What To Do?

I am just looking at GIVI now, but I don't want to buy a bike only to find that I can't get a case for it.

Mind you, although my mate has a big case on his BMW that can take two helmets. it does look shit!

With GIVI, one candidate I found is the Triumph Trident 660. That on my list before I decided on a Monster.

I fink that I may put this idea to the side, as a top Case does look shit!

I thought that would press me to a Multi, but GIVI don't do a case for it - only panniers.
I have a Multi with a Givi topbox. Their boxes fit any bike that you can a rack to and that covers nearly every bike.

The Triumph Trident 660 seems to fit the bill if I want a GIVI Top Case - which I am not sure that I do!

It's very affordable with all the toys that I want

Weight is quoted at 189 Kg. Rather than to to Riders next week, I might go to Fowlers to have a closer look.

I think that it looks good enough as standard. I am tempted to go this route anyway. Get it as is and then think about ruining it with a top case!

And Fowlers do good food!

God is guiding me, I think! Fowlers have one in stock that is really new but is thousand less than I was thinking of spending!

I was supposed to post shit about choosing the Triumph Trident 660 and then I come here and see that I've already done it!

I don't like the RWU forks on the Yammy Tracer 7 as I reckon that it looks a bit old faahioned.

If I don't care about luggage, then the Ducati Monster wins and if I do, the Triumph wins.

But a fecking large top case is something that I am unsure about.

And I have my Duke with panniers for touring.

I just dunno!!!!

@PerryL re your opening post if you’re considering taking your bike to Spain look at the cost of Fishguard/Pembroke to Rosslare (Ireland) with Irish Ferries or Stena Line then Rosslare to Bilbao or Santander (can’t remember which). I’ve seen a lot of posts recently on an FB site (UK Bikers Touring Europe or something like that) where, s they plan next years trip their finding it considerably cheaper to go via Rosslare than direct from Portsmouth or Plymouth. Just a thought.

Re top boxes, you can put any Givi box on any bike provided you fit the rack and base plate. The ones Givi make for the bike manufacturers are just colour coded to the bike that’s the only difference.

Why do you need another bike? You don’t even ride the KTM do you?

It will now be Portsmouth-Bilbao and back on foot, first. I need to keep things simple. I can do a "try-out" train trip to Portsmouth sometime, just for fun and to see how easy it is. To get to Portsmouth by train, I have to change at Reading (a station that I hate) and somewhere else (that I can't remember) so, it is not simple. Getting to Plymouth is simple with no changes, but you can only go to Santander. So, I can do Santander from Plymouth or Portsmouth, and Bilbao from only Portsmouth. That is not much point in going to Ireland to do the same.

Bike- wise, I am just playing. I got the KTM Duke 390 that will be kept. This fecking top box issue is a pain in the bum! I am just going to get the bike that I want. Weight is the overriding factor and I have a list of bikes to look at in Fowlers on Thursday. The final option will be to just get a Monster as it is very light and good quality. And it would look hideous with a great big top case, big enough for a full-face helmet - or two in the case of my mate's GIVI shit!

I will have a mooch in Fowlers but the Ducati Monster is the back-up option. Sod all this luggage shit! I will just buy what I like, if anything at all. I don't need to get anything as I have the Duke.

The original plan was to get it out of my compensation. After all, that is supposed to be my "reward" for all the shit that I've been put through. Now, we have a vengeful judge, who has decided that the High Court is just mad-short of work, so I have no idea what will happen next, and when. I've left all the floating turds with my solicitor and barrister to sort out. They don't get paid until the case is resolved, so it is as much their problem as mine!

@PerryL I take it that airports, associated with flying somewhere, is something you don't think you can cope with?
If that is the case, perhaps you could tag along with @Dirty Leeds next time he goes abroad? I'm sure he'd be glad of the company and help loading.... think of it as a lads holiday..... contribute to the diesel etc...could even save on the hotels either a twin room or perhaps a double (top n tail).

