Yesterdays ride out in the snow

Haven't been out on the roadbike for a week so we got the dirtbikes out and went trail riding. 100 miles from Stockport over the Peak District to Sheffield, then Chesterfield and back. Out for a good 7 hours. Enough snow to make it interesting but not enough to stop us.

Great fun getting the back end spinning up and sliding sideways in the snow. Its perfect when the snow is fresh and hasn't frozen overnight, suprising amount of grip.

Happy days, was supposed to be MTB'ing yesterday but have been full of cold (and beer) for a couple of weeks now, would love a dirt bike to play on, last one I had a go on was YZ80 big wheel about 18 years ago I reckon !

I'll get Matty to post his pics up, they cycled up High Street, he has some stunning photos from yesterday !

Aye Ian, it was one of the best days in the Peak i've had for years, although i know the trails really well, i've messing about with GPS loading regular routes we use.
 
As it turns out it was a good job I didn't go, High Street is not for me at my level of fitness at the moment, Claife Heights is alot more appealing !

All my mates have off roaders now. very jealous !
 
Awwwwww........I should have asked Santa for a trailie. Ive not had any 2 wheel fun for months now! Gizza shot????

That looks a bit cold for me Shaun, soft snow is OK but I get very scared when it gets icy as well. See you managed to sort out the photo posting :), its neat when they display, camera phone quality looks OK to me.

GPS of routes might be useful for RTL it can probably work out distances between junctions which means we could give accurate routes.
 
BDG could you let us know a your routes around the sheff and chez area ? I've got a Suzuki crosser now and havent been able to find anywhere to take the bike yet that is legal.

I'm not being evasive, but its very difficult because this poxy government are moving the goalposts with the NERC bill.

Basically BOATS byeways open to all traffic and some UCR'S unclassified county roads will remain legal, whereas previously legal RUPP's roads used as public paths, some UCR's and bridleways with dual staus will all be downgraded to there lowest status, i.e footpaths, and become illegal. This is very imminent.

There are numerous DMMO's definative map modification orders that have been put in by the TRF trail riders fellowship, but it depends on the outcome of these, plus if the govenmnet backdate the cut off point for the claims.

Strictly speaking a crosser, unless converted to road trim would be illegal anyway, but hey so is speeding:D

The lanes i was on i've been using legally for nearly 20 years but i need to check their forthcoming status as of about February.

Best suggestion is join your local TRF branch ( www.trf.org.uk)
for info on your local area. The TRF are not a bunch of wooly pully types that some people expect and are the only people fighting to keep the lanes open.

Currently before the NERC bill there are approx 5000 miles of legal trails (this could be cut by half) and about 150,000 miles of footpaths but the NEO NAZIS of the Ramblers Association are happy with that.
I hate Janet Street-Porter and her cronies, but they have been very effective spreading dis information and lobbying in the halls of power.

I'd better shut up before i really start ranting.

Although i've used the GPS a lot out in the desert, where its brilliant. Superb in the dunes where it all looks the same, or in a sandstorm, when otherwise you'd just have to park up and sit it out, i've just been following pre programmed routes that John the main guide has researched.

I'm only just starting to put my own stuff in. However i can defo give you 2 GPS units and possibly 4 if the other guys will lend them out. This would give you the ability to pre run the routes and then allocate them to different run leaders, enabling the group sizes to be kept down which personally i think would be far better.

It would also give us an excuse to pre run everything, oh dear, hard work:D but i'm sure you know all of the routes anyway, and you can do it off the mapping software as well. Any excuse for a ride out.
