Clunking (forks?) front

While messing about in my garage,(fitting seats, wondering how much a new rear tyre will set me back etc) I noticed a clunking noise when pushing down on my fork-obviously with the brake held on,I know its not meant to do that and will take a trip to Glasgow quite soon(order me a new rear Diablo Harry as this ones gubbed!).
In the meantime I've looked for the obvious,no leaky seals, front wheel doesn't seem to move seperate from forks etc, so what else might it be?
Cant feel any play on the headbearings and can only hear it when the forks are compressed,as if somethings loose, and clunks against something else,it cant be the extent of fork travel surely?, being only pushed down by hand like this....they are soft, mind.

movement in the floating discs (if you have them) , pads in the calipers???

I had that clunking fork thing on my 750ie. It disappeared when I exchanged my wafer-thin front brake pads with some brand new ones.

i would go with movement of the floating discs, as my old 600 was really bad for that, took me a few weeks to work it out

No marks on the forks? How far's the travel, could be bottomin oot if the fork oils not been changed for a while.

Its only a year old with 4000 miles on it,still under warranty.
I'll get the fine chaps at DGlasgow to check it for me when I'm next up.
Current favourite theory seems to be a brake related noise then.

I would agree with the brake theory! They do make some strange noises!
I did wonder for a while myself when I had strange noises coming from mine, before I realised!

I had a similar issue Dave so I checked it out by doing this - stick the forks up on a paddock stand, give the wheel a spin both backward and forward - if the 'clunk' is still there then its you discs/pads (mines did this) - if not then its probably your yoke bearing or forks.

It would surprise me if it were the forks bottoming out while at a standstill. If that is the case then the springs are F*cked!!!!
Brembo put little retainers (spring clips) on the calipers to stop the pads clattering around while not being applied. I don't use them so have lots of clatting! But unless you have full floaters fitted your discs will have spring washers on the bobbins stopping them clattering. Check out whether your calipers are fitted with these spring clips.

I'm voting for the pads moving in the calipers.
My m620 does it, so does the 996.

A mate had a similar clunk too... turned out in that case there was too much slack between the rotor and carrier - new disc and job's a goodun.
