Which Ducati got you hooked on Ducati ?

So Chiz if you are an experienced ex racer how come you keep falling off road bikes???

:p:p:p:finger::finger::twak::twak::mmph::mmph::handbag::handbag::boxing::boxing:See me after school Campbell. ;)
We will discuss the art of bike racing & falling off, over a large Peroni or five, next time I see you.
Even if it means me traveling to darkest Wooler to do it. :)

Oh yeah! The fiddlers Arms! God it was a disaster when it ceased to exist.....I used to come down from Leuchars to visit my brother in Leith at weekends and we'd go down the grassmarket. I usually try to get a night out in Edinburgh when I'm over , miss the pubs. Hope they get a new ferry sorted out.[/QUOTE]

Anither Fids regular, help ma boab!

back in 1967 i saw my first ducati.a 250 orange frame white tank & mudguards. [i thought it looked good but i was only twelve].then in 1971 county motors in kirkcaldy had a 160 monza in the showroom window.went in to buy it but the salesman said no son we will have the bike longer than you buy something else. Then in 2007 i got my 1991 750ss half faired white frame & wheels and since then the disease has really kicked in.with the gt 1000 and finally a 160 monza long term project

Way back in the mid 70's, I used to drool over a orange 450 desmo on display at
Kitsons m/c's, Westgate rd, Newcastle..... I was 16 and proud owner of a Garelli Tiger Cross..... The Italian bond had already started!

My first bike was the Gilera enduro.
It was the fastes moped in East Lothian blew fizzies into the weeds, my mate had a Yamaha trailie and fitted a big bore kit (70cc) he did not mention it went out for a run down Kirk street and he took off chased him only to come upon a cloud of smoke from his back tyre he bent the crank and wrecked the motor. Still had the fastest moped after that.:)

It was a long wooing before I got my Ducati. I got my RD250C when I was a 19 year old RAF apprentice in 79. .

I'm a former RAF 'Appo' as well!

Did my 'time' at Halton from 87 to 90 as a member of 149 entry, in fact we're having a 25 year reunion on 17th March should be a laugh.

What entry were you? Gotta be 133 or thereabouts? Halton or Cosford?

Ah, good times (rose tinted glasses firmly on - some of it was sh1te TBH!)

Started as a 130, had a bike smash outside the armoury with said halfwit and Kawasaki, passed out as a 131 after smashing my shoulder off the side of a big orange bus a year later on the way to IoM. They used to call me Billy the Skid. I was rather good at crashing the RD. Could probably show Chiz a few tricks. Tonight I managed to fall of a horse - just to keep in practice. I appreciate a bike that handles well and has good brakes.

When I was a kid we lived in Kent and my best mate and I used to go into Paul Smarts shop in Maidstone. He always had loads af leaflets and stickers and was only too happy for us to wander round looking at the bikes.
I remember his silver 750 being on display but, to be honest we were more interested in the Fantic mopeds at the time.
Some years later I was at croft on my FS1e when Pete Davis on the Jota and Dave Railton on his 900ss were fighting out the Avon production series. I remember the Jota winning but the Ducati was the one that did it for me. Until I bought one in in 1980. My first 900ss was a dog and I couldn't afford it. Moments of greatness were overshadowed by phone calls and trips ( on the train ) to Sports Motorcycles who gleefully took every penny of my hard earned to keep the thing sort of running.
The final insult was when two upstarts on 350lc's overtook me on the Sunday ride up to Tranwell Airfield near ponteland. I'll show these boys a thing or two or so I thought. The lads rode them like they had stolen them ( probably had ) and the old ss tied itself in knots trying to keep up. The next week I sold it and bought a brand new Laverda Montjuic from TT motorcycles at Southwick but that's another story and I know some of you have a fondness for old Montys so I'll leave it at that. XBR136V or 'Triggers Broom' as it should be called appeared on Ebay a couple of years back, when I sent the vendor a message telling him I'd re framed it following an 'incident' he failed to mention it in the ad.
Anyhow, I now have a couple of 900ss's and am quite happy with them. Although one has developed a vibration which feels suspiciously like main bearings ...........

about 15 years ago was with a friend who was buying his first bike and whilst he was sorting it out I mooched around the showroom, there was a yellow 748 and I sat on it and loved it. Didn't even have a licence so never ever considered it. Passed my test a few years later and bought a Honda (shudder). Went with friend to the opening of Ducati Manchester and joked saying make sure i leave the credit card at home... walked in to see a stunning yellow 748r in the middle of the showroom. Sat on it for hours, ordered it and picked it up a week later.... never looked back :)

ducatis have given me some of the biggest highs and lowest lows and been the trigger in some major parts of my life :)

sorry to join the party late, sometimes don't have internet or time as I work away

anyway I am a sucker for Ducati watching King Carl do his stuff, wanted one sooo much but couldn't afford so was running on a R6 in '98

took me a few years to eventually change one and in 2007 I switched to a brand new 749 which was pretty good then about 4 years ago I picked up a a decent 996 and have since been almost obsessed...I admit I have changed a few things on her and some may scowl that I have a non original (kept some OE parts, sold others) but it is still a Ducati and I totally love her. Tend s to be a moneyless pit ha ha and I wonder if I should change to a modern Ducati but will that stop me spending???

