When Buying a 999R what should one consider?

If someone was to consider buying a 999R to add to there Pikes Peak, R, Corse and SPS collection which generation of 999R should be most desirable?
What are the differences between generation 1 and 2 of the 999R?

All advice gratefully received.

There's a lot of personal preferences with these.

Some say 1st model some say later.
The limited editions - some say Fila, some say Xerox

The red ones seem to have levelled out in value over the last 2 or 3 years where the base and S models have climbed so expect them to start increasing in value again. The Fila and Xerox seem to have climbed more.

I have a Red 999R and a Fila but bought at a better time luckily so show a good profit if I sell :)

I would consider the 999r model to have 3 variants,
1- Grey swingarm, Grey frame. wide spoke forged wheels -2003
2- Black swingarm, Red frame, narrow spoke wheels-2004
3 - different front fairing, slightly higher hp figures given - 2006?

I have had 2 version 2's and personally don't like the grey swingarm version as it looks cheap in comparison to the later models, so the 2004+
looks the best ( only my opinion )

....Something other than a 999R* 🤷‍♂️

*You did say all advice would be gratefully received by the way.

What would you recommend, in the investment Ducati department....
I'm going with the D16 and a couple of R's to replace my Pfizer shares.... automatic sell at $78/share......
Thinking Jan/Feb/Mar.... when people are desperate after Christmas and with Tax bills to pay.

I've a Desmo and a couple of R's. I'll be happy to relieve you of bags of cash. 😇

Comes with snow tyres as well by the look of it 😁

Have you considered unloading some of the stock you have and reaching the dessie?

No.
Unless a bargain comes along the plan is as follows.
Easter unload the 748 after some slight changes.
Move the collection, except the Pikes Peaks to secure storage.
Repurpose the coach house to living accommodation, Doc M wet room toilet/Shower/ walk-in bath and kitchenette.
See how much space can be made / saved and adjust the collection to suit.

Thanks for your help SEV...
Very useful in this technical thread.
@The GOAT please could you tidy up and get rid of the dross?

What's made you look at the 999's AC?
I would guess investment potential 🤔
But the time was 7 to 10 years ago really for the 999R. Ducati R models historically follow a trend - de value for 10 years, then climb for 10 well beyond their original cost , then steadily climb after that - they will hit the 40 year cycle and then level off and may even fall, so the lower the number built the better.

The Pani R (proper one) has bucked the trend and doesn’t seem to be dropping any where near 50% of its original value - time will tell, but there’s more people investing than 10 or 20 years ago which I think is holding the prices up more than before.

If I was buying now for a behind the sofa bike I would go Pani R 2015 on… for its aesthetics and potential increase in value - although it won’t do what the 748R / 749R/ 996R / 999R / 1098R’s have done I don’t think 👍 my zero mile one went back to the factory 🏭 but I won’t be replacing it…

I've already got one of them.

Down here 748R's, 996R's etc do well, honestly 749/999R's do poorly in comparison 1098R's so so, Pani R's average. Defo the 748/916 - 998 is where I would put my money if I wanted to invest in a bike again.

Why haven't @Exige and @Robarano - the loaded type bought Desmosedicis or are they not in that league?

Robs got one, I never wanted one 🤷‍♂️ and I is skint 🤔

Has he??

Don't recall seeing photos back in the day on DF, when did his petty cash box fork out for one of those?
He never stops posting pictures at every opportunity - he's had it years, bought it when they were cheap the wise old owl 🦉

It's in the calendar, surly you bought a calendar? 🤷‍♂️

I don't have a 999R and I think there is a chance that the investment that would grow. Once these works are complete I will get a D16RR. If not a 999R then may be a late 998 special.. r or fe... not matrix.
