Why do bike tyres seem to be more suseptible to picking up nails and screws - is it the softer compounds?

I think it's because the tyres like being stuffed with ganja so go looking for the nails and screws

Once you have any wear on the softer tyres they become very suseptible to nails or screws even if not down to the wear marker the tyre carcass just won't hold out anything of a harder nature
