I had the pleasure of residing in Shetland between 1990 and 1996 when there was a solitary experimental wind turbine on the mainland. During my time there I could count on one hand the number of times I saw it operational (I passed it twice a day 5 days a week). It was reported by a reliable source that it couldn't handle the wind gusts and munched gearboxes - they must have learned an awful lot from that experiment
