The English - WTF is going on

Two threads have been started on here these last few days and almost exclusively the responses are from north of the border. My rideout in July, the Yorkshire Ripper, and the Favourite Local Run thread.

I mean c'mon, both invite and need contributions from you lot down here. The ex-pats in Jockland say more than us so called Northerners. Even those who have been ejected from DuN (or choose not to post anymore) are actually responding to my ride......(in private it has to be said)..... ffffffffuuuuu$$$$$kking WAKE UP ENGLAND!

I,ve replied Pete....But then again half my family are Scottish

And Davie ......GOLF.get real man. i,d rather have a bottle shoved up my arse & then smashed

I'll not bite to the comments on who's stopped posting , their choice but if they still use DUN it does have a value.

What i would say on events is that people only take part in things they enjoy, if i wasn't getting a response I'd probaly look at what i was providing rather than berating folk and possibly accept that there may be a limited number of people who share the same idea.combine that with the type of event, if it involves a big day out not many want to commit until the day as riding in the p1ssing rain ain't much fun and you won't get a big reaction before hand but might on the day.

It does seem weird when events like Mad March were so well attended but they are only a ride to a venue, no ego's or risk of getting left behind and a chance to craic and meet your mates so maybe thats what the majority want??

On the subject of why folk don't do rides- personally I wouldn't consider a big rideout with a group, made that decision a couple of years ago whilst on a group ride so that rules me out from any event where there isn't a pre defined meet I can enjoy the roads getting to, put that in like David did on the borders blast and me, Linzi, my mate Robin and others made our way to Kiedler to meet so the event is better attended.

horses for courses, we all want different things from life which is what makes it fun so we need events like you are doing Pete just don't expect a huge commitment in advance or be dissapointed if only a couple turn up, provided whoever does had a good time its been worthwhile.....

TBH I have no problem with folk not riding, hey each to his own, I get out anyway, just sometimes it's good to share. It's the general lack of input to the forum (like the favourite ride thingy) that bugs me. It is now more of a Scottish Ducati Club with the rest tagging along.

Tell me about it Pete, I ride all year round and try and post about my rides in winter to encourage others to give it a go.

TBH its thanks to the SDC that this forum even exists, I'd made a decision to stop it last year but Scott talked me out of it as he felt it benefitted the club, as I was partly responsible for pushing Scott and David to start an official club I felt I had to keep it going for them!

It is noticeable that the SDC now help and promote DUN and their members contribute, I no longer have the time I did when I set this up to push it south of the border, Ian (Dseered) was also one of the people who really did encourage others to join (along with many others). TBH up here in Cumbria and probably the north east as well its no problem if it is a more Scottish biased club its easy to meet up in the Borders. At the same time events like Mad March are a nice ride distance away for many of the Yorks Lancs Mancs hence why a lunch meet type event tends to work here.

I'm not that bothered whether folk contribute on the forum (although it would be nice to have more input), cos I know every time we run a meet type event I'll see a few who are members, never posted but turn up to see if its what they want, it was the same at the last Whoop Hall evening meet.

If folk stop organising, turning up or contributing then there is a problem but at the moment I don't see that happening....

There is more input from the SDC as we are normally abusing one another on this site & we are all "GOBBY Bu...ers":D:D;);)

Like M.D's comment though. "Keep up":laugh::laugh:

Rather that than hit a tiny ball with a stick ...That takes all day. whilst wearing clothes mi grandad would turn up his nose at...

I also think that many people like to ride alone, under the radar so to speak, massive increase in first light Jap 4's past my house at weekends, I know my mates tend to go for mid week blats now rather than weekend Police Roadblocks at 1pm.

Times are a changing !

we were also part of the initial set up of Up-north and feel proud to have been part of that.

For us, we are at the southernmost part of the area and very rarely get time to get on rides or meets as we are always busy with other stuff. I also am not keen on group rides and we tend to just enjoy meeting up if we do go out rather than having aplanned route etc.

I still read the forum as much as possible and do post at times but don't have a lot to contribute that people are interested in. I post p about my track activities but most folks are not into that so rather than boring folks i leave that to forums where i know others share that passion.

Pete,

I generally prefer to ride alone...something to do with the way I ride a bike you see :-)

But I do like to attend meets when I can - I'm a bit busy atm.

