I'm about to take the plunge and get my first Duc, but the question is what are the relevant pro's and con's of the the 916 and 996 and what should i be looking for when i buy?
Any help appreciated!

Plenty of information out there regarding what to look for, main things are service history, belts etc.

The only major difference between the two will be capacity but this depends on model, the original '99 996 was pretty much the same as a 916, but there are various models across both ranges so you need to decide which you are looking at, most will have been modified by now I'm sure, termi's, shoch, carbon, bling etc anyway.

I've ridden both and owned a 996 and didn't think there was that much between them.

916 and 996 were almost the same bike, 996 has 2 injectors per cylinder vs 1 for 916.

2000+ 996 perhaps bigger difference with nitride coated forks and standRD Marchesini 5 spoke wheels.

Gut says the big "916" original logo everytime!

Well, interestingly, if you google Ducati Buying Advise, DuN, Ducatisti and Ducati.MS all come up in the results. Personally I would favour the opinions of like minded Ducati owners, people who own or owned the bikes in question rather than sifting thru wikipedia and magazine articles or youtube clips and ebay adverts. I could be wrong but i thought that was one of the aims of these forums, to help like minded people?

Between a 916 and a 996 I'd always go for a late 996. (always admired the 2000 spec 996 sps as the last of the line)

It depends so much on what you want from the bike.

Occasional high day outings of a bike that you won't rack up big miles on I'd go 916. If you aren't too concerned about racking some miles up, get a late model bike, then its 996.

I'd see an original 916 as something that is getting a bit precious now.

A 916 is likely to be a good bit older that a 996 so some model specific parts might be a bit more difficult to get hold of.

A late 996 should come with post TPG quality and reliability (rockers apart).

A bike for hooning about on or treating with a bit more care??

I owned a '99 996 bip for about four years and 14k miles. Pretty reliable and trouble free at home, abroad, on track and on the road. I bought it brand new just before the nitrided fork, 5 spoke wheel 996 model came out and was hacked off when the upgraded bike came out but hey ho.

Ducati's aren't usually bought with the head they are bought with the heart.

There are a good few 916 & 996 in various model years and specs about, have a browse on autotrader.

Your budget for buying might dictate what you end up with.

Blimey..........just had a look about for 916 and 996 for sale, there is a lot less choice now than last summer. Maybe it's just the time of year of people are hanging on to these bikes now.:dunno:

Thanks

Thats what I'm after, I can get all the facts and figures from web sites but people that have owned them and know what to look for when buying second hand (pre-loved?) and how to spot a dog from a peach when viewing is what I'm after!
Cheers all

:)Condition and service history !

Buy the best you can afford. Probably best to go for the most standard and untampered with you can get.

There is lots of very useful stuff in the Tech Library including an article titled "Buying a used superbike".

Ingest with several bottles of Rioja otherwise the potential problems will put you off. I used it when looking to help keep my feet on the ground; bought well and then wrote 916 off. Doh!

Almost there

Its almost there!
Not counting any chickens or stuff but suffice to say I'm like a 5 year old on Christmas Eve
All revealed tomorrow
Exciting waiting for your first Duc to arrive isnt it?
:D:D

So.....916 or 996...?

(remember, you started it..)

Keep us posted.

PS I agree..this should be the place for opinions & impressions, not generic
guff factoid links. Otherwise, wot's the point.
(P'd me off - Ducatisti far more helpful, I thought, & took my pint home)
But now I have one in the shed, all is forgiven.

Its a 2002 996 Bip, 7.5k miles, FSH, Standard, the one with the Ohlins rear shock and nitrided front forks & Marchesini 5 spokes so Don is a happy lad at last
