VW take over ?

Since Ducati is (I think) now privately held, VW could not mount a hostile takeover and would need to buy the company with the agreement of the current owners.

Having owned a VW and a Ducati, I don't think VW could do anything useful for Ducati...

Could not see an Italian company going to the Germans.

Were the Italians and the Germans not quite a bit friendly 70 years ago.

VW have long wanted to own a motorcycle company. Ducati maybe, but another possible is MV. They are up for sale, and is a prestige mark that they could do a good turn on.

Given that II just got rid of the shareholders and made it a private company its not like VW can mount a takeover ! Saying that I do know how II have operated in the past and ultimately they buy and sell companies for profit, operating profit is not the game, the business is the asset if you can get your money back with a healhy profit they'll sell the asset..... I do think the Bonomie family will try and keep Ducati for as long as they can, their links to Benetton go back years and I can't see them selling Ducati on a whim, if there is an offer on the table from VW it would need to be a big one before they'ed sell.

stupid polemics...

nevertheless now the possibility to get mv is as good/cheap as never before.

but who knows maybe ducati could buy themself another company.
obviously they tried several months/years ago to get moto guzzi.

VW/Ducati

Just one point on the press release guys. Porsche took over VW, not the other way round. Puts a different spin on it I think; luxury brands and all. Also, VW own Lamborghini through their Audi brand. Don't see the technical tie in, would Porsche want the desmo valve gear? can't see it, they've done enough racing themselves to have their own high performance engine technology.

Don't forget that the Police also raided Porsche's offices recently over share trading allegations.

Lastly, VW is also behind Bugatti's revival. I don't think that's been a bad turnaround ;)

They didn't.

Porsche had enough options to take over VW but couldn't put the final bit of the financing in place. The failure cost the top man and FD their jobs, and VW will now own 49% of Porsche by the end of this year.

The goverment of Qatar also own a good slice of Porsche.

It makes no difference anyway, the owners of VW and the owners of Porsche are all related (apart from the Qatari's).

i think it's a fab idea, we'll then have a Ducati GOLF Gti, which'll just delight the sh1t out of derek :D:D

yeah its in mcn today if vw cant get ducati id think they would go for mv if its really up for grabs.

Since i work for vw nways maybe they will let me transfer to mv? Id have more fun there thats for sure :D hehe

i think suzuki would be a more likely candidate for vw, they have a car and motorbike arm, more akin to what vw are used to. and seeing as the models between suzuki cars and volkswagen dont really clash it could be a good mix for them.
fiat could if they decided to, spend the money on ducati and they already have several tie ins between alfa romeo, doing the 147 ducati, fiat doing the monster panda and of course ferari with ducati using their wind tunells and design help. whether fiat would want to tho now is another matter. they are currently the 3rd biggest automotive producer in the world and are busy reorganising chrysler, dodge and i think pontiac whom they have just taken controlling stakes in and preparing to relaunch fiat in the states either through attached dealerships or as rebadged dodges etc. remember fiat are acknowledged as the worl leaders in small automotive engines . this of course would leave the door open for piaggio makers of vespa etc, free to buy ducati but after their recent pusrchase of aprillia, i somehow cant see that happening, but then again piaggio are the third biggest two wheel producer in the world

HD In Trouble

Yes, for once MCN was reasonably interesting for longer than a quick scan through !
Harley D appears to be in big trouble and may shut down a factory in the States, MV is for sale after one year of ownership and Buell has been shut down completely. The Buell name can be sold on and Erik Buell remains at HD in his current engineering type role.
I did wonder if Erik Buell might buy the name back and start again.
It seems to be more to do with the financial mess of credit sold and not paid back and exposure to the American financial troubles.

It looks as though HD deviated from their core business and what they specialise in and sank money in big time. Let's face it Buell has a mixed reputation, poor reliability and limited sales which doesn't seem to have grown since HD took over. MV was a bizarre move cosidering the extreme and exclusive sportsbikes they concentrated on.
Let's hope Ducati don't sink mega bucks into this Adventure Trailie - oops i think they may have done already !
:p