anyway glad to be a Ducatisti and when the topic of bikes comes up in conversation I am proud to say everyone drools over the fact that I have a 996..a classic

It was a bit of a cumulative thing for me.
I'd seen pics of a few here and there but never in the flesh.
The first one that made me sit up and take notice was on an advert in What Bike magazine, an old publication that used to be a good mag the way Top Gear actually used to be a car show! It covered everything you could imagine and all the stuff in between, new old, small and large, exotic and workaday, it was ideal for me as it had the stuff I aspired to, the big 4 strokes but covered the stuff I was riding back then, small capacity strokers.
Anyway, wandering a bit there.
There was a inner back page ad in one for the Ducati 907ie Paso with the advertising line, If Ferrarri made motorcycles, this would be it!!
That was the first bike that made me notice them, it's gorgeous streamlined body was unlike anything i'd seen, 'sports bikes, such as they were then were not much more than a workaday bike with a fairing.
The one that made my jaw drop was the 916 however, then I heard them, (never heard one run prior to this), wow, it sounded so different, don't get me wrong, I love the sound of an inline 4 blipping the throttle and screaming on acceleration but this was like nothing else I'd ever heard.
There have only been 2 bikes I've ever looked at and wanted from first sight, one was the ZXR750H1, the other, the 916
There have been many other bikes i've liked and owned but these two are the ones i've lusted after
I still like the Paso and would love to see one in the flesh, I never have yet, I believe theres at least one on here, i've seen it on someones avatar so hopefully i'll see that at a get together sometime.
Oddly, I find myself drawn more and more to the older 900ss and smaller siblings than the Paso now, if I were to get another I could easily imagine it being one of the 900ss models, theres something raw and purposeful about the look, it's a bike thats saying i'm here to go fast and handle round a track and you'd damn well better not get in my way, :)

On a side note and on the subject of ads in bike mags, I recall an ad campaign by Harley Davidson and Honda's retort the following month, really wish i'd kept them.
Harleys' ad showed the big touring beastie, black background, tasteful lighting, tagline was
For 500 less you could get a Honda Goldwing, but you don't get the Heritage, soul, camaradierie, way of life, blah blah blah blah
Following month, pic of a Honda Goldwing, black background tastefully lit and shot, tagline
For 500 more you could get a slower, more unreliable, noisier piece of history!

Made me chuckle a lot

After years riding British iron (Matchless, Triumph, BSA DBD32, BSA DBD34, Vincent Black Shadow and one Honda 400F2) I was made redundant by my Company and decided to visit my local Honda dealer. In his showroom was a 900 SL Mk1 and an 851. Got some details and went home to to think about it. Eventually bought the 900 SL Mk1 and had it from '95 until '05. Had a couple of years off then I bought a brand new 749R, didn't get on with that so sold it and bought a '95 748SP and a '00 748R that keep each other company in my heated garage. Both are in original ex-factory condition.
The one I wish I still had - the Mk 1 900 SL.

Forgot to say, I was ex-apprentice too, 81st Entry, 1955 - 58.

996sps partly of foggy partly a race i had with a yellow 1 and a blade from shap to kendal on the a6,me in a 2.0zetec caterham, both stopped at morrisons petrol station.and we had a chatt, always wanted 1 from then.........now living the dream

Wish I could say it was a spiritual revelation as a 916 or 1098 flew past me on the road, but sorry it was that BMW went watercooled and I wanted an aircooled twin. That and Marys irrepressible enthusiasm for SDC everytime I met her and Walter at Largs:D

It all started for me when

As a teenager I was at knockhill and Beveridge Park quite often through the racing season Jim Anderson, Francy and Forbie in the production class on there bevel twins man alive the presence, the sound, awesome.

I also remember with fondness DB and his black and gold bevel 900ss on the Tay Valley outings and events, drool, drool Derek.

I could never afford them when I was old enough to be legal, and none of the following models really rang my bell, untill I finally cracked in 1991 and traded in my RC30, for a new Ducati 851 SP3, then it all started.

21 years with Mr Ducati this year and without doubt the most fantastic biking years of my life.

Scott

Can I be the first to not be drawn to Ducati via the old tech, but rather the new; in particular the Diavel, which I'm now a happy owner of.

1979 and I was looking to swap a z650, tried a z1000, which was the same, only bigger. Tried a Darmah out of curiousity , and was smitten immediately. The rest, as they say, is history.

The iconic 916/748/996 etc era of Ducati's for me. Spotted a brand new one 12 - 14 years ago and always said i wanted one. Cannot see myself selling mine, just adding to it.
