1098 into 916 engine swap

It's a mess, I am really sorry after all the hard work you have put in.

There must be a reason - although I see it doesn't help you now.

Flog the un-shagged engine parts separately to get the best return and await an eBay replacement?

I wish you good luck, what a mess :(.

It happens unfortunately part of building non standard stuff, ill look into the exact cause at some point but im mainly happy it happened on a dyno and not out on the road as the results would be alot worse than the £900 i paid for the engine.

Yes ill be sourcing a low mileage replacement at some point.

Looks like the valves started hitting the piston, which broke the valve stem & broke the con rod which...

(There is a very good chance I have misread the pickies :scratchhead:)

Surely a rev limiter would have stopped this? Is their a limiter on the 1098?

time to dust this one off again. at the end of september i managed to find a low mileage engine with full dealer history but due to house renovations and other stuff it's just been left in a corner.

this weekend i got it out and swapped out the few 1098 bits that need replacing with 916 stuff.

i also stripped down the rear swingarm and suspension, everything was cleaned with a mixture of paraffin and baby wipes, i replaced the swingarm bearings everything else was greased/checked as required. i also fitted new rear brake pads as one had delaminated from the metal backing.

and lastly i finally stripped and refreshed my rear showa shock including fitting a more appropriate spring for my weight, tomorrow ill take it to have the nitrogen recharged

it's booked in at cornerspeed for mapping on the 18th, hopefully the engine will be bolted in tomorrow then ive the rest of the week to plumb it up and reconnect everything should be doable

Did the oil stink of fuel? the overfuelling can cause bore wash and then you get fuel getting into the oil, and then you start spinning big ends.

No there was nothing obviously unusual, since i posted the pictures last year a few have said it's happened to them even on bikes with full service history

spent the last few days fitting the new engine back into the frame,

dropped it off at cornerspeed this morning for nelly to tune it, hung around for a few hours whilst he looked it all over and did the first few warm up runs, first runs were showing 144bhp at the wheel which neil reckons is on the money for a healthy stock 1098 engine now just have to endure the wait until he's finished with it and then i can bring it home and take it apart again

when it's home i plan to refit the kawasaki stick coils ive got, ive bought some solid state relays to fit so im going to rewire the bike to do away with the stock relays down by the battery and those under the seat, ill mount these in a box in the tail along with my alarm unit.

i also need to remove the tank, fit a new fuel filter and go over the fuel circuit then lastly rebuild the front forks and reset all the suspension hopefully ill have it all squared away for may and be able to enjoy a hassle free summer of abusing her again :D

Time for an update, firstly a picture of my dyno chart from cornerspeed

I'd decided awhile ago to relocate my alarm to under the seat and to change the ecu, fuel pump and ignition relays for solid state relays, quite a straight forward job just time consuming

Whilst moving those relays I also decided to move the indicator relay next to the regulator/rectifier this now means I've clear access to the oil filler and it looks tidier in my opinion

I've also relocated my crankcase breather filter to under the seat to keep it out of the elements, and lastly I've reworked the piping for my coolant system as the bike was getting warm during extended dyno runs.

Just the suspension to setup later this week and an mot and she'll be good to go

Hi I fitted SSR'S to my ST4 last winter and they all work ok.The ignition relay led was still on when the ignition was turned off and I had to put a resistor across the feed terminals to put it out otherwise would have drained the battery over time.

Interesting,I haven't noticed mine staying on I'll have to check. What resistor did you use and did you just link it between both terminals on the input side?

853RS my relays switch off fully with the key albeit there's a slight delay between switching off the key and it stopping which I guess is the relay powering down.

Spent the weekend putting new oil in the front forks and setting up the suspension, today I took a scenic 50 mile trip to get mot'd, passed with just an advisory on the front tyre as it's right on the limit, I've a new one ready to fit just waiting on some tyre soap arriving.

The bike rides superbly I couldn't be happier with the outcome even if it took awhile getting there.

I've a few things to fiddle with still I've a 96 link chain on order as the current one is too short, currently with the tension set the eccentric is at around 8 o clock which whilst in the bottom half of the section it ideally still wants to be closer to the rear.

I've a set of 13 black dzus fasteners on the way, I need a few more than stock as I've used them to attach the v fairing piece and needed one extra underneath as the rear of my fairing doesn't close up fully due to the 1098 downpipes so I've used a strip of metal with a dsuz fastener in each end to hold that part.

I also need to order some exhaust wrap and heat reflective mat as the downpipe is quite close to the fairing and I don't want it melting or blistering the paint.

But none of those things stop me getting out and using it now :D
