i dont think tho it would affect kawasaki as they have their own special customers, not unlike the ducati.
obviously ducati are looking to increase their market share and this bike with its oriental look could well be the one to do it. ill reserve judgement until i see the bike in the flesh, but to me the new design is really too japanese for me. i hope im wrong ,but somehow dont think so

i am sure there are reasons why people look at your MONSTER rockjock:lol2: :lol2: :lol2: but hey each to there own after all put a good rider on a monster and a crap rider on a 1098 and we all know who wins so it doen't matter what form of bike you ride so leave the 749/999 alone enough said and lets all go back to taking the p*ss out of the rice burners or a poke in the eye from me and all 749/999 owners:mad:
I was only winding you up Steve, chill out man FFS! :)

Got to say Gord, I agree with pretty much all of this, you put the 1098 next to the new R1 and if you squint a bit you would be hard pushed to tell the difference, certainly from head on.... I will reserve judgment... not that the designer will give a pish about my opinion:o :o

if the 1098 is as good as the initial mag articals suggest watch the Japs come back with more techo wizardry, 3 step power switches, fly by wire throttles, tip of the iceberg I fear....

I've gotta tell you guys -

When you see the 1098 in the flesh it looks nowt like a Jap bike, either from infront or behind the fairing. The photos kinda look that way but they just don't do it justice (and it looks beautiful in them already). It actually (surprisingly!) bears a real family resemblance to the Desmosedici in the flesh.

The angles you will see when you see it in the flesh really show off the curves in front of the handlebars.

I also thought the tail was reminiscent of the MV, but again, when you see it, the way the rear unit joins from the lights at the tip to the pad of the seat - it makes total sense and really isn't anything like an MV. (although that wouldn't be the worst bike in the world to be compared to!)

Just wait till you see it in here or Leeds, I bet you will think differently!:)

i am totally chilled and layed back by all this discussion we all buy bikes for so many different reasons but cannot understand why ducati fans are knocking there own breed of bikes everyone else does it to us (reliability, expensive to buy, expensive to run, reliability) i,m sure nobody bought a 999 thinking they could sell it for a profit and lastly i did not buy a ducati in over 20 years of biking because until the 05 999 i didn't like any of them now nuff said

ps any one buying a 1098 got a cheap termi for sale

just reread my last thread and i do not mean to affend anyone on any bike cos according to me any sort of two wheels that anyone rides is ok to me a bikes a bike just get out and ride it no matter what it is

Hear hear Steve!

Im getting a little fed up of the 749/999 bashing, fact is they are better bikes than the older models and all this talk isnt really helping residuals, not that Im bothered because mine is bought and paid for and Ive no intention of selling.

I initially wanted a 748S but Martin talked me into buying the 749 (with a free mug ;) ).....I did prefer the looks of the 748 then, but now I love my 749......it looks so different from the old guard and theres nothing else that looks like it with 2 wheels currrently on the road.

Sensible post from me there.....Im away for a lie down ;)

Ok. I started it and now I'm gonna finish it.
The 1098 is lovely, and depending on the delivery times I could be persuaded, but it is only the next bike in the range. 749/999 kept Ducati going. Things change.
The prices may go to bits, but I'll never sell a bike to a vulture. Go earn more money and pay the going rate.
It is still a crowd stopper. Most of the range are.
The 999 made the FHM list of 100 things to own.

But best of all. And this can NEVER be repeated.

Britney Spears had one in her 'Toxic' video.

Enough said.

In 1999 Ducati sold over 3000 996s in the UK

In 2004 Ducati sold how many 999s?

are you sure on that 1999 figure Henry? AIR few over 600cc bikes get to 3000 units pa. in 96 Ducati's total annual production was 12000 units, 99 was about 19000 a lot of which were monster and its now around 40000 ( i'm sure Nige can give us an exact number)

i'd expect them to sell less SBK anyway, in 99 there wasn't a lot of competition but the R1, GXR1000 and CBR1000RR have changed the mass market and MV, Benelli hit into the high end exclusive segment, they are in a niche which is getting squeezed from both ends......

theres no way im letting you stop it there fergie.
to me the 999 is and will still be an utterly desirable machine, just like the 916 range are/is (dont know the grammar) both for totally different reasons. im hopeing like martin says that the 1098 looks a lot better in the flesh cause ive still to be convinced, but i will keep an open mind until i see it.
i even liked the paso when it came out and i wasnt even into bikes then, i just thought it was incredibly futuristic and looked good. hopefully this new one will have a similar effect on me. then its just a simple case of bumping of a loved one, or even the wife for the insurance money and ill be having mine in red;) :D

I remember waiting with excitement to see the 999,after the 916,the whole world expected perfection, sadly MV took those honours.
Up close the 999 is still a looker.I think Ducati possibly panicked after the MV came out?
Am i rigt in sayin the 916 designer did the MV?

Anyways, even the new Ducati wont match the 916,it is an icon and they only come around once every blue moon, or yellow,or maybe green?!

Yep, you're right mate, Tamburini designed em both.

I also agree with you're statements regarding the 916 being an icon - too true! When you think of what was about at the time, it was a bold & significant step forward. One that arguably the other manufacturers followed and worked off of.

I dunno if Ducati panicked with the 999 though, they decided to head in an entirely different direction with the and it didn't pay off as they thought albeit the bike was and still is (in my honest opinion) a far superior bike to ride and live with.

The latest guise of the 999 is beautiful, no doubt and the finish is superb! If it turns out that there are some slightly cheaper 999s around next year then there are going to be a load of happy used bike owners!:)

Well.
If mine goes tits as a result of the factory and their displeasing comments then it will probably be the last one I own.

Depreciation I can handle. Kamikaze marketing I can't.

No. What is truly amazing is how quick they have sold out the 749/999 range.

And when I say sold out, I mean sold out!