That’s a very good idea, stop Kipper getting lonely…

Portsmouth to Santander is a much better and shorter crossing - one night : 22 hours - the Plymouth ones are two nights.

Santander to Bilbao on the motorway is an hour - so still a day quicker than Plymouth to Bilbao !

If you’re not taking a vehicle why don’t you just fly there? EasyJet fly to Bilbao.

So, I can do Santander from Plymouth or Portsmouth, and Bilbao from only Portsmouth. That is not much point in going to Ireland to do the same

The only point in going via Rosslare is because apparently it’s considerably cheaper (and not much longer time wise) despite the fact you’re taking 2ferries - all to do with the demand levels I guess.

Thanks for all of the feedback,

I don't want to fly as I am worried that the pressure difference and campiness will make my leg swell to f**k. Since I can spend as much time as I like on the trip, I will take the ferry. I haven't made a final decision on Santander or Bilbao, yet. No rush. Santander will deffo be from Plymouth and Bilbao will be from Portsmouth. I think you can ( but don't know for sure) take the train from Santander to Bilbao, anyway. Anyway, I'd rather take the boat, even if not taking a vehicle. I am not worried about how long it takes. I did Plymouth Santander years ago on a Honda CX500! The ferry crossing was good. The CX500 was shit! Although having shaft drive was useful. Trouble is now to have shaft drive you either need a massively heavy BMW, or a Guzzi that is awkward for me with my legs and the V-twin.

Change of subject: Fowlers have emailed me further to a visit that I made ages ago - I can't even remember when. They have come back to me on a price for the 790 Duke with accessories that I must of mentioned. I am going there on Thursday, anyay. I really need to get my ST3 together and talk to my mate as he was going to have it, subject to selling his old BSA. He reckons that it is worth about £5,000 so will have the spondos easily!

There is some used stuff at Fowlers of interest to me. I have a long list! And I could do most of my options new. It comes down to a Duke 790, a Triumph Trident 660, Triumph Tiger Sport 660. or a Triumph Daytona 660. And then there is the Ducati Monster from Riders. The Top Case shit is binned. That cable thing is ok for the helmet, but not the gloves.

But the main thing is looks. It must be light, with reasonable range and speed, but looks are important to me. I do shallow mind! And why the Top Case idea is binned. It just offends. I am not a pizza delivery rider! Or Just Eats and all that crap:poop:

Just for kicks, I just configured a Monster+ on the Ducati site. When I came to save it, I found that I configure a Scrambler Icon with a Ducati top box ages ago. And although I dismissed the Scrambler as a pile of shit for only having a single front disc, this one does not offend me. And although nowhere near as powerful as a |Monster, it is thousands less money than my Monster+. It is very old school being air cooled and simple and might suit me better as I have to accept my limitations now.

With all that money you are saving you can afford a twin disc upgrade too.

I had a good lunch (curry) and too many beers! That put me to sleep for the afternoon!

But, back to bikes. I decided that I want a topbox to put my helmet in, if I stop anywhere on my ride (like a café or bike dealer, like Fowlers. But I am obsessed with bike weight (not my weight!) and that has stumped me a bit - not hard after a skin full

The only Ducati that lends itself to Mr Ugly is the Multistrada V2, but Ducati only list panniers fir it and not a topbox! I looked at a BMW F900R, but it is heavyish (219 Kg I think)

Any suggestions? Here's a challenge: a bike less than 200kg for which a topbox big enough for a full-face helmet is available.
Ducati ST3 dry weight 201kg according to that there Internet. If only you could find one....

Glad the scooter delivery picture helped in your decision making 👍

Really? I never looked it up, although I meant to. I need to get the fairing back on anyway. It was all off to get at the battery and spark plus. That tells me that I shouldn't do anything until I get the ST3 together and can try it for weight. If it feels manageable I need to get it a Mot and insure it. It is a good bike - though worth F all - but would do me for the foreseeable. I won't by anything more until I properly evaluate it.
