The national tariff model 's time has ended. People should be free and providers should be able to charge WTF they like. And the Tories who worship at the alter of competition are too scared to do anything about this.
So if the price of natural gas has gone off the scale, then let firms that provide gas charge what they like. This will encourage more people to dump it and this is supposed to be encouraged by all the net zero bollox.
And it will expose the "green" firms, like Ecotricity, to the bollox, that they speak, as they ensure that wind energy is one of the most expensive forms of power, because it helps the hippy Dale Vince to be a multi-billionaire (Yeah, Man!) and not provide affordable power from wind, or solar.
Events have shown that having a national price for a unit of electricity does not provide either proper competition of any inclination to reduce climate change.
Shell mailed me today to tell me they had put my Direct Debit to £284 ! 
I went straight back online and tried to put it back to £200, but £210 was the lowest they would let me go. The account is in credit now and my last bill was £122. If they continue to take the pi$$, I'll cancel the direct debit and just make payments at my leisure.

I can't even see how it can be legal for them to change a DD in my bank. The whole system is a mess.

Other Tariffs are more expensive..
Direct Debit allows them to vary the amount.
Some energy companies are taking the piss, by increasing massively now to build up a balance to draw on in the Winter.
Despite being more than £1000 in credit, EON tripled our Direct Debit.
A phone call was needed to correct the situation, as the website wouldn't allow any reduction... only an increase.
Ah the joys of foreign companies owning your utilitiesOn another matter we are being forced into having a water meter......

When I was in hospital and away for about six months, I got into debt with Octopus of about £2000. They never hassled me and allowed me to sort it out over at least a year.
Lots in my family, encouraged me to leave Octopus as they are not green enough, man. I still have the original meter that does not have the ability to filter out electricity generated from fossil fuels, man.
But I am sticking with Octopus as they never hassled me, after going thousands in debt. That means something to me.

I don’t want a part of the pie, I want to be able to afford to heat my house in the winter and cook food.

Thinking about this a bit more, there is a real gap in the market and good opportunity for a university final year project, if they still do them, rather than spending the final year on extra lessons in not offending women, ethnic minorities, and university hierarchy busy obtaining funding from disreputable sources. Design an intelligent gas meter that stops climate change by allowing nothing thorough, and an electricity meter that prevents the passing of electricity generated by pesky Russians burning coal.

if we see a VAT reduction on gas and a green levy wager I bet that will disappear into profit too just like the fuel did on the forecourts 
I was as thinking of getting one of those stand alone kettles that boils as they poorHad smart meters installed today.
I was playing about with the display knocking stuff on / off to see what the effect was.when I turned the kettle on.
but not researched it yet 
This was after it was installed. With fridges & stuff just on standby, I'm consuming a few pennies per hour. The installer says it connects to my supplier and knows my tariff to work out costs of usage.
It'll be interesting when I start using things like kettles and washing machines.
