Dropped the bike!

Well the worst happened this morning. I rode the bike into work and was following a couple of cars into the car park. While I was still banked over the first car stopped followed by the one behind. I braked to a stop but found the forks turned right against the lock stops and me unable to keep balance. I put my foot town but just couldn't hold it and the bike went down on the RH side. All 3 fairing panels on that side are scratched and the brake lever is broken off at the pivot so I can't even ride the bike home, where I have a spare lever.:mad::mad::mad:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

b0llocks, I'm really sorry to hear that! :(

bugger.. gutted for you mister, it's easily done when caught off balance. Hope you get it sorted quickly

Thats a drag Derek, but at least you weren't hurt.
Was that the front car park off the Perth Road?, it seems folk have always pulled into that entrance in front of the main doors then stopped to look for a space regardless of whats behind them.I remember many years back that same thing happened and the second car following in had to stop suddenly on the road and was hit by a van, the first car trundled away into the carpark oblivious to the consequences.
Seems like nothings changed then:(

Sorry to hear this Derek :(

As has been said before, metal and plastics easily repaired and as long as you're not injured then that's the main thing.

Hope the bike can make a full and speedy recovery though

Oh dear. Not a good start to the day. At least you weren't injured, though these things are a pain in other ways ?. Hope you get it it all working again soon.

Thanks for your comiserations guys.
Since the bike is unrideable without the front brake I was trying to figure out how to get it home. My wife is working until 6 and cant get a spare lever to me. I finish at 4.30 but would have to leave the bike, get a bus home and then get my wife to bring me back in the evening with a spare lever.
Then a guy I work with asked "have got AA cover or something to get you home". Now I have breakdown cover with NCI so I phoned them up. Their reply was 'Sorry sir, accidents are not covered, we can't help you".
Bloody hell! So if you drop your bike and damage a brake lever or anything else that renders unrideable they will leave you stranded
I am not a happy bunny.

Anyway, I got a fix that will get me home sorted out. I had a look around our workshop and found a few lengths of 6mm thick x 1" wide aluminium strip. I cut a 12" length, folded it in 2 with each half on either side of the remaining stub of the brake lever then drilled 3 holes right through the lot and bolted it on with M4 screws. It looks ugly as hell but it will get me home.

And Dave, yes it was the Perth Rd car park. The car at the front stopped to let somebody off, despite the fact that there was following traffic. Bollocks!!

main thing is you're not hurt Derek and who cares what it looks like - it will get you home:)

Derek,
Sorry to hear about your off. Regarding the above I've mentioned previously when Hamish came off after the Hizzy run. He phoned the AA and informed him it was an accident. Their reply " your not covered for accident recovery but we offer a return to home service at £100/10mile" at which point he went rather pale! We were 50miles from home. I think the same applies if you brake your key in the ignition - it's self inflicted and isn't covered - I know this is the case with the RAC.

Geoff

sorry to hear that derek, at least your ok m8 !

thanks for the heads up tho, in future ill just say im broken down, which is technically correct :/

Sorry to hear about that Derek.........easy done......have the T-shirt also....Bike will repair that's the main thing......have spare levers if needed...

Mark...

If you're still under warranty then AA (sorry, DucatiAssist - or is it the insurance?) will recover to home or garage after an accident.
Recovered me home after accident about half mile from home and charged it to the plonkers insurers.

Sorry to hear that Derek but as others have said you are ok.
perhaps you should have told breakdown it just fell off!;)
Did almost identical thing with a Pan European and despite having a foot down I couldn't hold the weight. They have protectors on the fairing as standard as it is a common complaint with them. No damage in that case.

Here are a couple of pictures of the resultant damage. As you can see the damage has managed to spread it self over all three panels. I could probably repair the top and bottom panels myself but the centre section definitely needs professional attention. :(

...and this is my lashed up up get me home lever - even Scotty would be hard pushed to do a better bodge than this ;)

bummer - that looks worse than I anticipated it :(

anyway a wee touch of black paint (or nailpolish if you have any:confused: ) on the "lever" and you'll never notice the difference;)

Sorry to hear about your "spill". At least your ok. Similar thing happened at my neighbours work and the guy broke his leg!

Yes thanks, I've known this happen to other people. I was very aware that it was going to be the bike or me so I just had to let it go.

Bummer Derek, shows it can happen to the most experienced of us.

There's an ST4s abs being broken on Ebay at the moment if anything specific needs replacing (grey bodywork unfortunately).

Thanks for the tip Iain. I haven't fully inspected the damage yet but it looks like a bit of paint is all that's required. I've already bought a replacement adjustable lever off ebay.

What a bummer Derek and especially when it's not your fault. Felt the same as you when i had to drop the 900. At least yur engineerin skills came to the front and you'll get home ok and in one piece

Sorry to hear about your mishap but so glad you're okay.:D

Very impressed with your repair, it could catch on as the latest 'must have' accessory.:D ;) :D

Sorry to hear about this Derek, glad your ok. Similar thing happened to me but when I had a Z650 and I managed to ride it to Bradford Kawasaki (using the back brake and riding slowly) but they didn't have one in stock:eek: I persuaded them to sell me one off a bike in the showroom. Clutch cable went one winter when it was snowing hard, I was in Baildon and rode it back to Harrogate...very slowly and carefully:eek:

If it had come to it I might have ridden it home but you know how ineffective Ducati back brakes are
I've ridden with out a clutch plenty of times, that's not too hard. I've twice managed to ride home with a broken throttle cable.

Doh, it hurts so much more when its a pristine bike,
least you didn't throw yourself underneath it to save it (doesn't really work anyway)

I dare you to take that lever to you next MOT see what they say :D

I would have ridden home without, engine breaking and a bit more of a sedate ride , its surprising now little you actually need to use the brake's

I find it a bit more unsettling when you manage to snap both brake levers though
