What can you recommend watching?

I watched the 1970 origanal Catch 22 the other day, when i first saw it many years ago i thought it was funny. On reflection i was young when i saw it but knowing what i know now it's funny in places but brutal under the suface. This scene is from the remake that i haven't watched and i don't want to but would like to read the book.

The book is excellent, I recommend it.

Watched Longlegs last night. Heard it was good, but very disappointed. Standard Hollywood boogie-man schlock horror comic-strip tripe. A pretty meaningless plot, wooden acting - particularly from Maika Monroe - and stupid Halloween mask make-up and fake blood everywhere. Nothing remotely creepy about it, jump-scares you could see coming a mile off and a pace so leaden that tension was non-existent.
It seemed to be just a disjointed montage of references to other films like Silence of the Lambs, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street without ever finding its own identity.

The 2011 British film The Awakening that followed was better but not by much. Dominic West and Rebecca Hall were fine leads but in the end it was little more than a sentimentalised attempt by the BBC's film unit to remake The Others, again with jump-scares that advertised themselves so far in advance they became cliches. And towards the end when the Rebecca Hall character's back story begins to come out, it just descended into a schmoozy tear-fest.

Just watched Blue Iguana on Amazon prime, just the sort of films i like!!:)

@WAYNE Have you watched Kraven on Netflix?
I think it might be your cup of tea maybe.
No not seen that, i won't use Netflix after there treatment of Henry Cavell and them not sticking to the lore of the Witcher!! They had a man who is a geek when it comes to the Witcher, even the writer Andrzej Sapkowski was blowns away by Henrys portrayal of Geralt!! The writers absolutley butchered it and made all about the women and it got so woke it was silly!! That show would of been massive if left alone, it still pisses me off now.
Just looked and it's on Amazon Prime, i'll watch that later, it's 4 quid to buy!!(y)

Not sure it’s worth £4. 😂

I'm re-watching Pluribus, Season One (Goat knows when Season Two will come out).

There's a couple of aspects to it that should mean I would have no time for it - principally, there are predominantly strong female leads and nearly invisible male characters in the first few episodes - but it remains one of the most fascinating and entertaining shows of the past few years, if not a couple of decades.

I watch each episode with a feeling of delight. Proper sf, with proper humour and an amazing sense of mystery/bafflement throughout. It hardly hits a dud note throughout.
The lead character, a cranky, middle-aged lesbian, is somehow both engaging and understandable - not a sentence I would ever have thought I'd see myself type!

Get past the surface impressions and dive in!

I also recommend Mobland, starring Tom Hardy Helen Mirren & Pierce Brosnan

Mostly huge entertainment not least of which for the casting. A measure of jumping-the-shark has crept in but it's forgivable so far.

"007" as a complete psycho
"The Queen" as a foul-mouthed old homicidal maniac.
Joanne Froggatt as someone who really doesn't belong in Downton Abbey :ROFLMAO:

Tom Hardy is pretty much cast within type. Paddy Considine is pretty good but under-used, in my opinion.

And in Season 2, Johnny Flynn plays a villain that is near the top of the chart of My All-time Favourite Bad Guys.

Very worth a watch. I found it by accident. I thought I was clicking on the series, The Gentlemen (that reminds me, I must remember to watch that).

I couldn’t make it through the first episode, is it worth giving it another try?

The part in the last season when Zelda from Terrahawks and Brosnan started singing was painful to watch.

Yes. Absolutely.

You get past "It's a cranky old lesbian, I ain't watching that" and you get into premise of the show, the consequences. The dialog is pretty damned sharp and you go from vaguely disliking the cranky, unlikable lead character to a fascination with what she's up against and how she deals with it all.

My knee-jerk reaction to the show was to simply wait until the lead's sexuality became the most important aspect of the story, eclipsing all else, but I soon realised that she's gay, that's all, don't worry about it. The expected eclipse never happens.

Any modern series is going to have a meta where woke is front & centre. I accept that. What I don't accept is the woke being used as a mallet to hit me over the head. Shows get one, or at most, two free swings and after that, it's done and I'll junk it. Pluribus was the story, it wasn't a woke nagging session.

And the final line of Season One... my jaw dropped and then I laughed in sheer delight. Maybe the best ending of a season I have ever seen but that impact depends on how invested you are in the story. I am fully invested so far.

Season Two may well be a dumpster fire with the wokery dialled up to ten, and if so, so be it. Season One though is a peach of a show.
