Insulate Britain

Next time I have to go to London, I think I will put one of these in the boot.

Its a complete XR or IB removal kit.

Whack em if they are standing, shovel blade under their hands if they are 'glued' to the road, bury em in the side to stop em rolling back into the road...problem solved

I've been thinking about this while working on site and I think these should be issued to drivers 👀

Aww bless - wankers 🤷‍♂️
They do realise the Government has changed building regs several times over the last 40 years and are now very robust in terms of insulation design 👀
And have had many grants over the years for free cavity wall and loft insulation, including a recent scheme which included 50% cost of double glazing...

But... But... But... What if your property doesn't have cavity walls, as it was built in 1700?

Are you aware of the regulations on ceiling coverings?

I'm not an expert but I can see UK having bigger issues insulating and changing heating infrastructure etc,
Back home i am luck to be able to live in a full detached house with a cellar = lots of room for cladding, air to air, Ground pumps, solar etc, but reflecting on how my home in UK was built with mainly semi or Terraced properties, you are limited with the footprint and size of housing of where to fit all this eco saving stuff.
my father has his heating in the garage, taking up quite a lot of floor and wall space, and if he was to change over to underfloor heating, as needed really with air to Air or ground heat source pumps who is going to pay for this, and the obvious re-modelling of the home that will be required?
I looked at it and quickly realised that unless there is no financial benefit other than the 'good feeling' so i will stick to what i have.. Oil central heating and wood burner..

You are absolutely correct.... except...

The easiest and cheapest way for a Greene Eco-terrorist to feel good is to fit a hi-COP (more expensive, more efficient) air to air heat pimp.... aka air conditioning.
Obviously as an Eco-terrorist you'd never dream of running it in cooling, but in heat mode you'll get *5x more heat out than you pay in electric... compared to direct electric heating....... that's a real 500% gain, 400% EXTRA for no more money (Larry are you listening).
This is true for at least +10 months of the year.
*The lower the outdoor temperature the lower the efficiency, but even at -10°C you are still getting 250% heat compared to direct electric heating.
Install cost to the average 3 bed semi, £8-10K inc VAT..... with some profit to feed AirCon's habits.

Over in EU land ( Germany) I'm looking at 25k to carry out the simplest of system changes ( oil out and Electrical in) minimum..
all assistance packages are focused around giving interest free/ very low, loans to finance the improvement etc, but ultimately the burden stays with the home owner..
I'm not 100% familiar with the hi-Cop system, but as long as the building isn't built with Passive house requirements then I would think your chasing your tail regarding meeting any established Kv targets.

over the last 10 years+ in Germany ( i can only speak from my experience with friends feedback) lots of houses where covered in Styrofoam type cladding, inside and out depending on size location etc, and serious issues have arisen with mould and damp, due to the house air circulation being reduced and also made worse with current triple glazing etc.
to properly uprate my homes heat rating index, I would have to carry out a full renovation, starting in the cellar and ending with the roof.. already the German government has banned the use of certain wood burners/ combi fires... just pricing up a new wood burner for my home and ill be looking at anything from 3-6k for the unit.. and that's without a water jacket..

my thought's are its a scam to break the dependency on Oil and Gas from Russia and other countries whose GDP is wholly fixed to the Petro dollar /local equivalent.. but what do I know .. :)

Sounds good apart from hanging AirCon ducts in every room, Mrs Hell wouldn't like it, but happy to hear more 👍

You have a completely different climate model and insulations standards for Germany.

Basically keeping your home warm and allowing it to breath water vapor keeps it free from condensation, mould and damp.
Next door has a very similar construction, however he's a tight git and last year his total heating bill was £264, ours is over 20x more.
Loads of issues with condensation, mould and damp. Tenants are always moaning, but he is always generous at temple.
I'm looking at insulating the outside of my house, but with positive forced air ventilation to help remove water vapour from within the home.
Looking to cut my heating bill in half for around £20K investment, so pay back 10 years, or 5 based on the current gas prices.

Insulation and Moisture control go hand in hand.

Wall mounts are the cheapest, if the loft is clear you can fit ductwork for heating/cooling. Looks neater in the room, but typically you've the same temperature everywhere upstairs... that may not suit some of the women in our lives at the moment?

Insulation is a really good thing. It’s amazing the reduction in heating costs if you insulate well.

InsulateBritain is a stupid short sighted movement that is causing more resentment than results. As AirCon said what they are doing is not the way to do it. They are a bunch of self righteous idiots that have no idea about the art of persuasion, or how to go about trying to impose their will on the populous. Perhaps it’s just as well.

This thread is a perfect demonstration of that fact.

As I understand it there is more pollution coming from homes in the Uk than road traffic! So here we are getting whacked on all sides. I don’t know what boiler to install or what car to buy. At the moment I can’t afford my preferred solution for either, so why should I?

From tomorrow I have to pay a £12.50 levy every time I start my car up! What about the pollution caused by crushing my perfectly good car and manufacturing a new one? Surely phasing out would have been better.

The view about pollution and global warming needs to be kept in proportion. The pollution this country puts out is minuscule compared to China, and President Xi has just ordered a massive increase in coal production. We are pissing in the polluted wind. What we do here will effectively have no influence on global warming what so ever.

Done right, it could help influence countries around the world though.

I do feel there’s a good deal of ‘King Canute’ about this whole thing. My brother in law who has just retired as a Cambridge archaeology professor tells me the planet has been warming up for the last 4 million years.
However pollution reduction can only be a good thing.

Believe me I’m no green warrior, these self righteous short sighted idiots deserve running over. They’ve succeeded in achieving exactly the opposite of their aim by alienating the populace.

Think of the pollution that’s caused by all the tail backs!

I'm currently sat in China, and what is presented on the news, is not what I am seeing out the hotel window, to some degree..
in the current location ( Xiaoyi, Shanxi province) there is a huge drive to modernise and switch off all the older or emission creating Coal works, so much so that the project I am involved in is a 200 Million euro privately owned Green field construction of a Germany designed Coke plant, and the older plant has already been switched off, much to the owners disgust..
last week we had 3 days of zero activity as there was an environmental state visit, and as the localised emissions measurement was too high, the plant and others locally were put on idle / switched off, and this happens quite regularly as they drive to lower their Co/ NOx etc output.
just to add some personal observations, there are no petrol scooters in the city only EV, more than half of all the Taxis I use are EV and I haven't seen a HGV that isn't LPG converted yet.. so they are way ahead of us in some aspects, but behind on others..

The food there is terrible...

For your place Sam, a new gas boiler with a matched low loss header.
Keep the Gas boiler at 55°C flow temp and a variable flow pump to the radiators.
Air to Air aircon in the used bedrooms and any cold or hot rooms Inc garden offices.
Run the heat pumps Summer, Autumn and spring.
Gas heating in the winter.....
Gas all year around for hot water.
All IMHO.

Fact: Carbon Dioxide isn't pollution.
It has existed in our atmosphere from the formation of the planet.
It doesn't directly hurt any animals and is really good for plants.

0.04% is Carbon dioxide. ... breath in and then out... now it's 4%....
People are the problem?... especially those Green voters.

Trees and green plant life generate millions of tons of Oxygen each day.
It's just math.... generate just 1% more oxygen and the ratio of CO2 will drop.... Simples...

Carbon capture. .... plant more trees...

Plastic rubbish is pollution.
Taxing London drivers any more is just wrong..... Feck off Khan... you Guinness!

Prove me wrong.....
