Mad Dash

Just visiting
As a 1098R owner, I am EXTREMELY angry that some FOUR weeks after I pay £24,000 for this bike that Ducati UK announce they are pre-registering 15 of these bikes to meet targets, apparently 85 have been sold and they need 100, hence another 15. Now, let's not kid ourselves here, 15REGISTERED vehicles will not sell overnight at full list. If they have sold 85 so far, then 15 will not sell quickly - unless they are DISCOUNTED. I don't know about other 1098R owners, 85 of us by the looks of it, but I will be absolutely FUMING if that bike drops as much as a penny. A pre-regsitered bike is, in effect, second hand - so Ducati UK, sign onto the forum, reply to this thread and assure me and others that you're not discounting 1098R's before the bloody paint's dry on the first batch. If this happens I'm FINISHED with Ducati, starting with the Desmosedici being cancelled.       I've changed my mood to "mad" only becuase there isn't an "Absolutely F@CKING FURIOUS"

Hey. Look on the bright side. At least you can spell Desomsedici now:D

Does anyone know for certain that DUK have pre-registered these 15 bikes? I've seen it posted on another forum that they would do it if needed but have not seen definite confirmation that they have. Usually they try and throw "incentives" like cheap finance or free performance parts in before discounting.

TBH any new bike is going to depreciate as soon as you roll it out of the showroom unlesss the manufacturer has kept supply tighter than demand which unfortunately Ducati probably can't do if they want to hit homolgation numbers for racing limited edition bikes but I commented on that in another thread and p1ssing off owners who shelled out for an R isn't going to help.

Its on the DUK website. So it must be true!

Usual format to hit a number would have been a quiet word with the dealers and a "registration bonus" to incentivise people out of their current bike. That way there is no distress selling and values remain high.

But to post it on the website is a touch dramatic. If they were going to do it why tell the world?

There is no telling where they are going to go, but they need to be sold. I doubt if DUK want £300k of stock lying about.

One way they COULD have done it would have been a PX allowance to any current 'R' owner. I for one would have jumped at a deal with less pain to get out the XEROX.

I'm still up for a deal if there is anyone out there who is getting a supply. Obviously PX'ing the XEROX!;)

PM ME!!:D

Jesus Gizmo, it's on their damn web page (Ducati.co.uk) I love the bike, love the brand - but IF they discount we all lose... and let's be honest it hasn't happened YET... but it's on the cards. Here's the text copied from their web page. I don't have an issue with bikes devaluing as soon as they drive out the showroom, I do have an issue with bikes devaluing whilst they're IN the damn showroom. Anyway, sorry, I'm shouting WITH you, not at you :)
Current BSB technical regulations state that that a minimum number of 100 units must be registered for the road in the UK by 1st June and therefore, in order to be eligible, Ducati UK will register the handful of bikes that do not yet have customer orders – expected to be 10-15 bikes with 85-90 already going to customers by the deadline. The full UK allocation of 1098R for 2008 is expected to be no more than 105 bikes.

Aaarr man I’m just happy to have got mine and it's worth every penny. :D

if you are happy and enjoy riding it, it is worth every penny, bikes are rarely investments, you could always stick the money into something boring like an ISA but you can't blat that around on a sunny evening with a big stupid grin on your face :)

couldn't agree more, I was happy to pay £24k, and LOVE IT - but if the guy down the road gets one for less, or an over allowance on a p/x - are you happy with that, I'm sure as sh1t not here to put money into the Ducati UK Christmas Bonus Fund. Here Ducati, have a beer on me

ooo wheres ma cheque book  ........sorry madash :D

no worries mate , you crack on. It's a fantastic bike, having had a 999R it's SIGNIFICANTLY better, that's not the point. Anyway, I await the response from Ducati UK. All I want is to hear these words "relax you @@@@, calm down, we're not under any circumstances discounting these wonderful bikes by so much as a penny".... I'm happy with that. I have my doubts that DUK will say that though.....

i never check the DUK website :(

if there are no more coming into the UK this year its just a case of dealers sitting on them and possibly giving a warranty from actual date of purchase not registration and maybe offering other incentives not a discount, the problem may come next year, you'd expect to sell more of a limited edition model in the year it is launched as there are no S/H available if they need to sell another 100 to homologate again next season and still have unsold 08 bikes it could be hard. I'd think not though DD16RR sales mean R sales are probably less than 999R sales were so with no DD!6's left 1098R's should be in demand

Me ! Me ! Me !

