AI & the Future ............. What on Earth does it Hold for us All ?!!

Im in IT....i totally agree. Which way does the broom go?
Im sure their are plenty of handsy lads in IT but it certainly won't be the majority.. in the same way I don't even own a PC.. I've never had a remote interest in computers and as a result id be near impossible to teach because I couldn't care less about anything more than sending an email 😆

Has anyone asked AI "where is the intelligence in building massive, power consuming data centres which require huge quantities of water......

Like all these crazy ideas the bubble will burst and a lot lot of investors will lose out.

The intelligence is in recognizing that these facilities are the physical backbone of the digital economy and the current AI boom—not optional luxuries. Without large-scale, high-density data centers, the services people actually use and demand (search, cloud storage, streaming, real-time AI models, financial systems, logistics, scientific computing, etc.) either don’t exist or become far more expensive and less capable.

What the numbers actually show

• Power: Data-center electricity demand is rising sharply because AI training and inference are compute-hungry. Hyperscale facilities are being built because that is the efficient way to deliver the required FLOPs at scale. Distributing the same compute across millions of smaller machines would usually waste more energy on overhead, networking, and under-utilization.

• Water: Many centers still use evaporative cooling because it is thermodynamically efficient (lower energy use than pure air conditioning in most climates). A large facility can use hundreds of thousands to over a million gallons per day. U.S. data centers used roughly 17 billion gallons directly in 2023; projections show significant growth. Indirect water use at power plants is often larger still.

That consumption is real and locally painful in water-stressed areas. It is also smaller than many people assume when put in context: agriculture, power generation, and even some recreational uses (golf courses, landscaping) dwarf it nationally. The industry knows this and is moving—closed-loop systems, direct-to-chip liquid cooling, immersion cooling, free-air cooling in cooler climates, higher operating temperatures, and recycled/non-potable water. Microsoft, Google, Amazon and others have already cut water intensity dramatically (Microsoft’s WUE dropped ~90% over two decades to ~0.27 L/kWh by 2025) and are targeting further reductions and water-positive operations.

There. Leave me alone. 😬

100% . Over here people are getting tiny homes imported from china. I recently lost a job i was to do for a mate as he believes it more cost effective to imprort a building than me make it. It will almost certainly bite him on the arse but he will be broke and ive lost work.
My comment on another thread about robot lawn mowers was kinda serious.
Its far from just a few gardners feeling the pinch, one of many examples, outfits are using drones to spray paint roofs. That affects not just painters but the scalfolders and companies that hire out access equipment. When 10, 15, 20? % of IT workers in the cbd are unemployed, that means whatever % lunch bars are not needed, x % of cleaners, x% of office space no longer needed. Some of these things may sound like positives but they aint. Tradesman not making money means fewer van and tool sales etc and so on ( yoall are probably well aware how it works)!
Unfortunately most people seem oblivious to what is on the horizon. AI is a bigger threat than any made up pandemic...
The Industrial Revolution springs to mind.

All those people put out of work by the invention of the mechanised loom. It will never catch on, the country and world are doomed.

Doomed, you say?

Good. I thought the country and the World were going to continue but be overrun by inbred zombie mohammedans so I am somewhat reassured now. Many thanks.

"Doom" comes from old Saxon English and means a ruling or judgement - hence doomsday and the doomsday book which was an official legally binding inventory of who owned what in England.

Over time the context of that sense of judgement shifted from implying the purely legal to the existential, and so your doom became your fate or day of reckoning. It might be good, it might be bad, but to be doomed, or to face your doom, means to be finally called to account. On that basis the world needs more people, especially the leaders and manipulators of its peoples, to be brought face to face with their "doom".

There are similarities of course but i dont see anyone saying it will never catch on, it is and all too rapidly. I also dont see AI creating the scope of associated jobs as mechanization did.i have said my bit and thats all i have to say on the subject.
( its not, i will still be chipping in with pearls of wisdom, ya cant get rid of me that easy )

You're doomed and so's ya...

Damn it.

You know what the worst thing about getting older is? No one ever mentions it but it's the absolute worst - there is no more "...and so is yer mum" missiles. It just doesn't work at this age.

I miss being young so much.

I wonder, If bit coin had not been invented, would data centres have been invented?
Id say it was inevitable with the big push for AI. AI in itself could be great if used soley for good buz that will absolutely never happen.
The centers themselves in there current format are a disaster . There is one that has been approved for construction in Invercargill ( snuck in without anyone but the land owners and immediate neighbors being consulted and rubber stamped by the powers that be
The 49 Hector site will apparently create 1200 short term jobs in its construction and 50 full time jobs onsite there after.
A whopping 50 and id bet any money those jobs will be filled by overseas "experts".
Im sure there will be associated jobs created in building maintenance.
This site alone will use 6% of the entire countries current electricity output
(Price hike anyone? ) and some insane amount of water which i forget and cant be arsed looking up..
Ya can bet ya arse that any profit made by this venture will be going straight offshore with fuck all tax being paid here. The government will only be allowing these centers as a short term windfall to patch holes in their grossly mismanaged budjet and we will live with the damage for ever.
The center will be a massive cash cow for whoever ultimately owns it and nothing but a burden on NZ.
What fucken waste of land and resources.

Im beside 11 acres of data centre and the same here 50 jobs total . my 5000 square feet provides 10 jobs 🤔

I was just looking at one of these...NAS

When I saw this in the description.

"AI-powered image recognition
With a built-in NPU (Neural network Processing Unit) processor, the TS-433 boosts performance for high-speed face and object recognition."

So, is it going to scan all your photo's then upload them to???