Thinking back to the time when DUN began, there was a sort of "let's show those Suvveners the best place to own a Ducati is Up North" attitude. Mission easily accomplished :D !. When we had Raid the Lakes and the Midgie Masher that meant we could boast two biggish weekend Ducati meets a year in the North, and I always thought another one on the E side (Yorks or NE) would make a nice addition to the calendar and could attract participants from all of the Up North area, so I can see where Pete is coming from. It's a shame the Lakes event has gone as it now looks like there's a disproportionate amount of activity N of the Border, when in fact there are lots of great biking roads in the N of England. We need one annual N of England Ducati weekend meet in the same way as we have the SDC Midgie Masher Flypast in Scotland ?. If there was an affiliated club (N of England Ducati Club ?) that could be its main showcase event of the year - and surely there would be enough will and determination to plan it. As we have found with the Masher, you have to plant the seed of an idea and evolve it into what attracts people. It can be frustrating for sure at first when it seems nobody is interested (on the first Masher we had 6 ) but persistence with a good idea eventually pays off. Get it in the calendar early in the year, minimise the organisational/cost input and make them dann saff envious at what the're missing out on !.

Here endeth...

From one who lives right 'dahn sarf', I avidly read the threads about meets & rideouts.
We've attended one event by car (winter warmer dinner a long time ago) and one day when we have more disposable time we'd love to come up to a meet with the bikes - not to take part in a rideout as we prefer to not ride in a big group these days - but to come & see the roads you lot keep writing about & also you wonderful people (even if some of you do speak funny! :D )

C, 31 mins direct train ride to Olde Lunnon Town.

Build it, and they will come.:)

Thats probably the best you can hope for really, it can be a fairly thankless task but all you can do is announce a run or meet and see who arrives. I only get a to a few runs these days but that doesn't mean I'm not interested in them.
The more people who join the site the more who'll decide to turn out for the day, persevere.

One event that I went to with my neighbour (Ed) was the BSB at Knockhill in 2007 (I think) - ok it was Ducati Glasgow, but I met alot of DuN members and really enjoyed it - even if I was on a 850 Le Mans!!
We also had a great weekend at Ed's (Projectimola004) last June - can't remember what it was called but even though only Borderduc an Scotch came up it was alot of fun.

Each to there own i suppose.

Although looking at some posts, 'some' people could do with some sales training techniques....................

Without dredging too much up it was a shame about Raid the Lakes and indeed the Dalesman Dash, we were starting to get a nice little calendar of events together. Mine were on the calendar as you say, but it was geting depressing with the lack of support - bit like supporting a fourth division football club, you can only be enthusiastic in your commitment for so long.

I would have been on the first Masher had I been riding Ducati at the time. Was it number two event when I first showed up? The one when we started from the Perth Services? Good old days.

Hello!

I suppose for me, being on DuN and Ducatisti, joining in on a Northern Ride involves probably an hours ride before I even get to the meeting point.

I don't mind doing that (weather dependent of course), as the guys I've met from here have been "sooper and great fun" and I've always felt really looked after being the only girlie on these rides out.

They've been well organised (we'll ignore when Douglas and I went a different way) at a good pace and I've really enjoyed them, so I look forward to catching up with you all again soon - oh - and the Masher :D

English Ducati Girl

Indeed it was. The 2005 Masher, about 40 bikes for the day run. Sunny and dry first half (Gleneagles, Sma Glen, Blairgowrie, Lecht) until the Aviemore lunch stop, then Cyclone Hamish :rain: for the run back down the Laggan and Glencoe !. I think you and I might have been the only ones to do the full 350 miles due to abandonments, although I didn't stop at the finish but just carried on home to get dried out.

Roll on Masher no. 6 in August..

I think that was the one me and Robin rode up to and met you in the monsoon at the weird cafe in Ballachuilish? We managed almost 480 miles that day, plenty of time for stops and coffee but f'ckin freezin on way home, i had to stop at Hamilton services and stuff newspapers wrapped in poly bags in front of me jacket. got to the border and it turned from rain to sun

I visit the site most days and comment or post when i have something to input, rather than posting for the sake of it.I work a stupid shift pattern that involves every other weekend so i have a 50-50 chance of making a ride out on a weekend.

I would love a Northern meet once a year, this i could book time off for.Raid the lakes was the best meet i have ever done, shame it is no more.

I would love to do a weekend of the Scotish roads, due to my knackered elbow and shoulder i would have to trailer my bike to the meeting place and then do the ride out, hopefully next year.

Just because we don't post or attend the rideouts doesn't mean we don't care!!

The slither of England between "darn sarf" (nottingham south) and Scotland has always been a lonely furrow. It's the result of not being Chas and Dave/knees up Mother Brown pearly kings and queens (aka southern tossers) nor brave enough to wear rough woollen skirts with no undercrackers and shout "Freedom!".

Perhaps we need a Ducati Up North inbetween club. Suggestions for the logo? The Brown Ale logo? 8 Ace? LCL?
