When a WWII Aircraft Engine Became a Motorcycle
What happens when a piece of WWII aviation history is cut down and transformed into a motorcycle engine The answer is the extraordinary Merlin V-Twin 5000cc, a radically engineered custom motorcycle built by Australian mechanic Lucky Keizer.
The heart of this machine reportedly uses two original cylinders taken from a Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 aircraft engine, the legendary powerplant associated with aircraft such as the P-51 Mustang and Supermarine Spitfire. Reconfigured into a V-twin arrangement, the enormous engine is reported at around 5,000cc, although some earlier references have listed the capacity closer to 4,500cc. Rather than simply preserving an aircraft engine as a display piece, Keizer adapted its components into a completely different mechanical application—a motorcycle.
The engineering does not stop with the massive engine. The Merlin V-Twin features a prominent open belt-drive system on the side, giving the motorcycle an unmistakably industrial appearance. Its starting system is also unusual, reportedly using a starter motor sourced from a Douglas DC-3 aircraft. Keizer designed and assembled the motorcycle by hand at his workshop in the Dubbo region of New South Wales, Australia, making the project as much a display of fabrication and mechanical ingenuity as it is a motorcycle.
The obvious drawback is equally clear an engine of this size and heritage presents enormous challenges in weight, packaging, heat management, drivetrain demands, and practical usability compared with a conventional motorcycle engine. It is far removed from an everyday road bike and is better understood as an ambitious mechanical creation built around the challenge of making an extraordinary concept work.
