Battery Disposal

Am I right in thinking there is a proper procedure for vehicle battery disposal? i.e. not slinging it in the wheely bin / over the fence or from a moving car? Do local tips take them?

Some petrol stations and garages take them too (Morrisons around our way have collection bins for them).
