Pantah petrol filler cap

I'm currently restoring my Pantah and the flip up monza style petrol cap is rusty and needs re-chroming but i'm attempting to strip it and wondering if any of you guys have been there before (Derek ?). Trying not to damage the mechanism and don't want want to breenge in .

Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mine was also rusty relic. I didn't bother trying to get it rechromed, it was cheaper to buy a replacement polished stainless one.
You can get them from Mdinaitalia, locking and non-locking