I'll take one!:D

eh - did you not get them as freebies before ??? I had your Fila 999R Rep, lost a fortune on that too !!! :D :D :D Took a bath on the Xerox Rep, will take a shower on the 1098R and no doubt a SWIMMING POOL on the Desmosedici....

i never check the DUK website :(

I wish I hadn't checked the site either, I'll not do that again - I only went on to see how to spell Desmosedici, Fergie claims I made a typo.... Fergie would  But your theory stacks up, 1098R's in demand, but we'll see. We know who the "stack em high, sell 'em cheap" guys are in the UK bike market - I'll be reading the "comic" cover to cover over the next few weeks.

got to say, if i was buying a pre registered bike i'd rightly be expecting a hefty discount on it, as after all, it will have had two owners by the time i came to sell it.
on £12,000 cars you could expect between £1500-£2000 discount, on a £24,000 car id be looking at double that. I'd expect the same from a 1098r costing that much. you'd be mad not to.

I have taught you well young Skywalker!!:D

If memory serves me, Aprillia did this on a bigger scale with RSV's a few years ago which resulted in a huge fall in residual’s!!

Whilst I appreciate what you are saying, I also understand what DUK are doing - it's called business. They must meet the BSB regulations or they'd face a fine of some description I'd assume. It's tough I know, but we all know the reasons behind it.

Furthermore, it's not like they're pre-reging half of the 105 bikes to hit the UK roads, we're talking a handful. Nor are there going to be a few hundered of these stunning machines out there.

They are limited edition, aspirational bikes that in my opinion will not depreciate like a Ford Focus (et-al) which dealers pre-reg, discount and stack in hundred’s to try and entice the customers in! Just go to your local Evans Halshaw or Arnold Clark to see that old trick in action....

We'll see what DUK do, I for one would be very surprised if they offer these bikes at massively discounted prices > £500 would be disappointing.

Drop them an e-mail, see what they say?

Of course, you are absolutely 100% right... Yet DUK and Dealers claim there will be no discounting.... time will tell.

Quick reality check, it's NOT business, you don't charge customers FULL LIST and less than 4 weeks later discount that same product. DUK have got themselves in a position whereby by the 1st June (a week away) they needed to sell 100 1098R's to meet homologation rules (hence why DUK "bought them"). Did they not see this coming ??? Jesus Christ, they didn't see my bike coming, it "turned up at the dealer" - DUK seem to have a planning problem. If my business was under target, we'd know about it MONTHS before and react to it with less of a knee jerk reaction. It works out that by pre-registering 15 bikes, that's 15% of their planned 2008 stocks, that's enough to cause a residual wobble. The rest of your post is 100% right, they are STUNNING MACHINES. £500 would be disappointing you say, I agree - but IF, and let's remember this hasn't happened yet, IF they discount, it will be more than £500

the likely scenario ....DUK will throw in goodies ..allthough cant imagine what 1098r has just about everything.....and like was mentioned ..wouldnt fancy paying full wack for a bike with lets face it ( a previous ) owner ...time will tell ...and also wouldnt like to be in mad dash`s position ..i think F@@@@@g furious would be a understatement !!!!!!

Ok, where have DUK said they are going to discount these bikes?

You have already said previously that there is going to be no change to the list price!

Ducati UK Link

The simple fact is, DUK must register 100 of these bikes by 1 June for the purposes of the BSB rules. The only way to do that, probably because of delay’s in getting them to the UK, is to pre-register 15 bikes. So what, big deal!! They are only bringing 105 to the UK! Still a very limited number of a desirable bike.

Now if they were to bring a further 100 bikes here, all pre-registered that would really be a kick in the goolies! Watch the residuals fall like bricks!!

I agree, when manufacturers pre-register large numbers of their product, of course you can expect a discount. But we’re talking 100’s of not 1000’s of units here. To expect a ~4k discount on a 24k very limited run road legal race bike because they’ve had to pre-register 15 of 105 units…… not a chance!

Still, let’s wait and see what DUK do end up doing. If they do discount that much – trading standards maybe should be informed…….

