Single tyre manufacturer in Moto GP ??

After the riders meeting with Dorna this weekend it looks like the following proposals have been made to even out the differences caused by tyres and try and slow the bikes down

taken from mototgpmatters

The riders had 5 proposals to improve safety:

1. The adoption of a single tire manufacturer;
2. A directer connection between the throttle and the rider's wrist, so that the riders not left at the mercy of the electronics quite so much;
3. Narrower wheels and tires, to reduce grip levels and force riders to go more slowly;
4. A return to the 990cc formula, with a top speed limit enforced by electronics, or else;
5. Adding more weight to the 800cc bikes, to make them less agile.

The most interesting part of the single tire rule was that all of the Michelin riders were in favor of the proposal, but accepted by only a majority of the Bridgestone riders. A single tire rule would be the easiest proposal to implement, closely followed by narrower tires and wheels. With proposals on tires being mooted at almost every race, a single tire rule is looking almost inevitable.

so more cubes = slower bike??

I heard on the tv that Pedrosas tyre guru (Michelin) was saying that it was unsafe to race as the front was only lasting 5 laps! :eek:

The commentator said swiftly, it was really his team wanting to say publicly/poltically that they wanted to run with Bridgestones. Yep, I can see a 1 tyre rule coming.

you're right there old bean - just worked my way through the ONE bottle of Rioja. At the moment (don't tell the laydeez) - I'm anybody's! :D :beer: :puke:

cartel, monopoly, price fixing, single tyre manufacturer, yep all sounds about the same :D :D :D I see things in a simplistic view, let them use what they want and may the best team / man win !!!;)

Hmmmm, variety is the spice of life....if you're going to have a single tyre rule, why not go the whole hog and have a single manufacturer rule, and then f*ck it, let's not have them all on the track at once (too dangerous) let's send them out to do the whole race one at a time and see who's fastest, in fact s*d it, then you could do away with different riders, and just use one! There...job done, level playing field...sorry rant over:o :o :o ...have I missed something?

Could take away all the corners too :p

OH, and to get back on topic... Scott was doing a lot of single tyre work at the weekend... but not sure that's what they meant by "single tyre regulations" :laugh: :laugh:

I'll bet good money its Bridgestone ;)

They already have F1 sewn up so have the experience of being a series manufacturer :ohwell:

Single Tyre Rule

'Tis bollocks imho. :mad:

Michelin dominated for years and now since Bridgestone have come along beat them they're throwing their toys out the pram.

Add to this, Pedrosa has won at Jerez and Catalyuna this year and has in the main been at the sharp end...he's currently only 15 points behind Stoner. Michelin need to pull their finger out and make some decent tyres.

Dorna had to lean on Bridgestone to supply Rossi this year as they claimed that they didn't have the capacity to supply more riders than they did in 2007. If that claim is true they won't be the single supplier...

Don't the 250s corner faster than the big bikes anyway? No calls to slow them down.

Personally I don't see how you can make racing much safer. Craig Jones's death at Brands happened because he crashed in a corner on a production bike with 130hp and control tyres...

The major problem can be linked back to the big four Japanese manufacturers and the tyres they fit when the bikes are built

At the moment Michelin do have OEM fitment on a reducing number of Japanese models but SP Tyres (Japanese Dunlop) and Bridgestone want the lot. They have no reason to help Michelin and it is road bike fitments that pay for race development/support.

The Japanese tyre maufacturers will squeeze the life out of Michelin to the point they become irrelevent in the market and then they will be taken over for a pittance. As type approval throughout the world strangles the life out of the after-sales replacement market this will happen.

Pirelli/Metzeler and Michelin do have OEM fitment on many European built models but P/M's dominance in WSB/WSS and BSB/BSS; the biggest domestic championships in Europe, will also see Michelin further marginalised and if you can't sell tyres you haven't got the finance to invest in research and cutting edge development for racing.

it's conceivable that I'm talking p1sh here, it has happened before :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: But, is the WHOLE POINT of competitive motor sport not to get the BEST vehicle (2 wheels or 4), with the BEST engine, with the BEST tyres and the BEST rider - driver, ride/drive as fast as you physically can and WIN based on skill and merit.

By "controlling" the tyres do we really want a level playing field ??? Critics of F1 and Moto GP are already stating it's stale and indeed at times BORING.

I honestly don't know if one tyre manufacturer is good or bad for motorsport.

It's BAD for the buying public, that's a fact. With only Bridgestone making tyres for that greedy b@stard of a Desmosedici it's costing me a FORTUNE as back tyre number FOUR goes on this weekend. Not even enough tread left to get me to Knockhill, let alone a lap or two.

:eek: Spend less time going in a straight line and try it on some twisty stuff???:rofl: :rofl:

:D Only joking, just dead jealous of the garage full of lovely you've got really!

Stuart....I think you actually answered your own question....

ANY monopoly in sport is BAD

The 'Glasgow' monopoly is bad for Scottish football

Tigger' in golf (VERY BAD)

Ferrari's monopoly of F1 with Shuy' was bad for F1; as is the one tyre rule they've got now.

The control tyre rule in BSB/BSS is bad (Michelin used BSB for development)

It can also be argued that Ducati's monopoly (perceived or actual)
is bad for WSB

....but with the Italian domination of the rule making processes within WSB and MotoGP what else can we expect ?

Pirelli control tyres in MotoGP :dunno: Christ I hope not !!!

If there is only one manufacturer in MotoGp then the others wouldn't have to improve their product or need to keep pace, so to speak, bad idea:confused:

Stuart....I think you actually answered your own question....

indeed, but only becuase I'm not sure, would a level playing field be better and rely on rider/driver skill ???? Would using "anything" then mean that teams with deep pockets sweep up - who knows, in general I totally agree, a monopoly in any sport is BAD

A class like Moto GP should not go 1 tyre maker, its a development class and as such tyres form part of that development. WSB/BSB type racing is unimportant, its just marketing led and results tend to be dictated by who has budget to throw at it or influences the race promoter so levelling the playing field a bit isn't an issue and probably gives better racing for the fans.

Its already being reported that Honda will switch to Bridgestone next season, Pedrosa wants to move and the head of HRC has backed the move, that may leave Michelin more money to be more focused and fight back, Bridgestone started off in Moto GP exactly like that, working with less teams but better development. Removal of the tyre limit rule would help, Michelins problems seem to be linked to picking the wrong tyres on the Thursday and maybe its time to get rid of that?

but michellin have be in the sport for ages and have thrown more money for research and developement than any other manufacturer ...and they realy shouldnt be making mistakes like supplying the wrong tyres!!

and lets face it ...its not the first time they`ve done that ....remember the us grand prix ?

rumours are now that Pedrosa will switch to Bridgestone after Misano!! Hayden will stick with Michelin but I think thats a sign that the Ducati deal is done, expectations are of an annuncement in the next few days....

I've never known a team swap tyres mid season and given that Pedrosa has won GP's its hard to understand how he thinks he'll get straight up to speed on them, or maybe its just a few extra races preperation for next season....

Announcement confirming that due at 4:30.

Pedrosa will run Bridgestones at Indianapolis according to Randy Mamola. :eek:
