Seller's description

Really lovely bike. Regularly serviced and has quite a lot of service history/receipts. It is 22 years old so has a few marks but not many at all. The engine casings could do with a tidy up but that is me probably being picky. This is a bargain at this money. Message me if you are interested or for any questions. Thanks

Doesn't mention a valve service recently so probably needs one 👀
But does it? 2 mechanics I know both say as long as the valves are checked when first due they can be left alone later. One of these is a very well respected independent who also long ago advised me not to change belts every 2 years. This was way before the intervals were changed by Ducati to 5 years. He was right about the belts , was he also right about the valves?

Many say they rarely move - but they need checking: which is what I meant when I said a valve service. Many bikes of this age / mileage have never had them checked at all.

So would you agree check once and then not bother again?
No, and I would recommend checking belts at half term too as most failures are from incorrect / loose fitment or failing bearings.
My mate who is ex Ducati Tech and an Aprilia Specialist find loads of V4 Aprilia's with zero gaps that have never been checked - they then have to be done twice, once to make a gap and again to adjust it. He says it's almost as though dealers aren't checking them even if charging as it's a pain in the arse 👀

I remember on the Blackbird, there was a "check valves" service reccomendation at 24,000. A chap who's recognised as probably a guru on blackbirds said in all his time servicing blackbirds, none ever needed a valve service and even birds at 100,000 miles were still valve sweet.

Admittedly a ducati is not a blackbird and to be fair even honda no longer make bikes as well built as a blackbird anymore but servicing does seem to err on the side of profit for the bike company rather than match the bikes actual needs.

I get the belts checked at 2 years and so far none have needed changing and if I'm confident that the valves were checked on schedule I'm happy to ignore future scheduled checks as long as the bike is running well.
Sounds like Aprilia dealer servicing is not what it should be though.

There’s no harm in checking though. The actual check & measurement of the gaps isn’t what takes the time, it’s the changing of them if they are out of spec that’s fiddly and time consuming.

Because they’re non bike people. That said, I’ve always liked them. I love the classics, but I like quirky too.
Yea they seem to think think it's different and a little bit cool... The design only really being manufactured for three years probably tells the truth of its looks 👀
