Tank range

That implies that your bike is only managing around 35mpg at best.
Now I realise that you don't buy an 848 nor a 1098 for economy but that really is pretty poor. How much of that fuel goes straight down the exhaust?
Have you noticed that there are a lot bikes that when you are riding behind them you can smell the unburnt fuel?

10 to ten am (cowboy time) & I am away up the Tayside Grand Prix route. Dundee Kirrimuir.Aberfeldy,Sma glen, Crief (LUNCH) FUEL. & then home via any twisty road I can think of.
Will phone you at Blairgowrie about 14.00 to pick me up Derek.:D :D
Tank MT at the moment so I will set everything to zero & see when the red light comes on.
Tyres worn in & got miles on the clock so Its getting lalldy up the Sma glen.
.;) ;) ;)
If Tayside police are reading this thread then, sorry I am in a hurry to get back to my Polish illegal imigrant wife who is having Gary Glitters love child. THAT IS THE REASON FOR MY EXCESSIVE SPEED.;) ;)

it's OK guys I've got it sorted, I'm converting the bikes to a nuclear power source (amazing what you can get on e.bay) - tell you what though, I pity the poor b@astard that runs into me :D :D :D

Now it's all you lots fault but I was curious, so I did the sad thing last night ..... The ''I want petrol, NOW' light came on me 900SS after 92 miles of fairly hefty throttle twisting (first tank after bedding in new rings & hi comps) ... so rode the 12 miles home, and drained the tank to see what's in when light comes on .... answer - 4.2 litres ! Put that back in and off to local garage (less than a mile so not adding that on) for fuel - got 12.1 litres in with bike on sidestand (which it was last tiime I filled up), which isn't far off the 17l capacity the manual states - so that's 12.1 to do 104 miles at 'brisk' pace around town and fast dual carriageways .... approx 40mpg when it's being caned aint bad for an old carb'd thing..... I'm sure some real saddos could coax 50+ out of it on a motorway cruise at 60 mph ..... but not my idea of 'why I own a Duc....'

now, don't ask me to do that again- I don't care what it does as long as it's fun doing it :lol2:

Ran out of petrol some years ago on my Monster 1000. Moved the bike from side to side etc could hear nothing from the tank.Anyway pushed her some three miles to a petrol station and filled up. Keeping the bike upright I could only squeeze 12.2 litres into the tank. This confused me as it's supposed to hold 15 litres ? Question: Tesco are giving away free petrol . They've given me 15 litres and only charged for 12.2 - I don't think so.
The following day I phone ducati UK to query the 12.2 litres with a 15 litre tank. They inform me this volume excludes the pump, filter and apparently there's about 1litre you can't get access to because of the location of the pump. Don't know if that's total crap but I've always ment to drain the tank and check again but never got round to it and as yet never ran out of petrol again.

Geoff

That's interesting, I've never managed anywhere near that on my Hyper, 60 miles at best, more like 50-55... I just wonder HOW MUCH fuel is actually left after the light is on...

fill it up and a receptacle of fuel to carry with you and ride it until it runs out, the only way you will find out, for sure!

Interesting one Geoff. I'd heard this before about the tank capacity excluding the pump and filter which seems a bit weird. But even then the pump and filter don't use up as much capacity as you might think because they are full of fuel. I couldn't see them accounting for more than 0.8 litres of your missing 2.8L but where did the other 2.0L go? You would certainly have heard that sloshing about in the tank.

Just fit one of these bad boys and no more worries  This is of course the DP version at twice the price of the normal one.

Just back from blasting through the Sma Glen,Crieff & then Blairgowrie. Fuel light came on at 92 miles & spluttered to a halt at the Shell garage in Cupar Angus after 15 miles on reserve.

Daft Bugger! :p:D or maybe Lucky Bugger :D So now you know ;):D
So that was 107 miles on about 15 litres. That's 7.133 litres/mile or 32 .45 mpg so it looks like about 80 miles is generally going to be fill up time for you. I'd be wondering where all that petrol is going. It's certainly not all producing horsepower.

I had a Darmah in the 80's which was rated at 64 BHP & if memory serves it gave mid-40's mpg.
It's decendent in my 1000SS gives just under 50mpg. :D (& that was on the Glencoe run late July led by MD)

Filling-up so often with the bike is a pain in the arse, so I usually brim it, which entails shaking it from side-to-side loads of times as the fuel doesn't easily displace the air out. Most awkward to fill bike I've had.

anorak fuel

I always @@@@ off my rice burner mates when i keep whining about where are the petrol stations on any given run and "i cannae get to fort bill withoot a fuel stop someplace".

The usual advice of bungee on a couple of litres , run it to empty and check the mileage from a tank never appeals to me.

can we not get a definitive from mr ducati for each model on tank

design capacity
and
capacity actually available to fill
--when on the side stand and when held upright, both on a level surface ??>

Surely that's not too much to ask.

How many miles you then get from a tank compared to this/ how brave on running to your own calculated max distance to fuel is then solely down to riding style or poor fueling set up.

p.s.
for the first time ever i got 103 miles to the fuel light, last w'end on the way back from inveraray ;--it's usually 90/95miles -- must be good fuel in the esso/tesco in inveraray !!
