Flying Ducs at Sepang Test

Don't get me wrong, i hope Sete does well but yes, its all about marketing and return on the investment you make in it. You need to sell bikes to pay for race teams and build brand image for future success I'm sorry but Sete don't make me want to buy a bike or even think Ducati have looked at things long term, if they had thy would have gone for Marco and built him into the next Vale. Sete may well win a race this year but so what?? Loris won a few last year.

Oi..............you lot of wonkers!!.........Me and Giz are trying to have a decent conflab aboot Sete and how fab / crap he is and you lot are hijaking this thread!!! Why don't you go and slag me and becks off somewhere else!!!:D ;) :canada: :fou: :finger:

Now where was I .............. Oh bollocks to it! ....... Can't remember !!

Borderduc's right, let's continue this tomorrow!

Still at work and got more to do before hometime!!

Again very valid points mate, selling bikes is what it's all about as you say! That is after all the main reason why they do it!

But just winning or the factory selling bikes doesn't pay for the team.
Marlboro pay in excess of £10 million to Ducati per annum to help pay for the team! That's a stack of cash in anyones book! The coverage they get is fantastic! Maybe not so much in this country (smoking laws etc) but in Europe motorcycle racing in some countries is second, only marginally to football. Its publicity generates fortunes!

Include the other sponsorship deals they have across WSBK, WSS and Gp PLUS Satellite teams paying an annual lease on their bikes and it's a tidy business (Ducati Corse is a seperate leg of DMH). In the same breath though, all the sponsors want their team on the podium at least, but preferrably winning titles.

They know the Gp platform is an excellent vehicle for their companies coverage. If is was only winning that mattered, the small teams would have no sponsors and would most likely struggle to exist. It's a real tightrope between successful results, popularity stakes, media exposure and reasonable investment in potential winning riders.

But winning Gp's automatically creates heros and subsequently automatically sells bikes!
It's really unfortunate (I think) that Marco (for eg) is not on a Duc this year, maybe Duc didn't want him, maybe he didn't want (or even think) about leaving Honda, maybe we'll never know. But I still think Sete has as good (if not better after the final days testing in Sepang) a chance to beat anyone including Rossi as the other top few riders in the series.

Hope Capirossi is right in the thick of it too! Maybe a few 1 2's would be nice eh?

Just my opinion though mate;) :D :canada:

You've probably identified why Sete's at Ducati there Martin, Ducati Corse need money for that team and Sete will bring his personal sponsors, he's also well enough known to drag in the cash for the other parts needed like tyres, suspension etc so it reduces the overall running costs of the team. I've just been in this position where we have sponsored the worlds Number 1 rider for 4 years, unfortunately he decided to go to another team for 06 and all the component suppliers have reduced what they'll give us by substantial amounts. he takes his personal sponsors with him as well so running a team gets a lot harder. As far as Europe goes think you'll find that after football cycling probably has bigger budgets and sponsors :)

I doubt that DC make so much money, a lot will go back into giving the sponsor what they require, by the time the team running costs come out, PR and marketing for the sponsors, hospitality, shows etc there wont be much left. the team leases do work, i know its costly thats why Paul Bird isn't running Ducati's any more, we had looked at it for MTB but it a hard game to make money on, at lest DC can pass bikes down year by year, a mountain bike is finished after 1 or 2 seasons.

Be good to get some one from Ducati Corse to do a talk on how it all works, i'd be interested to know more, maybe tie it in with a video of how the factory works and someone answering questions on that?? wonder if there is enough interest to do that??

I'll see if I can ever make that happen, nice idea Mike.

I heard that Sete was something like Spains 5th richest geezer before he took up m/c racing. Anybody ken??

I'm pretty sure he's one of the Spanish Aristocracy, but don't quote me on that!

Anybody else got the facts?!?

He likes to compress other peoples chutney prior to its ejection?

Mind you, that bird of his looks like Pete Burns. Or is it Pete Burns???

No matter, if he wins a couple this year :hail:
