Just visiting
I have been 'surfing' the site and can't seem to find much about the old stuff, you know Bevels, singles, mid '90s SS range. I like to chew the fat over subjects like the virtues of the 851kit compared to the 888SP range for example.
Not much talk either about what is arguably one of the most legendary Ducs -the 916 in all it's guises.
Am I an anorak or are there others out there who like to discuss bores and strokes of Ducatis??

I have seen a site in the US (where I was introduced to this site funnily enough) where they have sections for the different ranges.

Interestingly enough they seem to have loads of those 'Sport Classic' things already, are they not selling in this country, or are they others like me who think that Terblanch has lost his way a bit!!! Come back Massimo Tamburini all is forgiven!

...it may not be a Ducati as such but still one of the legendary Ducati designers best & most beautiful bikes ever produced

Edward,
I not sure if there are any DuN members who run a bevel engined Ducati or a single. There are quite a few with mid-90's bikes though. My previous bike was 95 900ss and I've had bevel Ducatis in the past but I doubt if there is enough members at the moment to justify bike specific sections.
It might be something to consider for the technical section as the forum gets bigger and members want to discuss details about particular models.

PJI004,

Theres a few sport classics about here in Yorkshire, two Paul Smarts turn out on ridouts. One of the two owners is working with someone in the US of A on a sport classic club/community.

DUK had some sort of Sport classic MH900e gathering last Sunday, not heard any feedback from that as yet.

Ray.

I'd be happy to discuss the merits (and otherwise) of 888 Sp's till the cows come home.

My SP3 is (even as we speak) at your old mates Baines Racing for a bit of a fettle, mainly in the braking department (currently v. poor). When I dropped it off on Friday John had a marvelous SP5 in the workshop, apparently bought in Austria and largely rebuilt by John recently (don't know who's it is though).

…I like your username, is this why you have most of the SPs that Ducati made??? !! nice collection – all my favourites.
Yes I have seen that Austrian SP5 that the boys have there, it has been there for a while and we reckon it was raced as it has all the race trick bits on it.
What’s the matter with your SP3’s brakes? I know the original Brembo pads were very hard, generally crap and ate the gorgeous full floaters. I always fitted my own set of EBC HH pads whenever my mate John lent me his SP3 for the track. The SPs could also do with the corsa master cylinder though – easy fit, beautifully made but not so easy to pay for!!
I remember when I worked for the boys, we had a very rare beast indeed in the showroom – a 955 SP. Outwardly it looked exactly the same as the 916 SP. It was only when you looked at the engine number that you could see that it was in fact ZDM955…..etc. it was one of the 20 or so homologation specials that they had to produce in order for Foggy and the like to go racing with the larger capacity engine. It also had larger intakes, different chip etc. Back then they were stupid money, I can’t imagine now how much it would be worth. Shame I never got any photos of it.
Say hello to the boys when you go and pick up your SP3. They really are diamond geezers!

ps. this is the little jem that I was able to put through it's paces at Cadwell a few times...How simular was it the race bike heh?

The brakes on the SP3 are just weak. It's getting some steel lines and new pads. The SP4's are fine but it does have the uprated master cylinder (the only non-standard fitment). The SP3 is completely standard in every respect.

Last year Forza had a 955SP for sale at £12k (although obviously I don't know how much it went for). It wasn't the price that put me off so much as the non-standard parts the previous owner had put on it - mag wheels, AP brakes etc etc. All fine and dandy in the right context but if I had a 955 I'd want it to be standard, even down to the old-style 3 spoke wheels. I thought seriously about buying it and recouping some of the outlay from the sale of the bling parts but just didn't.

Yes it's true, I count beans for a living. I'm not proud of it but it may yet buy me a few more SP's (916SP next I hope, or that SP5.......)

I agree with you on the originalilty thing. I hate bling...in fact I hate that word...grumpy old man!!!
The bikes were fantastic as they were, my view is that if you gonna change something especially like that, you paint the carbon bits, add ons etc. so that it looks original and more importantly keep all the original bits.
I like the fact that your bike is so original, Baines and I feel the same about this, the SPs were special bikes by their nature and name, they don't deserve all that crap putting on them!!! You own it to the other bikes to get the remaining SPs, what a collection that would be!
It was always my intention to get the trio of F1 - SP bikes if you will; the Montjuich, Laguna Seca & Santamonica. I only managed the Santamonica - got into Porsches instead - blast. I sold it to a guy in Sweden who now has all three.

... so you work for Heinz then?

I love the old(er) F1's especially the Santa Monica but my real Ducati interest starts with the 4 valve bikes (I'd dearly like an 851 Tricolore but haven't seen one for ages).

I don't have a blanket ban on bling as I've changed many things on the SPS - wheels, brakes etc. - but I do prefer the older bikes to be unmolested.

Unfortunately I don't have unlimited funds (Porsches?? - Parkers guide tells me that my ancient Saab is now worth the princely sum of £500) but what I do have spare goes on the bikes.

I am more of a late '80s early '90 Ducati man. I dearly miss my Santamonica but hindsight is a wonderful thing. I sold it in '99 to buy my first Porsche. I have enjoyed Porsche driving and 4 cars later I have sold my last one to help fund this place. I doubt if I will own one again.
I too love the 851 especially the Kit. Being the first of the generation they had the best bits on them. and that fantastic colour scheme.

Hi guys

With regard to the full-floater brakes on 888SPs: My own SP has weaker brakes than my bog-standard 888Strada - despite it having an up-rated master cylinder.

The bikes are only used on the road though. Maybe the track would tell a different tale..?

...again, brake pad material mate. Cast Iron and steel make a difference. Do both your 888s have the same master cylinder?

So, John (Baines) has put steel lines on the SP3 and some soft pads (Carbon Lorraines I think), tweaked the suspension and adjusted the belts. Now fit to ride, apparently, which means that it'll pi55 down all weekend.

Sorry !

Gordj by his own admission has already put the kybosh on the weather. He put his bike on the road at the beginning of the week and it's been raining ever since :(

Remaining SP's......

Edward, you got me thinking, how many more are there, this is my effort :-

851SP
851SP2
888SP(4)S
888SP5
748SP
748SPS
916SP
955SP
916SPS
916SPS (Foggy Rep)

(Not including the 851SP3, 888SP4 and 996SPS that I already have).

Oh dear, quite a few £'s worth there. Anyone want to buy a kidney?

...Well don't know about the kidney, but I recon you've just about covered them. I can only think of the
851 Strada,
851 Kit,
851 Corsa,
888 Corsa,
926 Corsa,
916 Corsa,
916 Senna.
I have included the 851 Strada and Senna, because they were single seaters (originally) and had decent kit on them (like Pankel rods, Omega pistons etc.)
...Yes I know most of these are race bikes but hey; while you're at it....

And I didn't include the 750 F1 SP bikes which are just as draining on the old wallet....

...your gonna have no organs left mate!!
