Self Service

I called into my local B&Q yesterday, in Stockport to find that since my last visit they have gone totally self-service.
I was buying a gas refill for my blowlamp & it took me twice as long to pay as it would have done had there been a real person there to take my money !
Obviously now there's no way to pay at B&Q with cash anymore.

I knew this would happen one day, but figured Tesco or the like would be the first to go down this route.

I remember having a discussion with an old boy on a check-out till at the Bishops Stortford branch of Tesco not so long ago, who suggested that I use the self-service tills rather than queue up at his check-out. I said I was safeguarding jobs by queuing, but he said they would never do away with manned tills.
Looks like he had better be worried about his job sooner than he thought.

The implications of shops going down this route now are far reaching & none of it will benefit us, the customer !

Our local B&Q was nearly all self service at my last visit but still had 2 tills that could be staffed for people paying cash.
I try to avoid places that no longer allow cash, not always possible I know but if we stop being able to use cash we will soon enough regret it.

the cafe in the high street (Boston Tea Party) now makes you

1. Go to a table
2. Download an app
3. Place your order on the app
4. Pay on the app

that process alone takes 4 times longer than ordering at the counter or the waiter coming to the table.

If there are 6 of you then what a clusterfuck

at some point thereafter a 12 year old comes to the table with your order - or 6 orders at varying times

Now what happens if you don't like what you have ordered or have a complaint - bit late to be able to knock something of the bill

Oh and to cap in all they ask if you want to leave a tip when you make the payment - who the fuck am i tipping, myself?

Cashless = control, nothing more.

Cash has been ok for centuries. As soon as the infrastructure is there for them to go cashless, they're going for it.

It's up to us to stop them, only way to do that is keep using cash.

We will sacrifice certain things with totally electronic, but just think of how much longer that backs and knees will survive without
having to carry bags of sand and donkeys etc

They won't - it's exercise. A couple of monkeys in each pocket keeps you fit.

Interesting!

My iPhone 4 is so old it doesn't accept new apps. My wife doesn't have / has never had a mobile. So we're snookered.
Isn't there / wasn't there some legislation which said you couldn't refuse to take cask??? @West Cork Paul ?

In conversations elsewhere, I have seen it established that no one has to accept cash in exchange for goods or services although it must be accepted when offered in settlement of a debt.

WCP will always accept cash though, nudge nudge wink wink.

there is a counter you can go to but they ask you not to if you can help it (and i don't want to sound disrespectable, but here I go) the woman at the counter has a monkey beard like growth on her face

Cash is a pita. No one wants it, even the bank. They limit how much I can pay in in one transaction. WTF. Luckily I have outlets for cash in brown envelopes otherwise the mattress would be really lumpy.

I like paying with my phone it makes me feel down with the kids.

I got coffee through a Starbucks drive through one day and found out their card machine was down. They could only accept cash. That explained the fast service I got for my order as everyone else was driving through without ordering.
I always pay cash at the drive throughs. Sometimes they poke the card machine out their window when I pull up and are startled to see me handing them cash.
