No Brake Lights and MOT Tomorrow

Now the novelty is really beginning to wear off :comp2: My MOT runs out on Saturday, so I’ve booked a slot for tomorrow afternoon. As well having to refit all the parts I’ve taken off, I still need to fit the new starter motor…please let that gasket arrive tomorrow morning!

BUT…now I’ve discovered that the brake lights are not working, front and rear. The horn works fine (I think they’re on the same circuit) so…where should I begin to trace the problem? As usual any help you could give me would be great :D

Take it you've checked the bulbs first;) :D
If the main bulbs blown hence nae light.
Check the rear brake switch as well.
Got the same prob with the Monster in Duc Glas and there still waitin on one :(

spray a wee bit w.d. or silicone lubricant into the brake switches it can displace any dampnes that has built up, tho its unlikely to be that. chec k the fuse if its on a different circuit. check connections mate, just the usual stuff

Tam it's an integrated LED tail light, so it uses the same bulbs as the main rear. The main rear is working fine :(

Are MOT testers as easy to bribe as Russian police? ;)

Depends. My brake light bulb went when i was gettin it tested in bishopbriggs tae get it into the country and the bugger made me go tae halfords fur a new one :comp2: :comp2: :D

Yep just read it...are you allowed to drive to an MOT centre without an MOT? If so then I can start drinking and forget about this mess until another day  :D

If you can wait until saturday I'll come along and sort it for you. Guaranteed. No problem.

I would phone him first thing in the morning and unbook it if it's not working or he may charge you next time you go. If the slot is booked for your bike I don't know how much time he has before notifying DVLA your not going. Just a thought!;)

Aw mate...I would eternally grateful...even more grateful than the last time you came along and sorted my bike out for me :D I'm thinking this friendship must seem a little one sided :o

Isn't there 3 wires going to the tail lights, one's an earth another is tail light and finally one from the switches for the brake light, have you checked all three are connected?

Have you got a spare bulb or voltmeter you can check each live connection out with?

Big Thanks to Derek

Huge thank you to Derek for taking the time to come down and help me (again :o ). He found out what the problem was…unfortunately it was actually something to do with the LED circuit board itself.

He reckons it would be easy enough to fix, given the time…but well life’s just too short for that nonsense :p so I’ve ordered a new one from Spareshack Stuart. Cheers Derek

That and a load of corrosion and muck at the tail/stop light terminals.

Erm yeh, thanks for adding that bit mate...I like to think it was an electrical failure completely outwith my control ;)

You could hardly be expected to dismantle the bike to clean every electrical connector. If you use the bike in all weathers and we know you do, it's gonna get dirty. When you put it back together give the terminals a coating of ACF50 or silicon grease. That should keep the weather out and stop future corrosion.

And I just remembered. I left my reel of solder behind. I'll need to get it from you sometime, preferably before you jet off to Kiev again. It's the lead variety and you can't buy it anymore. All you can get now is lead-free and it's crap.

I bought a reel of multicore solder from our local trade Hardware store, red reel with warnings all over it about the dangers of lead which I pulled off and put in the bin and it's fine!;) Lead an all!

The MOT guy is back from his holiday on Monday, so if you can wait until then I'll drop it off. If not, someone is always here if you're passing. I'd post it but it weighs a bloody ton :D
