Re-Build Update

Niall, been watching this silently over the last while - looks very nice mate. If I might make one suggestion though - fit a larger oil cooler, with the tuning you have done to the engine it will cry out for one, if not -from my experience last year - it will drink as much oil as it will fuel. :)

i think the shock would look good in black :)

Ian I was actually considering that late last night. I'll take it off today and make a last minute decision...they're usually the right ones :) Then again, part of me does love the 'iconic' yellow spring, even when its not necessarily in keeping with the rest of the design

Edward if I'd wanted bloody huge slabs of metal destroying my beautiful air cooled lines, I would have bought an S4RS :p I'd rather take my chances by keeping her filled up with oil than stick a bigger oil cooler on there.

You really think it's going to be a problem?

Niall, you should be ok if you not going to spend 2 hours at 7500 rpm like I do at Knockhill, or go and like down in the south of England!

What I would say though is - heat saps power - lots of it! if you doubled it's capacity, you would effectively double its cooling ability.
I know what you mean about aesthetics, I have mounted mine as high as I can to hide it. Sits right under the bottom yoke know. :)

When I had the 900ss the oil temperature seldom went much past 100C. Although on a good thrash on a hot day it would occasionally see 120C. The hottest I remember seeing was about 125C - 130C when I did a track day.
Mind you it only had race cans, an open airbox and a jet kit. No FCRs.
For road use you should be fine.

Hmmm...my dream is to find a good, affordable 748 for the track this year. If I can't find one then I'll be using the Monster  Mind you it'll be my first year at this so I wouldn't think the bike will be under too much pressure :o :D

Derek, that's because you live in Forfar!!! ;) :p
With the massive temperatures of southern England they really suffer. I never thought that I would have heat problems in Scotland until last summer. A mate of mine used to race a 900SL in the late nineties, his motor made around 100hp and had two giant custom made oil-coolers fitted (this was a faired bike) which just about managed ot contain the heat produced from all those horses. I know that Niall's motor has (or will have) a simular level of tune to the Imola, at high revs & temperatures the cylinders just grow to the point of losing piston ring tension - result power loss & oil consumption.

I'm sure Niall will be ok - :)

wot colour did you go with for the spring niall ?

/ian

Well...as far as I can see there are two choices, red or black. In theory one of these two should work, but after trying them both out in Photoshop I'm not actually convinced they do. I certainly don't think they look any better than the yellow. Like I say there's something about the famous yellow spring I like, even when it potentially compromises the overall unity of the bike's colour scheme. It has an ecclectic quality to it

Plus...the yellow rubber damper and the inner gold cylinder's 10 year old shabbiness would really shine through if the spring was anything but yellow. At the moment they kind of fade nicely into the background.

I want to upgrade the shock to a fully adjustable at some point anyway, so I'm just going to leave it yellow for now.

cool m8, i would leave it yellow as well, although a black shock makes for good cleaning :)

Easy to keep clean.

im forever trying to get in at my shock with a toothbrush, even with a Hugger.

'ere, Eonan - there's a 748 over on DSC at the moment going for about 2.5k. Any use? Go on you know you want to........:D

cool, that shouldnt take too much to fix up, as long as the frames straight & the engine is fine then your laughing.

Eh? No! Stop it. I'm not buying anything. She'd kill me. Still it'd only take a couple of sponsors.....

She's all wrapped up now, ready for the fight with the loom. I'm going to do a bit of research first though...see if I can get rid of some of that crap, simplify it a bit. If anyone has had any experience of minimising the loom I'd love to hear it

Niall, I didn't change much about my loom (simular to yours). I spent a while though hiding it and tidying it up. :)

...by the way; where is that you're building the thing? is it your conservatory?:)
