1098?

i don't think the 999 is dated yet but it did need to be evolved, Ducati made the mistake of keeping the 916 shape way too long and this version should have been a development of the current 999.

The biggest concern i have is that they are now heading into Japanese bike territory, short stroke 12K red line bikes ain't what i want if i do i'll buy an il4 like an MV!! it might hit the numbers to compete with an R1/K7 but is it going to be any different to them? Given the pricing its still an expensive bike and the riders who want numbers will also look at price so it needs to have something different.

arj, i agree on the multi's looks but what other all purpose bike has as much style? TDM? Tiger, Varadero? GS? they are all ugly but usable bikes the multi at least looks different and the features it has do set it apart.

I think it looks remarkably like an RSV Factory with the fairing off a Firebolt.Still not a patch on the 748/998 range oh and the s/arm looks like a fat Trumpet one

Methinks the lady doth protest too much and of course you don't want to evolve the most successful Ducati sports bike ever (748/998) I mean look at the arse of things Porche made of the 911
:comp2:

Whenever ANY new bike (or car even) is announced the aftermarket is instantly swamped with "go faster" bits for it - to set yours apart from anyone else's of course. We all buy the stuff to "improve" our standard bikes and don't kid yourselves we don't - carbony bits, tinted screens, new mirrors, 15tooth sprockets, anodised bits, different tyres, crash bungs, heated grips, and a score of other stuff. It's what we like doing. There is not a standard bike on this forum, I'll bet. We do it to convince ourselves we can make the job better than the factory can.

It would be possible to make an adaptable and truly ergonomic design and a GOOD designer team would be able to make it look like current accepted design. I have taught students who could manage that task quite easily, but we all know there are other factors in the equation. It all depends on political will I reckon. Or cost. Or fear. Or all three. As Fergie says we will buy it in droves and it may even tempt some "oriental" buyers if the numbers "do" the gixxer throttle jockeys. That can only be good for the proper numbers - Ducati profit! Which will give them more time and money to bring along the subsequent bike, which might be revolution, rather than evolution. The 1098 will get rid of the quirky, hard to accept, possibly ugly style of the 749/999 series, which let's face it, still hasn't gone down universally well, not like the 748/996 etc did.

I don't think the 1098 should be knocked, it should be welcomed for what it is, and the job it has to do. Ultimately we will all benefit, except existing 999 owners :) possibly! But I doubt it. Used good ones will still sell well. To the people who couldn't afford them first time round.

I used to have a porche. It was a lovely brick built affair.
Then I bought a Porsche. It was a far better bet for the roads. the porche used to buck and rumble and the 0-60 time was awful. The Porsche went a lot better and the roof comes off in nice weather. Something that my porche could only dream of!
Porsche did not make an arse of the 911. It is the most evolved sports car on the planet and anyone that owns/has owned one will tell you that.

NB-for porche read porch.

As for the rest of the debate of pipe length, EXUP, EX-doon, mirrors, blah, blah, blah.......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz:rolleyes:

I,m still gonna buy one.

There's a lot of comments about how the 916, 999, 1098 look but how they ride is also important. Sure the latest bikes might look very Jap or whatever But do the Jappy bikes ride the same as a Ducati?
Which Jap manufacturer does a big V-twin superbike engine and even if they do from my experience the engine has similar charateristics to an IL 4, ya need a good few revs on to get the thing to go.

Sure Ducati's need to look good but the oily bits side is very important as well.

When I get on a Ducati I expect it to try and pull me arms off from standstill and not require a riverdance on the gear lever. I expect the 1098 is gonna have more torque than the old bikes, I've seen 90lb/ft quoted.

I've often read that the 999 rides better than the older bikes, that's probably true. Maybe it was a mistake to put the testastretta engine in the 998, if it was only available in the 999 shape not only would the looks be different but the oily bits would have been a significant evolution as well.

Forget the looks, if ya want a Superbike with a big V twin Desmo engine you have just one choice.

Is that the unique thing about Ducati?

Ray.

This of cause only my opinion, but I reckon we saw the successor to the 916 in the MV Agusta F4.
Massimo Tamburini went with the Castiglioni lot & Cagiva and the first thing they did was launch the F4. It to me looked like a natural evolution to the 916, with such distinct family resemblance, simularities yet updated. (forgetting it's powerplant of cause)
My question is where would Ducati be with their bikes if that split hadn't happened and it was still Ducati/Cagiva group. I wonder what the successor to the F4 will look like?

