Question regarding exhausts: is there a benefit to having a long pipe on the side (compression?) versus cut short at the bottom?

My guess is the exhaust helps make it go like billy o … I have a deep suspicion Ducati and akro have knowledge…. Yes it looks like unfinished plumbing but it will work.

Apparently its all about the diameter of the headers and ability to increase the velocity of exhaust gases. The pipe and mufflers are all about noise and heat management. So cut the pipe at the bottom, attach a slip on and lose 10 lbs in this case?
