International Fishing

I've caught precisely one L/M bass in my life. It wasn't very large but I was used to English coarse fishing so it was a bit of a shock.

The presence of water moccasins in the lake was another shock.
 
We are blessed in the North East USA with only 1 venomous snake species that really lives up here, the rattlesnake. There are a few others but very rare to see. I have been hunting and fishing theses woods all my life and have only ever seen 1 rattler in the wild and that was over 35 years ago. Lightning is a much bigger worry than snakes here and the fishing is pretty good!

this is a common water snake that lives up here in the North East. They eat only fish and no poison but many people think they are water mocassins and kill them
 
I was bitten by a snake when I was a child.

Fortunately, it was a garter snake. One which I had been annoying so I can't feel hard done by.

My Dad fished on Lake Michigan one time. A small boat, with a 5' spinning rod and close-faced fixed spool reel (Shakespeare, IIRC). He hooked a muskie that was longer than his arm and way, way too large to pull into the boat so he cut the line as close to the hook as he dared.

I used to use that some rod. It could be bent into a hoop with no difficulty at all, it was really "whippy", so bendy that I struggled to land a 3lb tench with it. The idea of 20-30lbs of muskie on the other end of it staggers my mind.

Next time you are in the US, let me know, I cant take you musky fishing but certainly can find you some fish to catch. I have dozens of fish poles from "whippy" like you describe called slow action to very stiff which they call Fast action. I invite any of the forum member who find themselves in the area of southern new england to come fish with me.

Found a new lake near my house, it has a lot of potential. Looks like canoe or kayak access only but there is so much cover. I saw one of these salamanders swimming around when I arrived and several dead ones over by the dam. We guess that some died over winter and current deposited them near the dam. Well more updates to come as the weather has been warming some and my shoulder is progressing. I may get to fish the first 2 weeks, after they stock all the waters with trout, before I have to return to work.

unfortunately the weather has continued to be cold here with lots of wind. My shoulder has healed enough for me to do some fishing, just an hour or so at a time, but due to the weather, so far, no fish this year. As soon as the weather improves I will be posting more pictures and stories.
 
Finally caught my first fish of 2025! Not much butthe weather has been nothing but cold, rain and snow. Been out 9 times this year so far with nothhing to shiw soI am calling this a victory for now. The little guy was literally freezing cold to touch as the water is just slightly above freezing. More to come I promise, this is only the beginning

The water has warmed up in the last couple of weeks over here and the fish have started feeding. They will start to spawn soon.