I gotta agree with Fergi, don't bring Porsche into this, I may not like the water-cooled overings of today, but it is truly the most successfully evolved motorcar ever produced.

i think your right about the f4. sh1t i agreed with ed, think ill go have a wee lie down

feck why do I bother....Go and look up sarcasm/humour I don't know why i bother i really don't!

You're probably right about the F4, Massimo Tamburini moved to Cagiva and still has shares there but there are a couple of fundamental things differing to the Ducati that can never be overlooked.

Firstly the engine - a true masterpiece, in a style that only Ducati build. It's the heart of the bike and a huge part of the character we are all used to. The desmodromic type timing is a remarkable piece of engineering that has come on an awfully long way since its creation.

The MV is an inline four like the rest, rides like the jap equivalent and sounds like em! I'm not slagging them - we sell them too. The engine really is superb, at least a match for the current inline four stuff, but still not a twin.

Some people prefer the way a 4 rides, it's just I prefer the twin for my type of riding.

The chassis - Ducati are the only ones building the steel trellis frame such as it is. The handling that it gives is legendary, we all know how successful it's been over the years. We all feel it every time we go out on our bikes.

At the end of the day, riding bikes is what it is all about, not just looking at them!
However, opening up the garage door and seeing something that you essentially have a love affair with - is a huge part of the equation.

To me, the styling on the machine is feckin beautiful, our phones have been ringin off the hook about these bikes since yesterday.

On top of that, the 1098 shares a very similar chassis to the 999 with loads more power, torque and 15+kgs less weight overall. I mean that's awesome!
Squeezing that type of power out of a 1100 twin is a real feat of engineering!!

Whatever you think of the (totally beautiful, gorgeous, how can you think otherwise??!?!?!?) looks - the 1098 is going to be simply stunning to ride!:)

Martin, I know what you mean, forget the inline 4, imagine the F4 with the Desmoquattro or Testatretta in it - wow!!!

Martin;

with you at the helm & the lovely Kerrie on hand - you WILL sell loads of them. And bl*ody good on yer mate (I want a test ride on one round Knockers when you bring one along to your trackeves):)

And at the risk of sounding like a Tory cabinet minister of the '80s, I am slowly starting to change my opinion of and see closer into the aesthetics of this latest creation from Italy.

....me - Mr critical!!! :) :p

Very nice! I'll hound you on that front!!!

A few photoshop jobs from the other site!

Just stunning!

Are these CG images? what's the different specs, I see Ohlins, I see Termigs, etc

ignore that, of cause they are, I see from the background and the incredibly cause Carbon fibre that they are! - no matter! :)

One thing that noones talked about is the sound this thing is gonna make.

The 749 & 999 models sounded distinctly different to the 916 models. With the exhaust set up that the 1098 has, it may revert back to that sound that was so very 916.
You 'eard one yet Mart?

...still nothing for me beats the sound of a 888 or 926 racer for sound, they had shorter systems which may have contributed to that amazing bark!

Hmmm, I really love the sound of me 749R but the old bikes sound grrreeeat too! Either sound - or a combination of both would be just what the doctor ordered!

naaah,

changed my mind - there's nothing like the sound of open Contis from the back coupled with the ear drum bursting induction bark of a modern Ducati from the front - aka ProjectImola!!! :p :)

can't...

...wait!!....just working out finances now, ......need to do this and still keep 998s.........I'll be back!

Good Grief!
Just what I said all along......we will all buy one. Hands up who is getting excited???

I hate it when I'm right.

no not me, I'm poor

The Imola cost me to build what these are gonna cost you to buy !!!!!!

Mind you, I reckon it will hold it's value longer than the 1098!

I was speaking generally.

Please put a penny in the old mans hat.
If you haven't got a penny the a ha'penny will do.
If you haven't got a ha'penny then God bless you.

Like I say..........

Jesus rides a Yamaha, but God rides a Ducati.

im afraid im still not convinced.though its pretty academic to me cause im skint and will be for the forseeable.im still not sure.Front end still looks like an r1 from straight on it looks like it will still have the one headlight on one off thing that i hate.the tank looks like the new r6 tank and of course the tail is of an mv f4.Saying that it does look good from the side and im sure its more bike than i could ever handle but i prefer the 999 it replaces.but then again i always liked that from the start and you can see how that was received
