749 Musings....

Evening all.

Just pondering a change of bike and wondering how cramped a 749 would be. I've tried a Daytona and didn't find it too comfy and also wasn't overly keen on the leg position on an SV. It felt like the pegs were too far forward and too high for my liking.

Quite fancy a sports bike now, after spending the last couple of days switching between the SV and a Street Triple... but not one that means my moobs will meet my knee caps when I'm tucked in if that makes sense??

I'm about 5.11ish on a good day I think.

Currently got a Street Triple which is fantastic... but just can't stop drooling over the 749s, 999s etc. every time I see them all at the Welly on a Sunday.

Another consideration.... is a 749 a bad idea for someone with under 5k miles experience too I wonder... ?!?! hmmm....

Cheers!

Dave.

Done a few 800 - 1k+ weekends and find it fine, no comfort issues at all. I'm only 5'9 tho. A lot more comfy than my 996 which gave me sore wrists and neck at 300 mile region. The seat on the 749 is surprisingly comfy over long rides. Tall screen makes for more comfort on long rides but I prefer the look of the standrd screen and put up with the buffeting, which ain't excessive for me :)

And no I dont think a 749 would be a bad choice, just be careful with it

Had a 749 and loved it. My first Ducati. I'm also 5'11" and had no problem. Came from a Bandit so took a bit of getting used to. I had also done less than 3000 miles when i got her, but no problems with it. Even did a couple of track days. Go on, you know you want too.:D:D:D

Hmmm.. I might need to get a test ride organised then and see if it works for me. Anyone fancy a swap for a STriple for a weekend then?? :lol2:

There's a couple in the classifieds just now that look perfect.... shouldn't have looked!! Going to be a bit upset if I can't get comfy on one now....

Decisions decisions....

Cheers,

Dave.

DDtB, I have a 749 Bip which I bought a year and 4000 miles, after returning to bikes after 30 years. I found it just brilliant, and much easier to ride than the Monster I had before it (:dunno:). It's a bike with lots of depth of character that handles goes and stops just the way I ask it to. A real riders bike and a keeper. Doesn't seem any smaller to me than my F4 to ride, but then I'm only 5'7" .
Thing I'd be concerned with is how you'd enjoy a v twin after a triple. Think you might find a big difference in how the 'grin factor' is delivered, although this might be part of what you're looking for?

I'm 6 2" I think they are roomy - and comfortable,.. 749/999 looks small but if I can fit on it anyone can.

Go treat yourself m8.

hmmmm......I think test riding a 749 is a bad idea, just make sure the mileage is correct, it's had a service and the belts changed and its running well, tidy and been looked after.

When you start it it sounds like a load of spanners in a tumble drier, they all should sound like that (and it quietens down when you pull the clutch in)
It will take a while to get used to it if you have not ridden many bikes. It will be harder to ride than the Trumpet and you might feel put off by it. Remember it has been designed as a race bike and softened for the road.
It will feel different to start with and it will really benefit from having the suspension set up for your weight. It does have adjustable foot pegs and seat to make the riding position suit your height.
You have to decide that you really want a 749 and then search out the best you can afford and just buy it.
My first Ducati was a 900ss and I went and looked at it, checked it over, paid the money and he asked me if I wanted to test ride it.
I said how about I ride it home and if I didn't like it I would bring it back, he said that it was fine with him.
I did of course not return with it, the more I rode it the more I loved it.
I had made up my mind that was the Ducati for me until I could afford to buy and insure a 748 which was the Ducati I had always promised myself ever since I first saw the 916

Cheers folks.

The urge isn't going away!

I know the sound of the 999 when it starts up and at idle... when it basically sounds fecked... so I won't be put off if the 749 sounds similar!

Do all the 749s come with adjustable pegs and seat then?

I'm fully expecting to be the slowest 749 rider out there... I've only got a year's experience on the STriple and I'm nowhere near close to its limits, but I'm enjoying the learning curve!

A wee pic from a happy day I spent watching a friend on his 999 whilst getting some handy tips from him too which helped improve my riding massively!!

749's with termis seem to sound better than 999's, to me at least

No, bips and darks don't, Ive put adjustable rearset on mine for better grip and can better adjust foot to lever positioning

you will be able to do 70mph at the same speed as everyone else, it is a great bike to get to grips with.

749 choosing

Hi there,

good thinking going for a 749 but no hurry ! Have you only had the Triumph for a year ?

I like the 750 Ducati engine better for my road riding and overall get more satisfaction than when i had 1000 Dukes.
It's a better balanced engine than the bigger ones but of course doesn't have the top end grunt.
Horses for courses and all that. I am approx 5' 10' and a half ! and find riding position ok for shorter rides but obviously not so comfy as an upright position with lower pegs. I fitted a 'Zero gravity' screen and Heli Bars which make a bit of a difference.
I love the bike, bought it new 3 yrs ago and was one of last of the models.

hmmmm......I think test riding a 749 is a bad idea

tbh... I'm not having any luck finding one to test ride at all just now ....

bang goes my perfect plan of turning up at DG on Saturday and just swapping the STriple for the perfect 749 (which obviously I could ride like a god and which had coincidentally been traded in that morning 5 mins before I walked in... ):hissy:

:lol2:

Plenty time to find one, cheap as chips and good value for money.

There was 1 getting sold on here with everything you need but alas was in track mode. He didnt want much for it either.

I know I know.. patience is a virtue... and there's no mad rush given that I have got a great bike just now.

I'll probably finally get to ride one and then find it's not for me ....or something stupid like that. I just want to find out sooner rather than later ;)

Cheers,

Dave.

If anyone fancies letting me at least have a seat on one to try it for size.... I have plenty beer tokens here!!!

Well I'll be in Edinburgh on Saturday morning armed with Beer & Wine tokens if anyone in Auld Reekie wants to let me pop round to ask them 10000s of questions about 749s and maybe sit on one too!! ;)

:lol2:

Well I got a seat on a 999 today and was very very tempted.... but thankfully someone else bought it whilst I was dithering at the dealers!!

It was a bit over budget and on reflection... I think I'm better off with both kidneys!

Anyway... even though I didn't get to ride it, it did feel like a good fit.... much comfier than the Daytona anyway.

So now just trying to find the perfect 749, which will hopefully be inline with my budget!! 2003/04.. or 05 spec onwards... hmmmm :dunno:

Cheers!

Dave.

What i think you should do, is buy a 749 track bike.

Oh, i just happen to have a 749s trackbike coming up for sale. :lol2:

Well that's the STriple provisionally sold then... gonna miss it.

Hope this Ducati thing is all it's cracked up to be!!!

Seems that what I should be looking for is a red 749 with Termis ... nothing else matters as much as red and termis apparently... :lol2:

Let the hunt begin. Nice try Coddy btw .. ;):lol2:

(Mike, I'll drop you a PM with my contact details if you want to have a chat offline)

Cheers!

Dave.
