Motogiro d'Italia 2008

Desmodromically delirious
Dates now announced for the Motogiro 2008 at........
( http://www.motogiroditalia.com/ ). It doesn't say on the website but I am told it will take place in Sardinia.

If anyone from DUN is tempted to go then I can wholeheartedly recommend it as something to do at least once in your biking career. Although it is primarily for under-200cc vintage bikes you can also go along with a modern bike in the Tourist class and be part of a week-long rolling festival of Italian scenery, sunshine, motorcycles and nostalgia.

Giro

Hi Guys the Giro in 2008 will be out of rome. not sardinia.
the club terni and dream engine have parted Co so there are a few changes.
Chris Busshell on the DSC web site has all the details for any one intrested.
Its a lot of fun and a hectic 5 days you wont be dissapointed.:) :)

Thanks for the update. When I saw the website appear I thought Dream Engine must still be aboard, but there we go......

Rome, eh ?. At least that'll be easier to get to than Sardinia. I'll check with Chris B for details.

I am determined to do this at some point and hopefully not too far in the future. All the reports I read suggest that this is bordering on legalised lunacy of the best kind and must only be a matter of time before the suits close it down. Someone getting badly hurt or worse could be the excuse to stop it.
Ideally I would like to do it when it is based in the North of Italy. The Taglioni class rules changed this year and scuppered my plans for the bike I was planning to use but I do have an alternative or could just do the non-competitive Tourist class.
I would transport or arrange to transport the bike to the start as neither I or the bike could handle riding there, 5 days of flat out riding (and drinking and eating!:D ) and riding home.
Go buy a bevel you guys!

I'm thinking of doing the Turisti class again (which would be my third time). I'd like to get a bit more detail on the route, though, first. As Stuart says, it'd be a nicer prospect up north though the two I did were in central Italy and were fantastic. I doubt if this year's one would spend much time in Rome itself. As you say the traffic is a nightmare.

I'll ask around the Giroisti to see if anyone has info.....

Go buy a bevel you guys!

Must say I do like this little number

giro

Hi guys i have an e mail of the route, but its on my comp at work, but its basicly from rome probably a national park to the north for the start then accross central italy various places, if anyone is intrested i will post the route on here .
there wiull be 2 versions of the giro this year if things go to plan dream engine on the 19 may this will be the usual international event.
and the club ternie are planing one a few weeks later but i dont have details on that.
the DE giro have changed the rules again i now understand that 250s are ok for the taglioni class again. and the price has gone up but this time they have promised 4 star hotels.

Would be interested in seeing the route if poss?
Apologies but who or what is club ternie?
Is this the result of some in-house fighting and if so what is the likely impact on the event.
Interesting the Taglioni class has changed again, I had hoped initially to use the single but the increase in cc limit scuppered that, any idea why the change again?
Sorry for all the questions.:o

giro

hi desmo, the club terni have run the event for around 15 years, they are a bike club based in terni a town in central italy. then dream engine got together with them , who are a part of ducati.
and turned it into an international event.now the club want out. and there may be 2 events. but i think only the dream engine one will have the international riders, the terni club will revert to a local club event as it was in the past.
possible reason for the change back to 250s included was no one was happy about the move in the first place.
I will be in the vintage class it will be my 5 th event just love it, flying through the villages most of the locals cheering you on, :)

Giro

This is an extract from a e mail to me about the giro 2008.
if any one needs more info i will try to help.
:)
We already know that the event will run from the 19th - 24th May, starting and finishing at Fiumicino on the coast west of Rome and a short taxi ride from the international airport.

The 19th will be taken up with registration and scruitineering. Given that it is so close to the airport there is the opportunity to fly out on Monday morning.

The event

Tuesday 20th May

Leg 1 Rome - Pescara

Wednesday 21st May

Leg 2 Pescara - Vieste

Thursday 22nd May

Leg 3 Vieste - Vieste

Friday 23rd May

Leg 4 Vieste - Pescara

Saturday 24th May

Leg 5 Pescara - Rome

We will end with a gala dinner on the Saturday night and fly home on Sunday. It would appear that Vieste is set in a very large national park, with the opportunity in leg 3 to run down the Adriatic coast towards the heel of Italy.

We wont get the detailed route until the new year, but the basic route can already be assessed, with plenty of options for going up into the mountains!

Part of the reason for the increase in costs is that we will be staying in 4 star hotels in 2008.

