ok, so it's not Italian, but I have the chance to acquire 99% of a boxed 1958 Norton Dominator

I know there is lots of info out there on these bikes, but in terms of restoration would a fairly novice mechanic be able to handle this?

I would go for it, there are loads of companys still doing spares for these, websites and forums for help if Derek can't help you! In my teens my mate had a 66 which he pulled apart and rebuilt as we all had jap bikes and he was on this old british bike he naturally got the nickname...Ogri! It might catch on!

lily id go for it, mechanicaly speaking these bikes are fairly simple so rebuilding it should be within your abilities no probs. like steve says there are a lot of remanufactured parts avaliable nowadays, and with modern gaskets and that it is possible to stop them leaking. you should be able to make your money back on it even if you just sit on it and dont do anything to it.

warning; you may find yourself trawlling round autojumbles,wearing big bobbly jumpers, drinking beer with hedgehogs in it and smoking a pipe.the risks of classic bike ownership:D :D

If you get stuck there'll be load of bods who can help - and Classic Bike mag' will be full of contacts.

Better still, find an old Ducati 450 SCR and do that ;)
 
A nice bike Lily and as allready said , plenty of bits kicking about for them .

If you need any machining or fabricating doing during the rebuild give me a shout as I,m a jobbing machinist by trade and have the keys for work ;) Our biggest lathe has a 54 inch chuck so no problem skimming the brake drums :D
 
it's not i am looking for one, it's in the family already lurking at the back of parents garage looking lonely so I was contemplating a rescue mission.

Sounds feasible, just need to work out if we have space...

just been informed that we do not have space and he is not interested, so guess it will continue to live in a box for now :(

sad thing is if parents had more space dad would do it. I grew up living in the kitchen most of the time as there was always some project bike being built in the front room. Evenings were spent round an old tin bath full of parafin/gunk cleaning up bits of engine :D

it's no wonder I am weird :thumbs:

just clear his office out Claire, its about the right size, dry, warm perfect for bike rebuilding :D or stick it in my garage the Laverda isn't taking up much room now, its down to bare frame ready to go to powder coating

yeah but I like having Linzi as a freind and I am not certain I would be too popular with her if I turned up with ANOTHER bike :D

Ah, she'd just kick me out there with them all :D pity we gave the sofa away I quite liked living out there :D
