Tyres ( or 'Ters' for our Dundee readers)

I know 'Tyres' is 2nd only to 'Oil' on forums but here goes..

848 on OE Pirellis, 1300 miles.

I am doing;

Monday 24th ERS Track Evening
Friday 28th DG Track Evening
Sat 29th Focused Events all day K/Hill (still to be booked)
Weds 2nd Focused Events all day Cadwell Park

Question is (cos I have no experience of ANY Pirellis) if I do Knockhill Saturday, will I need to change rubber before Cadwell? I would have thought not, what do you guys reckon?

When I do change, what is recommended road/track tyre - I like Michelin Pilot Power 2CT; are they still up to the job or are there better options out there??

for what its worth, dont use a "road" tyre for the track. Grip is everything, and if the tyre is finished, then you have had your fun, so put a new one on

Was at 4 DG tracknights at knockhill last year & my tyres lasted 2500 before needing replaced.
The rubber used at knockhill is not normally the area you use on the road:D:D
Tread goosed on both edges of the tyres now:)

Aye Chiz, but I am not meaning when will the tread be worn, more to Hill100's point I am meaning when will they be sha99ed through heat cycles so there is nae grip left... If I was on the 748 with Pilot Powers then I would be changing after 3 full track days but my question is really about the Supercorsa's/848 combo which is unknown territory for me; will they last the same or do they give mega grip with higher rate of deterioration? I think I will just book Knockhill on the 29th and get Euan (Scorpion) on standby just in case..

unless its a corser 3 or a supercorsa then ull find running pirellis at knockhill dreadful!
dunlop d211's ntech are the tyre oc choice at the mo for most of the racers...

All depends on how quick you are and how abbrasive the surface is, if you want a tyre that'll work on track and road there isn't one but you can compromise somewhat, the OE tyres will be good enough for all purposes I'm sure and the 2CT does get good write ups (although I didn't get on with them) I believe there's a new Michelin out now which I have heard some good things about.

I would suggest spending money and getting a new set before Cadwell and using them just to have one less thing to worry about and put the original tyres back on if they last at Knockhill.

As for NTEC's I've been using the slicks for over a year on the race bike and wouldn't use anything else but a) they're not cheap b) only last 3 hours in an endurance race but you'd get 2-3 trackdays out of them

The Corsa's on the 848 are fine. Its not as though you are going to become NITRO NORI on the track & break all lap times (ARE YOU:dunno:). If the 848 is your pride & joy then there will be some sort of caution in dropping the bike into corners.
Well for the 1st 4 laps anyway till the tyres warm up :D:D
Ive just stuck the same corsas back on the 848 & I am happy with the grip at knockhill with them.

I will be taking it easy, but don't know if I want to go THAT slowly :D

Ive just booked in the last few minutes the DG tracknight on the 28th & the ERS tracknight for July 21st.

Youve now got me thinking & away to look at my front Corsa.

Youve put doubt:rolleyes::rolleyes: in my wee heed & may slip a new corsa on the front.

Euan may be getting some business in the next week ;):D
STOP PRESS:-
New front Supercorsa ordered. the front would have lasted one more track night but better to have more grip than not enough :). Fitted next week by Euan.
Tracknight the 28th Whoop Whoop Whoop.

i did 1 trackday last year on the oe corsa's have to say thought the grip was exelent dont think any of us will have an issue there.since then ive changed the rear as it was goosed at 3500 miles same front still on 2 track days booked 1 june 1 july doing both before i changed the front .

how fast you are on a trackday, is usualy measured by who else is on the track, you may be in the top 10 one day and the bottom 3 the next. to put the odds in your favour of keeping it rubber side up, if its pirellis, super corsa pro SC1 front SC2 rear, Metzler racetec (same compound) Dunlop 209GPRACER (My favourite at the moment) Medium rear , soft front. Michelin tyre is the power one which is run at very low pressures (rear as low as 17lb) this is acheived by a very hard wall carcase, and unless you have a suspension guru with you, as they need fettled depending on the track layout and temp, i would cross them off the list. All the other tyres that have been mentioned are a compromise between longevity and grip. Grip is best

That is so true! I hadn't really thought of it like that, but spot on. Also usually depends how work has been, how well I've slept, what eaten and how hydrated. All being good I am usually about mid pack in the Inters :o

Cheers for the tips on the tyres!!

Im running two sets of tires corsa III's for touring about and super corsa pro's for my trackdays this year ive got the super corsa's on just now and they are wearing fairley ok for how fast im going.

hello to you all

fwiw,

I find the hill quite hard on rear tyres, I think this is generally because its such a stop and go circuit the rear tyres do spend a lot of time under high throttle load accelerating from (relatively) low speeds.

In comparison to East Fortune for example where corner speeds are a little bit higher I can tell instantly from the tyre wear which rear has been on which track.

I tend to run my new tyres at EF then use part worns at KHill as its more cost effective for me to do it this way. I'll take EF tyres of a heat cycle early and replace them so I can save the tyre for the hill.