Touring Super Sport Class

This is a new class for 2008. The entry criteria are for machines of at least 250cc manufactured up until 1968, which gives lots of opportunities for bikes that weren’t eligible previously. This class will do the special tests and be awarded prizes within the class.

Teams

After the success of Peter Reeve and the boys last year might I suggest that people give more thought to entering in the team competition? It is one area in which we should be able to give the Italians a run for their money.

If anyone has any questions please come back to me and I will do my best to field them.

Best regards

Moto Giro 2008

Great news on the above. Its one of those events I must do before I pass on. My other half has a Monster S2R 800 and I have a S4RS Monster. Our plan is to visit the Moto Giro in 2008 see what its like with a view to taking part in 2009. Suzie already has found an ideal mount, a 1962 Moto Morini 175cc Tresetta Sprint. Absolutely gorgeous. We have tracked down the original owner in Italy who can confirm its 16k km's mileage is correct. It goes like stink and leaves my Royal Enfield 350 Bullet for dead. The engine is giving 180psi cyclinder pressure and looks like it has only done the mileage shown. its genuine and unrestored but in lovely condition. It will be the perfect mount for the Giro. I am still looking for something of the period and the engine size. All suggestinos gratefully received.

Cheers Spagforth :lol2:

Website is up and running now.....http://www.motogiroditalia.com/en/

Might be worth having a get-together of people from UpNorth who are seriously thinking about doing this next year ?. It's still a long way away but it's good to start planning early eg whether to send bikes out and back by truck or to ride there and back, etc etc.

If I am reading this correctly the Taglioni class is now over 200cc (not 250)

This will open it up further for more Ducati singles etc.

Are you volunteering to co-ordinate possible interest DB?

I'd be happy to try and co-ordinate things if we've got some serious interest in a DUN trip to the Giro next year. Mostly it's a case of registering and paying individually - that takes care of all the accommodation, etc for the five days of the Giro - but then there's the issue of how to get the bikes to Italy (truck or ride), route to take, how many days, etc. Nothing too difficult.

I know of at least one van probably going from Scotland to Italy with bikes, and Chris Bushell usually organises a big truck leaving from dann saff somewhere. The key decision is whether to truck your bike out and you fly out by Ryanair or to make a tour of it and ride to Italy and back.

Let's see who's seriously interested first, though. Names please, ladies and gentlemen.....................

If only life were simple !. As well as the "official" Motogiro run by Ducati/Dream Engine on May 19-24 next year there is now also the Motogiro Race (not a race but an event run to a similar format as the Motogiro) run by Club Terni (who organised the Motogiro up to thi year's event) on June 2-7. Their website is http://www.motoclub-terni.it but not much of it is in English, so I have sent off for details in English and will put them up here when I get them.

From my discussions it sounds like both events will be quite similar and the situation has arisen from a fall-out of sorts between Club Terni and Ducati. Cost-wise, I don't yet know if there's much in it so we'll see what comes back.

giro

Hi Guys , the truck chris uses is around £250 to ship a bike from sevenoaks
in kent. the main airport in rome is i think formancino to the NW of rome
close to the start point. alitalia is the best price to this airport.
the buget airlines fly into ciampino which is further away.
belive me time will fly so if anyone is serious, GET ON WITH IT!
Spagforth, the settebello is a good choice just check with the organisers
that the year of the bike is OK.
for the vintage class 1957 is the cut off but they do make exceptions.
I have a 175 ducati thats done the giro 3 times without fault. 12v electronic ign Etc well sorted may sell if anyone is intrested.

Clicked on the link and there is an English version there. As I read it after a couple of  :) ,5 day event starting 2nd June with classes of before and after 1969 for bikes. Maximum speed 30mph(  ) and route is there as well.
Also says there is the chance to "assist" at the Moto GP on 1st June. Hold Casey's Bike in the pits maybe? extra 260 euros.
From a quick glance this event looks quite a bit less than previously and has a limit of 200 riders.

giro

Hi the low mph average is to stay inside the law, but on a 50 + year old 175 thats flat out for 5 days !
And the trip to the moto GP is a coach trip as spectators only..

Route seems to be clockwise North of Rome up the West coast across to the East, down the coast and back round to the start.
If ability tests and lunch stops fall within the overall time then you will exceed 30mph I suspect. Your bike must be good for at least 80!;) :)
