Hypermotard

looks very good Dave, they look pretty nimble.

he does make it look like a pocket rocket these tho.

The Ducati on the other side of the Multi looks like the Sport1000 with high bars and mirrors as in Monster style or it's a GT with a Sport tank

Yes it could be my next Ducati, I get the feeling that front mudguard won't be a lot of use when it's P*****g it down tho

i think the riding position will be very interesting on this bike, cant wait to have a go !

Is this the bike thats gonna been the Monster replacement or is it another family line?

The Monster has always been a good bike for those who are vertically challenged, this bike looks good for same.

Doubt they'd ever replace the monster Ray, it's Ducati's 911, isn't the monster the bike that saved Ducati?

Yeah, you're right, it's been their top seller for years. One of the head Honchos at Ducati is a big 911 fan, no more revolution just evolution then?

Thought I read somewhere in Ducati's business plan blurb about a Monster replacement in 2008 or such like though?

Ray.

I did read somewhere there is a replacement planned for the Monster but it read like it will be re-design job and will be still called Monster. Let's hope Ducati learned their lesson with the re-design of the 916 line and this time it will be a more attractive Monster

You could argue and I would hope Ducati designers and marketing guys would see that rehashing an old design doesn't mean big sales, does Ducati want to push the envelope (as they did with the 916 and even with the 999) and make new and exciting bikes or bow to the public and simply build what the public wants.

It won't be long until there's an 851/888 classic let alone a 916 classic on the horizon I'm guessing

Then you're into when is a Monster not a Monster.

With the 911 analogy some say the line stopped with the death of the air cooled cars???

Ducati are between a rock and hard place, this time with the Monster????

Keep it simlar or big re design??

Thats why I thought the Hypermotard might be a Monster replacement, Ducati got a very positive response about the design.

Clever stuff, release a design study, it gets very positive response then a few year later bring to market as the new Monster. If the design study gets slated then go back to the drawing board.

If thats the case, then they've learnt the lesson of the re design of the 916 gauge the design acceptance before replacing an icon???

For me the hypermotard has some Monster genes in its design. Time will tell.

I read reviews of the S4Rs and T.W.O. magazine say "next to the FZ1 the Monster shows it's age" as a negative criticism! To Journo's that spend their life looking at and analyzing the latest bikes then something like the Monster might do. I like to think it is classic bike that is wearing the latest in trick parts without spoiling what is a good looking bike. For something that is still similiar to the bike of '94 it is still selling well and it just goes to show that Ducati must be doing something right with it. They should take notice of the owners that buy and love the bikes rather than journos that will be moving on to a new flavour next month

You're probably right Steve, also the monster is a secret seller most of the mags that adorn the shelves are aimed at the sportsbike market thus a high turnover of sportsbikes, whereas the monster as you say keeps getting refined and ends up with a not to dissimilar spec to it's race bred brother but goes somewhat unnoticed maybe that's it's appeal?

Absolutely, It's a classic iconic bike as much as the 916 imo and overshadowed by it's prettier stable mate because it's a sports bike with all the bodywork and gets the attention as you point out. A good rider on a monster will keep up with most sports bikes in the twisties and there seems to be a bigger interest in naked bikes now. The magazines seem to be only interested in the latest plastic rocketship. The kids who buy music are buying more vynl now than they have for years and likewise there is always room for quality classic designs that work well. I think if Ducati did a limited run of the 888, 748 and 998 they wouldn't have any difficulty selling them.

found this on another site. its based on a multistrada I think, front of frame, footpegs , wet clutch and air cooled engine, main changes look like the frame now has a sub frame and the forks have radial brakes. I can't see any parts from a monster in there so it looks like its either a multi derivative and the monster will continue on.

it's certainly got those funny Multistrada mirrors!! :)

Heres the original to compare it with.
The differences as far as I've noticed are:- twin discs, amber lenses on the rear indicators,a catalyst bulge in front of the swingarm, the front indicators dont seem to be on the handguard/mirrors,whether the mirrors are temprorary or not I dont know,I hope they are, the pillion footrests-I really hope these are removable as they're hideous, its the old monster design-a step backwards.
the engine is different inso far as it has the wet clutch, though, at last Ducati has routed both the oil lines up the left side to the cooler leaving the belt covers uncluttered-this is exactly what I want to do to my monster but get nothing but puzzled looks when I ask about it.Whatever the box beneath the seat is they'd better make it black like the prototype and not cheap looking white plastic.
Think I prefer the temproray light to the proposed one.

I still think the beak with its intake slots is a styling exercise too far

if ducati have any sense at all theyll keep the monster running just like yamaha have with the xjr.Yamaha dealers love the xjr cause it just continues to trickle out the door constantly, no hassles,no worries just constantly turns over.Ducati have got that with the monster if they keep it in production.

I agree with you there Gordon, if the Monster sales are at a constant level and they keep the most popular models in the range then they would be crackers to change it or replace it. They have left the badges off (the bike at the filling station) because they don't want people to see that it is a Ducati until it offically launched yet the test riders ar wearing Ducati leathers!
