Insurance (or lack of it) on your bling/spare parts in garage

As some of you may know we got flooded last November, over 0.5m of water in the garage and even though we managed to get all the bikes and car out and to dry ground we couldn't shift all the parts we had lying around.

I'd think most of us have parts or bling we've swapped off bikes/cars and tuck away in garage to refit if we sell the vehicle or simply as spares. Most of my bike stuff was up on shelves but there was an OEM headunit for the Alfa in a lower cupboard, I'd fitted a new unit, sat nav, bluetooth , ipod etc and stored the old one to put back in should i sell it.

I claimed for it and a cd changer in same cupboard and have now been told the policy does not cover them "motor vehicles and their accessories or equipment whether or not attached to a vehicle" I'd always believed that they were covered if not attached and stored as the contents of your garage so it came as a bit of a surprise. I'm pretty sure the wording has changed over the years as it was an ex staff policy swapped to normal domestic when I left, we kept it running without really checking all the stuff they send you every year :(

On further investigation I now find that its very difficult to actually get these items covered, the motor policy doesn't cover it as they aren't attached, the home contents has the exclusion, effectively it means any bits of bling or spare part are stored at your own risk.

My loss isn't great because it was only lower level flood damage however if garage had been broken into and everything stolen or we had a total loss from fire it would have been a lot different.

I was p1ssed off so started looking at other policies (not that we can shift insurers after 2 huge flood claims) and noticed that some now also add a limit to the contents in your garage or outbuildings.

If you've got a few bits lying around check your policy wording, it does change and as many buy insurance on price it could be you didn't ask about cover for motor parts in the garage or outbuildings when buying the policy.

Yep it's well worth checking your policies as we discovered last year. Despite paying an increased premium to cover certain things we discovered that another section clauses meant that we didn't have the cover we expected. This was a huge shock to us and could have had huge financial issues.

Ooh it does make you emit steam from your ears when you read stuff like that Claire and Michael.

They charge you more for the extra cover but don't then tell you about the clause later in the policy that effectively writes off that extra cover. Why aren't insurance companies governed by the same type of legislation that covers you having to disclose if you've had a disagreement with your neighbous when you sell your house. :banghead: They just make up their (one-sided) rules how the hell they want and seem to be able to get away with it - i.e. NCB on cars/vans not covered on bikes, yet points/convictions are.

I hate to think what AK has tucked in corners in the garage!

On another tack, just checked today with Carole Nash & many (not all!) of the insurance companies now wont cover bikes for theft if they are not MOT'd whilst on a SORN
Apparently they do cover classics etc if on a 'special classic' policy, but not roadbikes etc. I only asked them as has heard rumour mongering on another site (and apoplogies if its been covered here).

AK's bikes are in this group (Equity Red Star via CN, underwritten by Motorama) so he needs to keep the 2nd bike MOT'd at all times it seems - couldn't find anything in the policy documents to tell me otherwise tho & the 'nice lady' on the phone said she had taken several calls of this nature in the past fortnight.