You have e-mailed DUK yes?

trading standards would be more interested in attempts to maintain a retail price than a company selling at a price they choose, retail price maintenance is illegal across the EU and if a dealer choses to sell a 1098R at a discount it would be up to them, DUK cannot force them to sell at list price.

Remember you may be talking about second owner bikes here, they would not be new once they are registered despite having no or low miles

Bullit, you keep missing the point - I've just bought a 1098R for full list FOUR weeks ago - tell me you'd not be @@@@ed off with the POSSIBILITY of discounted bikes. If you're happy with that scenario, then your money means less to you than me - I work too F******* hard for mine. And for the umpteenth time - I have stated I HAVE contacted Ducati and await their returned call. All I ask is confirmation that the pre-registered bikes are NOT being discounted - it's a simple bloody question. C'mon DUK, waiting....

Ok, you paid a chunk of cash for a bike and four weeks later DUK have said that to meet a racing commitment they have to pre-register 15 bikes. They have NOT said “to meet the needs of the BSB we must SELL 15 more bikes before 1 June, so here have, these one’s for 4k less” have they???

I fully appreciate your point, not missed it all. I too work hard for my pay cheque and would be very peeved if having spent 20k + on a bike, that four weeks later you can buy one for less from the same dealer – but as yet, as you also say, that is not the case!

Yes, you are asking a simple question and hopefully you’ll get a simple answer. I'm sure you're not the only one is this position.

Personally, I can't see why they'd have to discount them if they are so good, desirable and all that.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

...god this is like day-jar-view!!! the year was '98, when I used to sell this lovely machines, Ducati dropped their prices for the 916 during the season, I remember irrate customers coming into our showroom and venting steam that they had just shelled out £12500 odd for their 916 and they were suddenly devalued far more than they should have been. (can't remember exactly how much). Horrible situation! :(

Right - to put an official reply on this and help stop the speculation that is present.

I have had a discussion with Ducati UK this morning and have the hard facts here.

To begin, the first approach is not to associate pre-registering machines, with discounting. This is a very different thing all together.

This handful of 1098R's are a very special bike indeed and represent the homologation of a unique racing bike. A bike that has won 6 out of the first 8 BSB races this year.

At the end of the day, THAT is one of the major goals here - to keep racing. On an equal standing, protection of the value of each machine and brand strength is a priority. Our combined network approach will ensure every one of these aspects.

To keep racing, our network will pre-register 10 - 15 bikes to ensure homologation. Let's refer to these bikes as Homologation Special 1098R.
These Specials will be supplied to their new owners at full list price (£24,000) with a letter from the Managing Director of Ducati UK explaining the situation and thanking the customer for their support.
In addition, the customer will also be given a certificate from all three of the race teams (signed by managers / owners etc) further thanking them for their support.
These letters will stay with the machine for all time to validate the extra-special circumstances surrounding these bikes and will fully explain the process behind the action of having Ducati UK as the first owner.
Lastly as a note of gratitude, the customer will be offered hospitality at a British Superbikes Round courtesy of our network.

If a customer wishes to buy a 1098R in the UK they will have the only option of buying a Homologation Special 1098R.

We as a network (and as a dealer, I can promise publicly) will not / have not, been given any instruction, bonus or allowance to discount these machines in the slightest.

The 1098R is a machine that has already proved itself as a devastating race bike in near standard trim. It is a bike that represents remarkable development and componentry. It's value is clearly apparent.

I hope this helps.

Mart:)

1098R - The DUK Side

OK Guys and Gals, had a lengthy conversation with the MD of Ducati UK (and Martin) and I have been given assurances that NO discounts / incentives will be offered to the dealer network likely to impact the retail selling price of these 1098R's. I'm happy with that. I'm not seeking an unreasonable guarantee, and DUK have answered my (and other peoples) concerns in a concise, professional and courteous manner - thanks guys.
Please remember though that you race to SELL, not sell to race - what I mean by that is we, as the customer, need looked after !!! So, that ends that saga, anyone out there looking for a 1098R, they are worth EVERY penny of the £24,000 - if you're thinking about one, BUY - and help the team at the same time. I'm out of this thread, but I tell you what, some EXCELLENT input and comments.;)
