I Try

Next month, I am staying in a hotel in Worcester for no particular reason. I don't think that I have ever been to Worcester, and if I have, I've forgotten it.

The destination was chosen because I can go there from my local railway station. GWR have recently curtailed many options but Worcester has only been cut back. Now, some trains only go as far as Gloucester, while some expire in Cheltenham, but Worcester is still a destination - sometimes. This does mean a bit of a walk to the hotel from the station carrying my stuff.

But, I have looked into going by car and Google reckons 51 minutes. Given that, as I don't like a panic, I leave for the station about half an hour before train departure time, with the train taking about an hour, plus I have to walk through town with my stuff and that will take me at least 30 mins. So, about two hours in all v 51 minutes and no long walk though Worcester carrying my gear if I drive.

So although the environmental thing is to take the train, I think that I will stuff the environment and drive. The train is a dirty diesal, anyway.

You all needed to know that, I feel.

Although the KTM has panniers and could do it easily, I can't take my walking poles that I will need when I am there, so that rules out taking a bike.

And I think that there is a Ducati Worcester but a bit far for me to walk from the hotel, but If I take the car, then I could visit.

You all needed to know more, so I added some more text for you.

And the same group, Completely Motorbikes, who seem to own loads of the dealers around this part of the World, also have a Kawasaki dealer really close to where I will be staying. Rude not to hae a look as I like Kawasakis!

You could visit the racecourse if you go on a racing day - it's next to the city centre and easily walkable

There are 3 evening meetings in August - 1st, 22nd and 29th

I just did a search, ‘Worcester’ in any thread, posted by PerryL, it would appear you’ve not been to Worcester before just been talking about it for the last 15 months 🤣

Just go man and then tell us all about it 👍

I could do lots.

The hotel was booked ages ago but I never booked train tickets as I have virtually given up with trains due to the strikes. If I was to train it, then I would only bother to buy tickets using the GWR app, standing at the platform knowing the train is definitely on its way. I wouldn't even buy them before leaving home as GWR trains are cancelled for a pastime. Even being physically on the train guarantees nothing. My next station is Gloucester. and it is not unknown for trains meant to be going to Worcester to give up at Gloucester.

GWR is a brilliant example of how to wreck a business. I used to go the other direction to Bath quite a bit, until GWR stopped that nonsense and only go as far as Bristol now. Then you have to find a train going from Bristol Temple Meads ti Bath, that will be on some distant platform, and that's if you are lucky. Now, when I go to the Theatre, I drive to the Lansdown Park & Ride where I can easily park and there has always been a bus waiting to take me down the hill into Bath. And the bus stop is just around the corner from the theatre, whereas the railway station is about 25 minutes walk away.

Going by train is only the environmental thing to do if it is full to capacity and has only ever been run that way since manufacture. I suspect it is diesel electric and only has a few dozen on its 11 carriages.
the most green thing to do is cycle or motorcycle.

I "think" that these things are purely dirty diesel, unlike the shitto Hitachi ones that are always driven by electric motors from electricity taken from either overhead cables or electricity generated onboard. In both cases you have the wonderful choice of electricity generated from diesel on the train, or coal burnt in Poland BUT you have the pleasure of fooling yourself into thinking you are benefitting the environment, while really subsidising French rail travel. It is a wonderful feeling to fool yourself that you are green and GWR reap the rewards from it!
