Eon's ride 5th April

Pete, not sure if I'll have the bike back for then (assessor's at DL tomorrow). Our favourite area all those roads though. If I'm back on Chris'll happily ride TEC so I don't slow others down (I'll be a lot slower and more cautious than anyone else). If the bike isn't back would we be welcome still on the GSA (I'll be pillion obviously) :) xx

Hi Pete

Should be up for this - well "part" of it !

Will give you a shout Sunday morning & aim to "Meet / wait" at the Sunn Inn...

Think Bronco will be out too..

Darren

cool with that, I'll text you as we leave Squires'. pick you up as we pass, then stop in Hawes for a natter and a brew.

Hi all would join you on this one, but taking the track bike down to West Sussex for the Portimao Park Algar track weekend.
Have a safe run.

Dunc:)

what time you planning on getting to Hawes Pete? I might make it out and could meet you there for a brew. be nice to get together and think about Eon.

Leaving Squires' at 1000, ETA Hawes 1130 if all goes well. Should beat the queues for lunch. Leaving Hawes probably about 1230/1300.

One year already - hard to believe.

Have a good ride guys and I'll raise a wee glass tonight for Eon.

well, i decided to join in this last night, but found out this AM the bike ran out of MoT some time ago :( Have a good, safe ride...

Well you didn't miss much, it was the usual three ring circus in terms of trying to organise folk.

Several swapped texts this morning as those who had been notified or who were/are forum members needed personal confirmation of start time, route layout or meet points.:confused::confused:

They still arrived late, still needed to fuel up, still didn't seem to have any idea of the layout of the country FFS!

Nine left Squires' in a decent well marshalled, steady away convoy (with no heroics), only six of us made it to the Sun Inn, at a very funereal pace befitting the occasion, as a direct result of riders not marking junctions or having any regard for others. Picked two more up at the Sun, having had to stop rather than just drive past, just a total waste of time TBH.

Then we got to Hawes having lost three again somewhere, everybody who made it there then decided that was enough and headed for home. I waited for the one lost soul to turn up for over an hour. Eventually we plodded up to Kirkby Stephen, down to Devil's, then home via the A65.

I was vastly underwhelmed by the response for the principal purpose of the ride too  - we had ONE rider, only one (two if you count me) who knew Eon. The rest were just my mates. Two just didn't show up, despite having said they would. Still at least a few got out last weekend.

What price a life eh? You'd get better thought of if you just lost a limb or something. I suppose it's a case of "out of sight, out of mind". Well that'll be me from now on. See ya. Maybe.

I tipped a bottle of peroni (or maybe 2 and a glass of white wine) to Eon tonight. If I was honest though, I tipped the first glass to Eon and the 2nd to my own absent friends, then I tipped the glass to all the people left who still put themselves forward to remembering such absent friends.
Can't recall specifically having met him (maybe on one occasion) but he's still there in the thoughts.
So with respect to having a ride out for a known friend who had passed on then I think you'll always be lucky to get people organised to make the moment or make time, but so long as at least one person remembers then there's hope that the memory will continue.

Wow, could tell you were pi$$ed off, but didn’t realise how much…
For what its worth I enjoyed the ride out and lunch at Hawes, I had commitments in the afternoon so couldn’t go on. But it was a nice morning ride, stopped for an icecream at Masham on the way back and home in time for what I needed to do.
Dont take it personally Pete, you organise some great runs, its inevitable that some of them wont work out...

I thought long and hard about replying to this, so hopefully I express what I think clearly and don't annoy anyone too much.

I met Eon once, thought he was a nice enough guy and was very upset by the bad news 12 months ago.

The thought of a rideout in memory was an appropriate gesture.

Pete, don't mistake people not attending as ambivalence to the memory of Eon. Everyone has their own way of paying respects.

All major accidents that result in severe injuries or fatalities shouldn't be taken lightly and in this community we know this better than anywhere else. All those involved, friends family or fellow riders are deeply effected.

Pete I hope you persevere with the Eon rideout and next year you feel more at ease with the result.

Sorry the run didn't go as you hoped but as was said earlier, if one person remembers then the memory lives on.

Every time I ride out I carry the memory of family and friends who have died on bikes.

As Bronce Jr said, you organise a lot of great runs and they can't always be perfect. Just try again next year. I think it's a good thing to do:)

I really wish I could have been there but it was impossible, I had to deliver my bike down to west sussex yesterday morning (for the Portimao trip) theres was no other day I could do it and hence no way I could make Eons ride.

It is a shame it was so badly attended as he was a popular bloke, anyone who attended his funeral will testify just how loved / respected he was by many friends as well as of course his family. Had been thinking about him this week...the date is easily remembered as it coincided with my much less serious accident (I found out about Eon on my return from hospital) Have already raised a glass to him and no doubt will do many more times. I recently found some routes he had sent me a few weeks before it happened and still regret rejecting a call he made to me a few days before he died, i was working day and night prepping my race bike and thought I would give him a call the following week...hindsights such a wonderful thing isnt it?

Has anyone been in touch with James recently?

Not sure if you mean us by the 'Two just didn't show up'. I'd asked if we'd be welcome on the GS as we weren't sure whether this would be a 'ducati only' kind of tribute ride. We didn't get a response. When only a couple of riders posted I assumed it was a ride for close friends of Eon's, we wouldn't have been intrusive by tagging along on the day.

Simply a misunderstanding Pete.

Fortunately it was a beautiful morning, the way you describe your group leaving Squires sounds as though it was, in fact, a fitting tribute to your friend.
