Project Zane 668

This is my wee Zane Laverda project, she has clutch/gearbox issues but on the whole reasonably good condition, the fairings are a bit scabby on closer inspection mind you.

another one for the history books colin?

fix and sell ?

I am sure you want to open your own shop and start wheeler dealering

does look nice though and in teh right colour

Nice Colin, I had one just like that when they were launched, traded a 650 Sport kevlar for it :) Superb handling bike, a bit like riding an Aprilia RS250 but more juddery :)

The gear/clutch problem is the clutch aint dis-engaging...sitting on the paddock stands, put it in gear(engine not running)pull the clutch lever and its still in gear.
Not what i was initially told before bidding on it,I was told it was sticking in gear which led me down the path of a broken/weak gear shift return spring that commonly fails but i dont think its that.
Although the selector arm is a bit sloppy,it still gets gears, dont know if the wee spring on that is a bit weak, although that in itself will have jack to do with the clutch not working.
I have done the usual stuff, bled the system, checked the pushrod from the slave to pressure plate, same idea as a ducati but two rods with a ball bearing in the middle.I've checked the plates, springs etc,all looks fine.
I fear something more sinister :watchout:

Nice Laverda Colin.......has the SS gone elsewhere now?

Your puting me to shame...I hav'nt even started on project Tuareg yet!..:comp2:

got a complete new clutch, basket, drum, plates pressure plate fitted and some recommended Rock oil in and got her fired up this morning for the first time(had to jump her),sounds very smooth no vibes, rattles etc.
She's still up on the lift,I tried the gears/clutch but still no clutch disengagement thus far, clicks into 1st 2nd 3rd with the clutch pulled,no crunching so i must have some sort of clutch, just no true neutral/clutch disengagement.
I read once warmed up it'll work right ...I'll get her off the lift tomorrow and try her for real (work gets in the way)...I'll end up embeded into the side of a neebs car nae doubt or in a heep when i huv to hit the kill switch cos i cant get her out of gear :p

What a difference a split new 19ah battery makes, and wait for it...up and down the drive...I have a clutch and gears .
Think it needs a new reg/rec 13.20 at rest-12.80 ign on,high 14v/well into 15v with revs.

Kinda at a cross roads with it,sort the basics out and punt it or go the whole hog and get it on the road and run it,I know they are very fragile
I fancy another Supersport tbh, which isn't helping my mind set !

Fantastic news that it's up and running

Charging doesn't sound too far off. Never seen 15V, but 14.5 - 14.8V is pretty typical. Derek wil be along soon..

With over 15V it will be boiling the battery and blowing bulbs!

ta,I have a rr51 laying from my 916,its the same unit as the lav uses...fffffffflippin electrics

mmmm,bit borderline,
fitted an old rr51 from my old 916(condition unknown) showing 14.30 ish at tickover 14.60 ish 4k revs, rectifier getting pretty hot after 2/3 mins of running ?

Aye it's a 51 I have and maybe need, got my wires crossed(literally!)
The old one I have is from my first Supersport.
I'll redo the joints etc tomorrow, kinda rushed it this morning.

replace as much of the wiring as you can with as few connectors as possible, from what I recall the wiring suffers because of the heat/voltage as do the connectors.

The 668's arent as fragile as the 750's can be, a well sorted one can be quite reliable. if you get stuck talk to Russ Joyner, ex 3X mechanic who does quite a lot of work on them

Replaced the alternator wires today cutting out a couple of joins, now getting a reading of low 14v's at idle(?) and high 14v's with revs, lights on 13.8 ish....

I've got a wee bit enthusiasm back for her now that I'm getting somewhere :o :D

I cant recall them having electrical problems when new so do think the problem is one linked to age of wiring and amount its been cooked, if you can replace as much of the wiring as possible with new, check all earths as well, remove connectors on as much of the wiring as you can and solder in where needed :)

Ive been up and down the street a few times but the bu99er wont rev past 4k,starts fine, idles nicely, revs freely whilst at a stand still but once on the
move wont rev ....just when it was all going so well to

:o basically a duff plug :lol2:,sparking out the head but not in ,stuck another in and bobs yer uncle, raucous little bastid now :flash:

Just to fix up some of the bodywork fasteners then take it for test.
